Re: Is it malware, or crapware

You've just described Windows 10! =-D

It doesn't take THAT much tech savvy to do a right click on the inserted SD card, click Properties, then click the ReadyBoost tab. You can either let it take the whole card for use as a swap file, designate a specific amount of space to dedicate for the purpose, or forget it & click cancel. As long as the card is in the slot then the device will run a little (and I do mean *LITTLE*) bit snappier, but you're correct that it won't let you use it for specific Window file storeage. If you designate half the card to ReadyBoost & leave the other half as user accessible then you can use that other space for files, but it's far easier to just let the machine use the whole card for the task.
My son's maternal grandmother bought him an el cheapo tablet for his birthday one year & it had SFA for storeage/RAM. I slapped in a 64Gb card, told him never to remove it, & set it to use half for installed files & half for ReadyBoost. It made it run fast enough so that he could play turn based games like Oregon Trail without too much complaint, but any "real time" games lagged so bad he didn't even bother to LOAD them in the first place. ("Am I supposed to watch the intro screen being redrawn Dad? This thing SUCKS!")
You *can* improve such a low cost, low spec device by cramming in a max capacity card into the slot (the highest capacity the machine will read), then dedicating at least half of it to be ReadyBoost. It won't speed it up enough to make you happy to have bought the thing in the first place, but it *might* stop you from INTENTIONALLY throwing it under the buss & cackling gleefully at it's demise. =-J
Ok, I hear what you're saying (well, what my reader is saying) but it still doesn't make sense. I've had JS turned off for aeons & not had this problem, so why it suddenly starts now is a mystery.
The numbers are links, I can click on the number to Up/Down vote, but there's nothing prior to either number to indicate that they ARE for Up & Down voting. No button, no text, no AltText, nada. Jaws19 can't seem to find anything there to read at all, even when forced to do a manual OCR of the screen & read things even the normal OCR doesn't identify. *Shrugs & sighs*
I'll try fiddling with the settings in Jaws to try & get it to find the buttons, but that still leaves the bit about being kicked back to the top of the page.
Thanks for the help. Go enjoy a pint on me, just as long as you sober up in time to give it another look come Monday morning. =-)
There used to be buttons to Up/Down vote a comment. They no longer get read by my screen reader. I thought the reader was glitching but a forced OCR of the screen reveals there are no such buttons to be read. This wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that just clicking the numbers to vote spits me back to the top of the page & loses my place in the comments thread. I have to copy the last line of the post I'm about to vote on, vote, then tell my machine to Control+Find the copied text to get back to where I had been. I haven't changed my browsers settings, my readers settings are the same, yet now the site makes me jump through hoops just to vote. Am I missing something? Is there a box I need to tick in my site settings, or some other form of Voodoo chicken sacrafice I'm supposed to do to make it work?
Thanks!
Thank you for the clarification. For some reason I equated "documentation" as "public documentation" & that threw me. If it wasn't for public use then that makes the picture focus in my mind.
Enjoy a pint in gratitude, pass the popcorn, & let's ogle the wait staff to imagine their various API's. =-)p
An API is created by the maker so that 3rd parties can interface with the device or software in such a way as to enable functionality that wasn't envisioned by said maker. Is it not a documented list of "If you do $This then $That happens" commands, "If you send #N volts to $This pin then $ThisAction happens in $ThisOther location", or "Use $This set of pins to enable our device to talk to yours" style bits such that the 3rd parties can make other devices/write other code specificly to interface with the makers stuff?
If that is the case then how can they claim it was an undocumented API? If it was an API then it had to have been written by the makers of the device/software, thus known, & a selling feature rather than a bug to be taken out later with a chainsaw & extreme prejudice?
If the devices were sold with that API as a selling point then the removeal of it would be bait & switch would it not?
*Shrugs in confusion*
I guess I'm just glad I'm a curmudgeonly old fart that still has to do stuff the archaic way- manually. Research something on the internet? Fire up my desktop 'cuz I ain't got no AlexaCortanaSiriSmartPhonedoohickey to do it for me. Want to make a phone call? Gotta open my flip phone & punch the physical keys 'cuz I ain't got no touchyfeely screenything. Want to go somewhere? Gotta steal a car 'cuz I ain't got no Uberlyftcar2gohailarideinstataxi crap.
*Shakes a palsied fist*
Danged whippersnappers anyer newfangled smartypants phones.
Get offn my laaaaawwwwwn!
*Cough*
I'll be going now, it's time for my happy pills... =-)p
I'm not sure why folks have so much trouble with their mice.
Mine gets food, water, fresh bedding, a squeaky toy, & plenty of HabiTrail tubes to play in & has lasted me many years of delighted, loyal service. It gets a little nervous when the cat jumps in my lap, but kitty knows the mouse is not for eating & to keep her claws off his balls.
=-)p
Fuck that. Strap his ass into a chair ala Clockwork Orange & force that bastard to watch it on endless rerun until his brain (if it exists) oozes out his ears. By the time he's released after serving his sentance you want him so frightened of anything with horns that he can't go home again until/unless they strip the place of trophy heads first. Sing the theme song in earshot & he runs screaming from the place. And that should go for the whole lot o' 'em. Taking their licenses away won't do a damn thing, but forcing them to watch Bambi for 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a full year JUST might pound the lesson home.
Guns aren't the problem, assholes that don't give a fuck about the law is the problem. You don't punish the tool if someone uses it to do bad things, you punish the person for doing bad things. The tool is innocent, it's the person that needs to be slapped upside the head.
See all those icons on the current ribbon? They'll remove them all & then charge you to put them back. Per icon. Per function. Per use.
"Want to save that document? We'll enable that icon for only $1 per use. Make payments via the link below..."
We hope I'm being sarcastic but secretly fear that MS will be doing exactly this sort of shit. =-|
At Sandtitz, re: MS FUD.
If it's FUD then it was FUD included in the official Win10 Privacy Policy. 2016.06.17, Taken from:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-privacy-statement
MS described every bit of data they claimed as telemetry, including but not limited to all the various types of data I described in my previous post. I'm not sure if they've backed off on the level of data hoovering they do, but as of the time of that version of the policy it would be FUD from the horses own lawyers & thus legally binding FUD.
Go read the policy. I did & it's quite chilling in a 1984 didn't go far enough kind of way.
MS: the company that hoovers up your every keystroke, file accessed, archived file stored on any connected (local/cloud/network) drive, how often you run every program, how many times you run them, every website you browse (and can MITM intercept everything you do via that supposedly secure VPN), all under the guise of "telemetry to improve customer experiences" whether you want them to or not, *can not* turn such telemetry off without knowing enough Admin skills to navigate your way through laborynthian Control Panel/Settings menus, and *ONLY* if you are lucky enough to have an Educational or Enterprise edition of the OS (because Home users can't & Pro users get their copies turned into Home versions via forced updates)...
MS can't be trusted as far as you could tie an anvil to their face via their tongue & drop them into the Marianas Trench from orbit.
FB is bad, there's no doubt of that, but you don't have to use it if you don't want to & can block them if you want; try doing that to the Windows machine you may have no choice but to use because you're not Tech Savvy enough to be able to give it an OS that *doesn't* treat you like shit.
I remember them fondly as sources of eternal frustration as I couldn't play worth shit & got my ass handed to me every single time. From folks shoving me off rooftops, driving over me with tanks, shooting me repeatedly as I stepped out of the respawn points & returned from "ghost mode", asking me to disarm a landmine that they had boobytrapped with a second landmine such that I would get turned into chunky salsa in a shower of my own internal organs... And those were the folks trying to teach me how to play! The actual opponents weren't nearly that kind. *Happy sigh*
I'd play them now for the fond (sado masochistic) memories of JUST how badly I could play, I'd probably suck LESS now that I'm totally blind & would simply stand still, spin in circles, & fire until the ammo runs out.
"LOOK OUT! The blind guy's got a spoon! Run away! RUN AWAY!"
*Dies in happy laughter*
(Reading haltingly from a Hungarian guidebook in excrutiatingly bad Hungarian) I would like to have sex with your sister. RumpyRumpy SpankySpanky.
(Looking up from the guidebook & in English) I would like to speak to the American Consulate, Please.
(Snaps the guide closed to reveal the HHGTTG Blob on the cover with the legend "PANIC!" in Hungarian.)
The article said the DNS was redirected to a CloudFlare account. To whom does that CF account belong? That's one Accessory you now have, so grab them & shake the next link in the chain out of them. Keep shaking until all the links are on the table & you can prosecute the entire lot of them.
I'm unfortunately on the wrong side of the Pond & thus forever doomed to the shite American's call "bacon". Paper thin strips of 90%+ fat/10%- meat-like-substance, injected with water, chemicles, & other things best left unsaid for fear of projectile vomiting. All cooked to the consistency of charcoal briquettes of burnt shoe leather & served in a fashion that only a masochist could love...
I have tasted the ambrosia that is *real* Bacon from an ExPat butcher that prided herself on knowing "how it should be done", and to her I offer my eternal gratitude. They were strips thick enough to look like meat, enough of a meat:fat ratio to be obvious it was an actual MEAT product (as in "from an animal" versus "off a conveyer belt"), & cooked to a juicy, tender, heavenly perfection that made me realize that "Hey, Bacon is Meat. My steak doesn't go crunch, so why should my Bacon? Chefs shouldn't be burning the Bacon!" & thus begin my own personal campaign of anti-burnt-pseudo-Bacon in restaurants & at home.
I know the "Burnt is good!" crowd will probably flame broil & rake me over the coals with the down votes, but I feel I must strip away the crunchy FUD & get to the tender Truth of the matter. =-)p
Bob, I've always wondered why Charlie didn't get sick & fekkin' tired of Lucy's constant bullshit with the ball, decide to get even for a change, & ignore the ball to kick her in the ass instead. Laugh as she screams a nice high arc over the goal posts, throw up the arms in classic Spanish soccer announcer delight & scream "GOAL!" at the tops of his lungs.
But then I also wondered why Linus didn't pause in his piano playing at Lucy's interruption, tell her to fek off, then slam her nose in the key cover when she refused to leave him alone. "Listen bitch, the blade cuts both ways & NO MEANS NO! Go away! You're a bitch! Die already you cockwomble! AAAAHHHHH!"
*Cough*
I never did like that girl... =-Jp
Tests designed to weed the Humans from the computers are often difficult if not impossible for the Humans to solve, yet obscenely easy for the Computers to thwart.
Audio tests that can't be heard by anyone without (perfect) hearing, yet a Computer can filter out the background hiss/cracks/pops/crap to get the code to be repeated.
Visual tests that can't be properly (or at all) seen by anyone without (perfect) vision, yet the Computers can pick out the bits they need in less time than it takes a Human to even focus on the image in the first place.
And when the Human fails to get the answer right the first time in the few seconds allowed, we're given a new test to try again... and again... and again... all while the Computer snorted in amusement, handed over the answer, & got past the tester's desk without even breaking stride.
This is the exact opposite of what the test is supposed to do, yet it's the Humans that get the shaft for our all-too-Human failures.
Thank you for those CAPTCHAs. I hope you choke on them & die.
A friend of mine told me this evening that's *exactly* how her day went. Her employer mandated all their files be in the cloud, all their programs hosted there, & crowed happily about the money the company would save in doing so. Right up until they have *any* issue with said cloud provider that stops their work dead in its tracks. She couldn't get to their customer files thus she couldn't interact with said customers (lest they want said changes she was unable to make) & that left her with nothing to do all day but read her (physical) book.
I asked if she was told to do make-work/busy-work in the mean time, to which she laughed "That would have required a connection to our host. I'll give you three guesses what we DIDN'T have all day and the first three don't count!"
She got paid to sit on her ass & read a book today. And so did all her coworkers in their office. All because some CxO decided "the cloud" was the way to save gobs of money. I wonder if the idled employees got paid today out of said CxO's Golden Parachute to pound the lesson home, but I'm afraid the company will simply take it out on the innocent employees rather than the person that caused the situation to happen in the first place.
Tell them that any modifications to public security methouds must be immediately & unilaterally mirrored to the government & military security methods. You want to be added to my otherwise secure conversation without my knowing? Then I want the same ability & "right" to do the same to that supposedly secure & scrambled phone on your desk. You want to listen in on my friends & I discussing how we hate your fucking traiterous asses, then we want the same capability to listen in on you discussing how you have been/currently are/plan to increase fucking us over. Don't like it? Neither do we.
At Christoph, re: power source.
I vote we pack each satelite with a telephone handset sanitizer on a peddle powered generator, make them peddle so the generator produces oxygen, with a byproduct being the power for the relay laser links & such. If they stop peddlin' the sat stops talkin' & we send up another one to replace the dead one. They're cheap as chips, entirely expendable, & nobody cares if we lose 'em by the hundreds... and that goes for the satelites too! =-D
*Cough*
Don't feel bad, you're not alone in the confusion. It sounded to me that it amounted to "Did $X work? If True then remember $X else forget $x & try $y instead" repeated at random until the bot eventually figures out the sequence of $x's that completes the game. Ok so they tried a new algorythm to do it, but it's still just lipstick on the pig. Maze solving bots have been around for ages. Unlike the maze solving bots of yore though, you're letting this one pick a random starting point inside the maze. That's cheating. You have to figure out the path to get to that point inside the maze before you can continue from there, you can't simply teleport into the maze & say "I'm starting from here. Don't like it, too bad." WE don't get to teleport to a random starting point, so neither should the bot. You start from the entrance like everyone else. If you die en route then you start over from the beginning like the rest of us. And that's for a static maze that never changes. You want to teleport in at random? Fine, but we get to randomize the maze if you do, every time you do, so your teleportation results in you never knowing if you're solving the same maze as last time. Don't like it? Too bad.
Now shut up, go back to start, & find the damned cheese the right way.
If you'll excuse me I need caffeine & a nap. =-)p
Why would you pay to watch? You don't have to, the stream would be free from too many sources to stop. But by using the PPV stream & sending them your money in gratitude, might just prompt them to do the same thing with other public figures in dire need of a Yorkie mauling. The heads of AT&T, BT, Capita, Comcast, Dixons, Equifax, France (just because he's French, that's why!), Orange, TalkTalk, Verizon, Virgin, etc etc etc... Wouldn't you PAY to see them shoved off a roof & Bungied into a shallow pool of slobbering, slathering, rabbid, insane (redundant), hungry puppies?
Because I needed a short legged breed that yaps constantly & drives people insane. I can never remember how to spell Chihuahuahuahuahu*slap* or Dachsundundundun*smack* so I picked Yorkie instead.
I could have picked TeaCup Poodles instead, but I'm not *that* Evil. (Doctor Evil pinkie gesture) =-D
I think it would be amusing as hell to strap a bungie cord to his ankles, shove him off the roof of the Tower, & put a very shallow ("Kiddie") pool at the bottom filled with angry Yorkies. He'd scream the entire way down, the screams would rile up the Yorkies to a fever pitch, the *barely* in time stop at the bottom would bonk his head into the bottom of the pool, at which point the Yorkies would get a moment to maul him. Then the cord would yank him back up, let him catch his breath, at which point the cycle repeats as he falls once more.
Televise the event, put it on PayPerView to make some *serious* money, & let the world watch as Zuck gets questioned between each shove off the roof.
"Mister Zuckerberg, did you authorize the debaucle?"
I don't know what- *Shove* AAAAIIIIIEEEEE!
*Yorkie mauling*
"Once more. Did you authorize the debaucle?"
I *sob* have no idea *sob* what yo- *SHOVE* AAAAIIIIIEEEE!
(A digital counter to one side shows the current PPV total cash in the coffers; a second line shows the number of billions of "Likes" for the event.)
"Hmm... it seems we've paid off the national debt five times over. We should have thought of this sooner!"
*Cough*
I'm not entirely sure if you were merely being (rightfully) snarky or what, but you're too close to being on the mark.
I'm using an Intel NextUnitOfComputing (NUC). It is *entirely* Intel chipsets from audio, video, wireless, LAN, HDD/SSD, mobo, *everything*. I read other tech fora dedicated to doing interesting things with a NUC including keeping it running in the face of Win10 shitty updates. MS can't even get an entirely Intel based machines drivers right! I *might* accept some brand x generic mobo by some 99thParty maker that used such dodgy chipsets that even the manufacturer couldn't write working drivers for the bloody thing, but this is *Intel* we're talking about. FFF MS & Intel have been in bed together so long the duolopy is known as "Wintel" for a very good reason. And MS can't even get proper drivers working for their bed buddy.
At what point does a regular Joe Average on the street simply throw up his hands & say "ENOUGH!"? If MS can't even keep a *NUC* working then there's SFA hope for "obscure" makers like Alienware, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, & others.
At Tiggity, I just turn off JS entirely. If a site refuses to load because of it, then I do a search for "cache: $URL" to get a plain text version of the page & read the content anyway. A site can whinge about cookie policies & JS requirements all they want, I'm not agreeing to (nor allowing) either "requirement". If I can access my (new! WOOHOO!) banks site without JS enabled then a simple news site can jolly-well cough up their content without it either.
At Bod, you say returning to HTML 1.0 as if it were a BAD thing. Given how much shit everything newer keeps introducing into the mix with which site builders then use to fuck with us, I'd say pruning said bits out with a chainsaw & extreme prejudice is a GOOD thing. So what if you have to click next to get more content, at least then you don't have to worry if the JS they're using to serve up such pages is about to deliver a virus instead.
I realize & accept that I'm a luddite in this regard, but then maybe my "luddite paranoia" has grounds given all the shit being flung at us in the hopes that some of it sticks. =-(
Are they like LEGO bricks? Can you build with them? Do they come in prepackaged assortments with bright & colourful diagram instructions on how to build each model? Can they then be disassembled & put together any way we wish to make things of our own imaginative creation? Do they come in extra large sizes for children like Duplo, extra tiny like the advanced stuff, & with controller systems that allow us to motorize & cyberize the different creations? Can we buy them at the local Tesco/Walmart? Can we buy them in bulk from various resellers? Is there an Ebay market of used bricks? Can we buy specialty sets?
Last but not least, do I need to refill my dried frog pills?
At Trollslayer, putting their head on a fish.
Perhaps bragging rights for the fish?
"Look at me! I've got SatNad's head grafted to my ass!"
Why does that make you happy?
"Because now when I squeaze my cheeks I can do this!"
*Picture of the Pike reaching Mach 1 on an exhaust plume of marketing bullshit & hot air bubbles*
COOL! I want one of those, too!
=-)p
If MS is a $950B company then 4% would be $38B. Twenty-Eight separate GDPR fines would thus result in a *One Trillion Sixty-Four Billion* dollar fine.
I like the way you think & bow before your awesomeness. Please remind me to never piss you off. =-D
