Hardware hacker: Walling off China from RISC-V ain't such a great idea, Mr President

Tubz Silver badge

China is probably laughing at the US Of A$$ right now, billions they would have spent on American chip tech, now being used for home grown tech and yes it may not be as fast or efficient, but for the couple of years they have been at it, they have come along way and they have the brains and resources to catch up. As Huang has said, restrictions will probably harm US Of Anal in the long term, China is happy to play the long waiting game !

Brits make Amazon, Meta stop using third-party data to undercut rivals

Tubz Silver badge

Amazon UK board meeting ..

We got caught again.

How much is the fine this time?

Nothing, we just promise not to do it again.

LOL, so business as usual, tell the accountants to order the new new Mercs for senior management and pass me the 50 year old Scotch and £100 cigars rolled on Cuban virgin thighs.

UK data watchdog fines three text spammers for flouting electronic marketing rules

Tubz Silver badge

Do they actually publish how much of the fines they actually recover against what they issue ? if not why not, something to hide, like they don't bother their overpaid arses and it's just lip service to justify their existence, wages and generous government pension pots.

Mid-contract telco price hikes must end, Ofcom told

Tubz Silver badge

When customer agrees a contract and a price for a length of time it should be fixed, once that period of time has expired, it should be fixed as a monthly rolling price minus the cost of any handset charges paid for. Mid contract rises are just a rip off, we know, Telco's know it, Ofcom know it (but is too chicken shit and in bed with Telco's) and use the same old excuses of investing in network, if that was so, how come for example, Vermin Media have such bad oversubscription on lines and cannot guarantee a static speed during peak times that match what your paying for ?

Theora video codec to be coded out from Chrome and Firefox

Tubz Silver badge

Should the browser not come with just a W3C standard level of support and then uses just in time delivery to install plugins/extensions/support packages as required and user authorised, as most people have fast enough broadband to do this. Browsers should become faster, more secure and easy to maintain?

Lenovo’s phantom ThinkPad X1 foldable laptop finally materializes

Tubz Silver badge

Can't see anybody selling a lot of $3500 laptops unless the users have had the corporate accountants shot, to stop them blocking sales and their own brains removed.

Batterygate bound for Blighty as UK court approves billion-dollar Apple compensation case

Tubz Silver badge

Re: extend the life of a failing battery

Agree, why should I replace a functioning phone that may still be receiving updates due to a poor battery, this is just Apple having cake, eating it and making us pick up the bill. No part of any equipment that degrades over time should not be within reason, user replaceable.

The UK government? On the right track with its semiconductor strategy?

Tubz Silver badge

Yeh our semiconductor strategy is running on the unlaid track HS2 will not be using, except without the funding. We all know it will be a disaster, just waiting to see who will be blamed and who will make a nice profit?

Your ex isn't the only one stalking your social media posts. The Feds are, too

Big Brother

I thought this was another China story and realised it was the US Of A$$ and then thought, frack it, no real difference between the two.

Apple jacks prices to juice profits because $19.3B a quarter isn't enough

Tubz Silver badge

and the media companies wonder why piracy is still big for movie/tv, when 90% of the stuff on offer is crap (Amazon it is case 99%), force fed adverts and viewing habits tracked and price keeps going up.

Former IBM Canada worker wins six-figure payout for wrongful dismissal

Tubz Silver badge

Years back was offered a job by IBM, wages and T&Cs much better but on visiting what would be my place of work, I could feel a disturbance in the force and my inner voice saying, run away. So glad I stayed with ICL (Fujitsu), yeh I know better the devil you know, at least they acknowledged by length of service.

Ex-ASML worker accused of stealing chipmaking secrets for China is Huawei to a new job

Tubz Silver badge

Re: It won't make any real difference

I wouldn't put a time scale on China being able to reverse engineer, they have a lot of clever engineers, case in point, 1945 UK supplied the Soviets with Rolls-Royce Nene engine and blueprints for civilian use, within a year they had a copy in the Mig-15 wiping the floor with western jets for speed and manoeuvrability.

Millions of smart meters will brick it when 2G and 3G turns off

Tubz Silver badge

Re: Farce

Don't worry, our Governments be it Tory or I dread, Labour, are on track and within budget to complete that, we'll the demolish part anyway, the rebuild will be put on long term hold, as we don't have enough brickies and the popup renewable 4 bedroom homes for under £20K have yet to be made in mass.

Tubz Silver badge

All Damn Lies

Remember the claims by Government, Energy Industry and the Green muppets that we will all save money in the long wrong and we'll knew it was a lie but practically forced to go along with it, once again the consumer picks up the bill, when it should be the energy companies for putting in kit they knew would be obsolete in a few years.

So what if China has 7nm chips now, there's no Huawei it can make them 'at scale'

Tubz Silver badge

U.S of A$$ is a 3rd world country to 99% of the population, the other 1% power elite are in denial and doing everything they can to keep the status quo.

Apple's iPhone 12 woes spread as Belgium, Germany, Netherlands weigh in

Tubz Silver badge

"IF" the iPhone 12x is deemed to break rules, would be cheaper for Apple to just recall and replace with iPhone 15, less bad publicity and chances EU and countries will go softly on the fines.

Microsoft to kill off third-party printer drivers in Windows

Tubz Silver badge

Universal drivers should have been part of Windows 7 and later. Microsoft should have told hardware manufacturers to either make their hardware work with standard windows drivers or it doesn't get compatibility validation and nobody will buy ! I believe this is the way Apple do things ?

22 million Brits suffer broadband outage blues and are paying a premium for it

Tubz Silver badge

Compensation, good luck getting that, OFCOM gave enough wiggle room in the regulations that 99% of the time ISP find a loop hole to refuse. Any downtime, no matter how small these days, should be an instant 1 day credit, only then will we see ISP come together to provide 100% uptime resilient network.

We need to be first on the Moon, uh, again, says NASA

Tubz Silver badge

China signed the UN Space Treaty back in 83/84 so cannot legally claim anything, if the block access, I doubt the UN could do anything. Other nations could try and force their hand and end up with conflict in space, which will eventually end up back on Earth. ?

China's great CPU hope – Loongson – may be only four years behind Intel

Tubz Silver badge

In the real world, chip is probably good enough to do the job, "IF" 4 years behind Intel, in cpu terms we are only talking a very small amount in time difference in processing instructions and to be western cpu independent, it is probably worth it to the Chinese and allies. Next comes GPU and they have network, memory and storage independence. So very soon can give Uncle Sam's export block list the finger !

Soon the most popular 'real' desktop will be the Linux desktop

Tubz Silver badge

Gamers, for Microsoft they are a nice to have bunch at the moment bring in the coin, but do you think they won't be seriously looking at cloud only gaming subscriptions. Imagine if they do get Activision Blizzard and any other studios offering themselves up for purchasing, Microsoft graciously offer 10 year support for other consoles to appease everybody and then bang, cloud only Windows support and XBox becomes a thin client. Linux and game studios really need to start talking and supporting each other, problem is too too many splintered versions !

Clingy Virgin Media won't let us leave, customers complain

Tubz Silver badge

long time Vermin Moaner customer, when it works its great, you need to speak to customer services, heaven help you, long queue times and staff who barely know which what they are doing and to top it all off that's the UK call centre staff, if you get the Indian call centre, well I'm not going there to get called racist !

Framework starts taking orders for 16-inch repairable, upgradeable laptop

Tubz Silver badge

Framework innovate, sadly they will just be bought out or pushed aside by the big boys, as they adapt to the modular future at lower costs.

Meta can call Llama 2 open source as much as it likes, but that doesn't mean it is

Tubz Silver badge

If Nick Clegg said water was wet, I would demand a second opinion from an independent body !

Norway bans Meta's behavioral advertising with threats of wrist-slap fines

Tubz Silver badge

$100K a day may not seem like a lot to Meta if they just ignore the ruling but if they review and find they are deliberately ignoring, whose to say that goes up to $1m a day or more, soon starts to hurt bottom line.

EU gives its blessing to reopen data pipelines to the US

Tubz Silver badge

ahhh the beloved EU mandarins, how to ensure your employed on a big fat juicy wage and all the trimmings, until the golden pension goose knocks on your door, keep submitting the same old crap legislation that gets kicked out by the courts, rinse, repeat, collect your Wonga, while sipping on that 250é bottle of wine, paid for by the tax peasants !

Oh, great. Yet another tech billionaire thinks he can get microblogging right

Tubz Silver badge

app goes after plenty, including location, personal information that may include "Name, Email address, User IDs, Address, Phone number, Political or religious beliefs, Sexual orientation and Other info."

Financial information is also accessible, as are health and fitness data, messages, photos and videos, and even voice or sound recordings.

Also up for grabs are files and documents, calendar events, contacts, the app's behavior, web browsing history, and device IDs.

Far too much information for my liking, so no thanks, same for all the social media platforms.

Brit broadband subscribers caught between crappy connections and price hikes

Tubz Silver badge

My biggest bug gripe is upgrading a service, too only have end up slower or unstable, then fighting with, in this VM to get it sorted and taking weeks while paying up and good luck getting a service refund, last one was to a 1Gig service and waiting months for the new Hub5 to replace the Hub4 to fully utilise the provisioned bandwidth and when they finally did order a Hub5, the cheaky gits wanted to recharge me the install fee again, that I already payed for when then filled in a couple of web pages to change connection plan, always think this charge is a nice way to rip off your customers !

TSA wants to expand facial recognition to hundreds of airports within next decade

Tubz Silver badge

Hmm opt out of TSA facial ID, which reality means, you flag yourself as a subject of interest straight away and now get a thorough strip search and finger probing that real aliens only dream of, why else would you opt out ?

The number’s up for 999. And 911. And 000. And 111

Tubz Silver badge

In theory a great idea, in practice probably easy too do next generation devices, cost isn't expensive if shared globally, problem is getting all the countries together to agree to one standard and the cost, in the modern world that is impossible. Even if this was agreed at UN level by all, the arguing starts, whose standard, USA, European, Chinese Russian, who gets the contracts, who pays for it, will bigger and wealthier countries pay more than smaller poor countries.

Now Apple takes a bite out of encryption-bypassing 'spy clause' in UK internet law

Tubz Silver badge

Never mind "think of the children and terrorist" tired excuse, the spooks already have tools needed, more of a "think of the politicians" and their dirty dealings behind encryption, I bet they go on a do not intercept list, if approved in to law.

JP Morgan accidentally deletes evidence in multi-million record retention screwup

Tubz Silver badge

hmm lets look at the maths, $4M fine and slap on wrist for deleting records that are needed under 12 investigations and blame a 3rd party, that if proven would cost $xxxxxM. Seems like a good deal for JPM.

A (cautionary) tale of two patched bugs, both exploited in the wild

Tubz Silver badge

with ref. TP-Link Archer AX21, this is another example of why when consumer goods go EOL by manufacturer. they should be supported for a few years afterwards. When that time is up and many remain in use as they are still perfectly capable of doing their job, the hardware diagrams and software source should be released, communities are probably even more capable of fixing things than manufacturers own support teams.

UK smart meter rollout years late and less than two thirds complete

Tubz Silver badge

Re: Smart, my ass.

Shell Energy ex-First Utility, say no more !

Tubz Silver badge

All i can say, is if Boris can be held accountable for alleged misleading and lying to Parliament, then the politicians, advisors, uncivil servants, energy cartels should be held accountable to the public for lying through their back teeth and knowing it was all a lie over energy savings and using go green as a reason to have them. We all know that at some point, they will use the meters to see who is using what energy at a specific point in the day and charge us accordingly, if they are not doing so already, as my meter reports weird usage spikes when nothing switched on, or maybe thats the automatic tax called a standing charge being applied that never gets spent on improving the distribution networks and used to bail out failed energy companies ???

Logitech boss Bracken Darrell steps down, effective ASAP

Tubz Silver badge

Never buy Logitech again, overpriced, low quality, piss poor support !

Beijing proposes rules to stop Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networks going rogue

Tubz Silver badge

Re: Puts me off sharing my Wi-Fi

Some ISP's already have this feature, like Virgin Media, their customers can hop on to a guest wifi supplied by households which is "supposed" isolated and any naughty traffic should not come back to the household, but to the customers who logs in. You could in theory do the same offering a guest wifi that has a login portal with all the usual T&Cs logging of MACs destination IPs etc to try and cover your backside if the plod come knocking, now the question is would that be a defence in a court?

Windows XP's adventures in the afterlife shows copyright's copywrongs

Tubz Silver badge

Simple solution, software or even hardware that a publisher/manufacturer no longer supports, all locks removed and source code/schematics should instantly become open source. yes you get the likes of Microshaft moaning, as the new version of product-x is backwards compatible and maybe using the same code, but that's their problem, you can't EOL code being used in the next version or set a 10 year maximum residual copyright before it goes open source and less for hardware that can be classed as obsolete with a couple of years without hurting a companies IP.

Get ready for Team America: AI Police

Tubz Silver badge

Biden probably thinks AI is used to replace a degrading brain and is first on transplant list.

Keir Starmer's techno-fix for the NHS: Déjà vu disaster or brave new blunder?

Tubz Silver badge

Simple, sell off all the hospitals, make all GP surgeries private if not already and then let market forces take control, those that provide god service, meet targets at a competitive prices to the NHS, get the patients, thus the health companies make a nice profit, become bigger, invest in their facilities and build even better hospitals or go under, works for the hotel industry as a slightly wide example. No to private medical insurance to cover costs, as this will always deprive the poorest in the community.

That Meta GDPR fine is €1.2B. Plus biz must stop sending EU data to US

Tubz Silver badge

Irish DPC is nothing short of a rubber stamp office for Mega Corps USA and the EU bigwigs should be kicking it's backside to get it to put people first and not businesses.

Microsoft will upgrade Windows 10 21H2 users whether they like it or not

Tubz Silver badge

waits for class action from consumers or sue ball from major Win10 21H2 site that specifically blocked updates and Microsoft screw all their PC's, should be an interesting court case over who actually owns what and has the rights to do it.

UK emergency services take DIY approach amid 12-year wait for comms upgrade

Chinese company claims it's built batteries so dense they can power electric airplanes

Tubz Silver badge

Looking forward to Samuel L Jackson sequels to Snakes On A Plane, Exploding Batteries And Fires On A Plane and AI Pilot On A Plane, shouldn't take long to write the scripts with AI, I'll take my Oscar's now thanks.

Europe doesn't just pass laws on Big Tech algorithms, it sets up cop shops to police them

Tubz Silver badge

Good luck getting Microsoft/Google/Meta etc to share their algorithms, as these will be trade secrets and when ECAT come to enforce requirements. court cases will be years in the making, that the algorithms request will be out of date, that they will probably then hand them over, close the court case and open a new one for the current algorithm. Rinse and repeat, legal costs tiny compared to value of the algorithms.

More ads in Windows 11 Start Menu could be last straw for some

Tubz Silver badge

Re: lots of possibilities

Can just see the advert on your dashboard ... I see you had a crash, did you know if you had upgraded to Microsoft Windows v11 Automative Pro, we would have applied the brake 0.4 seconds quicker, tightened the seat belts 0.2 seconds quicker and deployed the airbag 1.1 seconds quicker, way above the industry standard, all for $15pm subscription and a free automated emergency call included.

Tubz Silver badge

If M$ don't open up the ads to others then they will face another anticompetitive probe. No ads in an O/S ever ! Yes M$ may say we give you Windows free to consumers, but the people with an IQ above that of a M$ patch developer, know the tax is hidden in a new PC sale price to cover all consumers running Windows.
