Man who nearly killed physical media returns with $60,000 vinyl turntable

Katy_B

Undiscerning would-be audiophile

Many years ago, with my first couple of months wages in the bank, I went to see Thomas Heinitz in Moscow Road, Bayswater, then the top audio equipment shop in London. I wanted a tyrntable and was determined to spend as much as I could. Mt Heinitz sat me down in front of the six foot tall electrostatic speakers in the shop and set up behind me a couple of turntables with the records synced. 'I will switch from one to the other and you must tell me if you can hear any difference,' he said. I listened and after a long few minutes decided that I couldn't hear any difference between the two. 'Now turn round.' There was a Sondek LP12 and next to it a )realitively) cheapo turntable. The interesting thing was that he had put a box of matches under the felt on the platter of the cheap one and that set the record at a very odd angle, with the tone arm riding along like a small boat in a heavy sea. He advised me to buy the cheap one. (That shows how long ago it was.)

Arse end of Victoria

I once tried the new Shake Shack in the next door building. Felt queasy all afternoon from the shockingly high level of heart-stopping fats in the burger and the shake.

I think of Victoria street as a little bit of 60s Birmingham dropped into London. Beards or no, at least the food is better in Shoreditch. Mien Tay - Yum!

Honey, I shrunk the battery: Something's gotta give as iPhone 12's logic board swells to accommodate 5G chippery

Katy_B

5G battery life anguish

Personally I don't worry about 5G draining my new iPhone 12 Pro. I'm on O2 and there's sod all 5G around to worry about.

Bill Gates debunks 'coronavirus vaccine is my 5G mind control microchip implant' conspiracy theory

Katy_B

Take home point

Obviously the interweb thingy is behind all of this. It lets any twat advertise his stupidity to the entire world.

The answer, of course, is to ban the internet.

I can 'proceed without you', judge tells Julian Assange after courtroom outburst

Re: Blackmailed

I'm sorry but you have misunderstood the point of the UK-US extradition treaty. Whatever the wording is, it never, in fact, applies to American citizens.

It's a bit like the war crimes investigations into American soldiers in Afghanistan. You don't try to charge US soldiers with war crimes and if you even think of it the USA will put personal sanctions on any judge at the Hague who tries.

Three middle-aged Dutch hackers slipped into Donald Trump's Twitter account days before 2016 US election

Katy_B

Re: If you check on https://crackstation.net/ (as I just did, as I was curious)

Oh yes he did. I'm guessing he's updated it now though. Maybe try 'Ivankashot'?

Katy_B

Fake news

Listen, Trump is a stable genius who doesn't need advice from a bunch of computer nerds. Let him be with his passwords.

And if a bunch of computer nerds hack his twitter again could they please make sure to put in his thoughts on 'losers' who get killed fighting wars.

Please??

Chinese ambassador to UK threatens to withdraw Huawei, £3bn investment if comms giant banned from building 5G

Well, duh!

Nothing much to add to that. I think the old Chinese proverb says 'If you kick me up the arse I won't be your best friend'.

Congratulations Peebles. Felicitations Queenzieburn. Openreach is bringing you FTTP (yes, they're real places)

Katy_B

yipee

I live and work in the W1 postcode in London. Yup, London's properous business heart, with its Mayfair hedge funds and all that. Pretty much the 'first third' by anyone's measure. In fact, I live next door but one to our telephone exchange, so close it explains why I can get a staggering 12Mbps download speeds. Prospects for BT fibre in ANY form? Zero. Sure, I can get my own leased line for £400 a month but that's a tad expensive.

Actually, I moved on from a G4 service from Relish (70Mbps) to the Hyperoptic FTTP that the building management sensibly allowed them to install (247 Mbps for £20 a month). but BT/Openreach - WTF??

Re: such priorities

As the saying goes: "if 'pro' is the opposite of 'con', then what's the opposite of 'progress'?"

Republicaness.

Katy_B

If it ever comes to pass I think it won't be long before some helpful soul publishes Senators Graham and Connor's browsing history.

Re: What about foreign entities?

Really, Mts. Merkel? Then we will be taking our troops back home tomorrow.

Katy_B

Re: Extraditable?

They don't have to send Marines. Just stop supplying us with Trident missiles and refuse to sell us aeroplanes to put on our aircraft carriers. Mr. Johnson and his top team of ar*e lickers wouldn't like that.

Katy_B

Re: "A trio of Republican senators"

I'm going to nick that and claim it as my own!

Katy_B

Re: stupidity out of ignorance or avarice

You are unfamiliar with the seven deadly sins then? (At least, that is, in a literary way.)

Katy_B

A fitting name

I think the name should be shortened to Lawful Access to Data Act, then we could acronymize it to LADA. Much more appropriate.

Former UK Labour deputy leader wants to know how the NHS's contact-tracing app will ensure user privacy

Katy_B

And why has it cost £11,000,000?

Nice pay for a week, let alone 24 hours.

Immunity passports! Get your immunity passports here!

Immunity passport guv? It's just £50 cash and I'll see you right ;-)

Katy_B

Re: how the NHS's contact-tracing app will ensure user privacy

Failing Grayling to guard your privacy! Hooray!

Contact-tracer spoofing is already happening – and it's dangerously simple to do

Katy_B

We haven't seen the media and other public figures mobilising in concerted effort like this against any of the people that actually did break the guidelines and the law, so why this one man?

That is because the two most prominent breakers who were found out IMMEDIATELY RESIGNED.

Katy_B

sms spoofing service

I'm a complete technical bozo (definitely NOT to be confused with Bojo) but I just searched for sms spoofing and came across three websites that offer to send spoofed texts on your behalf. Clearly not something that only a hacking genius can do.

Just before trump reintroduces a nuclear arms race to impress his voters.

Made-up murder claims, threats to kill Twitter, rants about NSA spying – anything but mention 100,000 US virus deaths, right, Mr President?

If you are in London just walk into St Thomases. They're good and it's free and they are open right now.

Poor Americans

Thank god our political masters in the UK are such decent, honest, straight chaps who think only of the populace's good.

(But they are learning from Trump.)

Imagine if Facebook could read your mind: Er, I have some bad news for you...

Re: Gyms

I learned Fortran at Uni - I'd def have a heart attack if I went to a gym. Not to mention the sneary looks from young people.

Either my name, my password or my soul is invalid – but which?

Katy_B

I've noticed that many government sites which deal with things like your tax and NI record, and also most banks, will not accept special characters in passwords. Some don't even call for a capital letter as long as you have a numeral in there.

It may be just me but I would have thought that banks and the government might think safer passwords were a good idea?

No, no!

BT will HATE us for this one weird 5G trick

Oooooh!

"lets me substitute muscles for my Oyster."

Ooooh! Is there any way we can get together to discuss this further, preferably immediately!

Katy_B

WTF?

"Think of it as the difference between throwing a rock and a similar weight of gravel into a pond."

This is drivel.

I spent a large portion of my lunch hour throwing both rocks AND handfuls of gravel into the round pond in Kensington Gardens until a police patrol car hove into sight at which point I decided to be a) discreet and b) save our brave boys in blue considerable paperwork and legged it.

At no point could I discern any difference in distance of throw or size of ripples at the pond's edge between rocks and gravel.

I have a feeling that goes for 5G as well.

Post-pub nosh neckfiller: Tortilla de patatas

Katy_B

NO NO NO COÑO!

You cannot cook the onions with the spuds! They each take a different time to cook. Manuela, who took me in hand in the kitchen and taught me much about Andalucian passion when I was younger, always insisted that each was cooked until just so SEPARATELY. Also, the eggs should be still moist inside too.

The rest is OK and this is the best tortilla by a mile - none of that poncy bell pepper rubbish for me.
