Could we fucking kill it already?
And rewrite from scratch. It cannot possibly become worse.

> I would be upset that the USA is taking it upon itself to police a UN agency.
Not so sure anymore about this since the USA took care of FIFA. It's beyond mysterious that everybody and his dog knew the FIFA is a corrupt bunch and no EU country (especially Germany!) did anything.
So, in hope that the USA handle this wisely, beer.
Actual conversation with our best man[TM] there.
He: "We could not run test. Does not work."
Me: "What do you mean 'Does not work'".
He: "Does not run!"
Me: "How far did it run?"
He: "Stopped."
Me: "Where did it stop? What's on the screen."
He: "BIOS."
Me: "What do you see?"
He: "Press any key to continue."
Me: "Please press a key and tell me what what you see."
He: "Now working!"
Me: [click] "AAAAaaaaaarghhh!!!!!"
I did call him because the test (certification) was 24 hours overdue. Best man[TM] did quit to join another company paying a few bucks more only weeks later. Phone calls with the rest of the bunch were essentially impossible, "let's continue this via email" my standard phrase when insanity crept up. But, HEY, they were cheap!
> It ain't always cheaper in the long run to ship the jobs to India.
Wot? I have yet to see ONE example where such outsourcing leeds to actual cost reduction (not just book keeping trickery) and keeping the quality.
The majority of "outsourcing to India" I have seen led to no cost reduction and to quality so deep in caca land you wouldn't believe unless you actually had dealt with those "specialists".
> But can it handle doorknobs?
That is unlikely: The lever-type ones should be doable. Turn-knobs less likely. Add the slightest unlock mechanism on top (like pressing a button to unlock) and any existing robot is fucked. This is a major problem with robots for rescue tasks.
Human hands and brains are a fine combination.
> ...and 50% of my hard disk space under Linux is occupied by symlinks.
Hard disks with even more then 40 Megabyte of space are available.
Back to serious: the mdm issue is addressed (not: solved) here (lwn). You are welcome.
> Astronauts have a level of bravery that is completely beyond my comprehension.
In the Houston space center they have the capsules prior to the moon program. These pilots where put into tiny tin shells with plenty of switches around them. When I saw them my very first thought was "oh, dear!". Apparent safety measures: pray before you go.
Walking towards the Saturn 5 also caused repeated jaw dropping. One simply cannot appreciate the scale without standing near to it. My thoughts there: "America, fuck yeah!". A monument of dedication.
Physicists now do learn programming (here in GrumpenLand), at least where I checked the courses offered. The quality of such courses varies quite a bit.
When a student, I took a C course where the teacher tried for many hours to explain what a pointer is. He failed miserably because he didn't understand it himself. I did tell a fellow student that I failed to understand that darn complicated pointer stuff. He replied "but you know assembler, it's just a bloody adress". That very second I got it.
