Safety driver at the wheel of self-driving Uber car that killed a pedestrian is charged with negligent homicide

Mark Exclamation

Re: However

"Humans cannot maintain a high level of concentration for long periods when not actually doing anything." - This exactly. If I was sitting there in the driver's seat not actually driving the car, my attention would wander fairly quickly. I agree that this job is impossible to do to an acceptable standard, and no-one can be expected to react appropriately quickly if circumstances dictate. The whole thing is unreasonable.

It is completely different if you are actually driving the vehicle.

Re: Thought experiment

Re: How many does that database say read El-reg ?

"It might not be high-value, but I've long assumed that the PLA is active here." Exactly this. Of course they're active here. There are often posts here supporting China's activities, often linked to posts critical of them. The CCP's cronies are everywhere, trying to make China look truly wonderful. Truth is, they only accept international law when it suits them. Oh crap, now I'm a target!

Actually, long service leave is 13 weeks leave (without the 17.5% leave loading) after 10 years, and continues to accrue for each year thereafter. I should know, I've been with the same company for 33 years. We also have the ability to cash-out accrued sick leave - one week's worth every year on start-date anniversary.

When Huawei leaves, the UK doesn't lead in 5G, says new report commissioned by... er... Huawei

Mark Exclamation

Re: Where's the proof?

Seems you're replying to my comment. If so, I can't see the relevance. In one part you seem to support my comments, but your introduction is obviously snarky. And thanks for "doing my work for me", but I didn't realise I had any to do. If you can't see what's bleedingly obviously going on, what's written doesn't matter.

Oh, and if you're not replying to my post, my bad.

Mark Exclamation

Re: Where's the proof?

Agreed, but it's not the potential of backdoor that is the problem. Huawei is a puppet of the Chinese Communist Party and *must* do anything they demand. Furthermore, with the increasing bullying China is doing to its trading partners (see Australia for example), the world needs to step away from China and source products from elsewhere, and leave China in the cold until/unless they become reasonable. Rejecting Huawei is a very good place to start, and we must add many other companies and products to the list. COVID has decimated much of the world's economies, so for most countries it can't get much worse, so now is the time to reject Chinese made products, preferably make our own, or at least trade with friendly, international-law abiding countries.

Sorry, China needs to be targeted until they become a trusted country with which to do business. I have no beef with Huawei, but if they have to suffer in order to bring the Chinese government to its senses, then I support these measures. The world needs to do more.

Huawei set to exit server, storage, networking business in the UK

Mark Exclamation

Re: Not so fast

Exactly this. There is no free trade with China, it is all lopsided. You want access to the Chinese market, you give them what they want first. You try to put conditions on Chinese companies getting access to Western markets, it's unfair and they impose sanctions and/or tariffs.

And when China "licences" IP, it just means they can use it whenever they want - it amounts to theft. Then they copy it and patent it wherever they can get away with it.

That's why the US has gone the way they have, just giving China a taste of its own business practices.

US ponders tech export ban on SMIC, China's biggest chipmaker

Mark Exclamation

Re: Abiding the law

You show considerable ignorance of the Chinese Communist Party.

ALL Chinese companies are beholden to the wishes and demands of the Chinese government. Any company that refuses or questions these demands tend to lose their top management very quickly, and they disappear forever, replaced by compliant management. And this is why you can't trust Huawei's protestations about sanctions and saying they have no link to the CCP. They may not have a direct link, as such, but they are legally-bound to do what the CCP demands.

The USA is far from perfect, but they don't do this.

Taiwan tightens rules around local tech firms sharing tech with China

Mark Exclamation

It's all really moot.....

Hey, Boeing. Don't celebrate your first post-grounding 737 Max test flight too hard. You just lost another big contract

Mark Exclamation

Re: It takes two-to-tango

Yes, there are two of them, but originally only one of them was used at a time, alternating with every flight. The crash flight(s) just happened to be using the faulty one at the time. Using both of them is an improvement, but as you said, there needs to be three, just as Airbus does.

Mark Exclamation

Re: Except plenty more.

Exactly this. The airlines no longer have any use for the aircraft they have on order, and have no money, either, both due to Covid. What better way to save and make money than to cancel orders and sue for a completely unrelated reason?

Waiting for the CCP trolls to vent their spleens.

Mark Exclamation

Re: "fist fights"

Yep, the rest of the world needs to take notice, support India, and move away from China. It will be difficult (I keep trying to buy non-Chinese-made products but it's almost impossible) but we have to start now. China cannot be trusted by anyone, including those that think they are "friends" or allies. You're only a friend of China for as long as you bow to China's demands.
