Sony Ericsson lights up Xperia Arc

chris
FAIL

SE + Android = FAIL

SE has a very hard time getting their act together. We will see this phone in the market in Q4 when every spec on this phone is out of date. Plus to top it off they will not release any updates for it. BTW: The x10 is already being discontinued by AT&T. Think the Arc could make it at least 6 months? I don't think so.

Wot? No glasses! Tosh goes 3D crazy

Starting somewhere.......

I think that this is ground work for a "Home Theater" revolution. They are pushing crap at us because they do not have the production/low cost ability to sell to the consumer.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that one day when I watch a movie at home I will truly feel as if I am in the movie itself.

Reward for doing what you are supposed to?

Imagine your boss comes up to you and says: "You punch the clock on time everyday, and for that your get a pay raise."

Is see no difference here.

How much will the salary be for the person or persons to go through the "Data" and give the rewards? Nothing wrong at all with adding that to the fiscal budget.

Obviously the author is not familiar with SE.

The question posted in the article was: "Who would have suspected, for instance, that the Satio's file manager and list of applications lay beneath the Organiser icon, which looks at first glance like a calendar app?"

Answer: Any SE user.

The way to sell a phone is to put features people will use. Wi-Fi and GPS are two of the hottest things right now for the average business user. If I'm not mistaken I believe that is RIM's target market. Cell companies need to get out of the office / lab and in touch with their customer base.

If it's not yours..... you don't care.

That is what a majority of people think when they use property that is not theirs. Ever go just the speed limit in a rental car? Did you really care about the stain on the wall you made in that apartment (or flat) you rented years ago?

Sadly people have no sense of ownership when they didn't pony up the cash for whatever it is they're using.

I had a user take his laptop on the road and in the hotel he decided to search for porn. He saw a few pop-ups and didn't think twice about clicking them. To only his surprise he got infected with several Trojans due to his porn frolicking session. His excuse was that he didn't see a problem at the time cause he wasn't on our company network, yet using the company laptop did not seem to bother him.

The point is that we as "IT" need to make users accountable for their actions. We have a clause in our handbook that does. I did the work to repair the laptop and billed the employee. You know he's not going to type "young sexy babes" in Google anymore.

Well at least......

We didn't lose 500,000,000 jobs this month. According Nancy Pelosi 500 "MILLION" americans are losing jobs every month that congress delays the pork belly er i mean "stimulus" bill that Obama wants congress to pass.

At least if we all took birth control we could stimulate the economy, or something else, and turn the country around.

US carriers hedge open network claims

chris
Stop

This is the only reason.......

This explains why the majority of the American public is not aware of the options about purchasing unbranded phones.

"We have, as an industry, conditioned customers to very expensive computers put in their hands for very few dollars......"

Phone carriers get great incentives for pushing phones that are branded under their name. The average American cell buyer wants the best "deal". So they are brainwashed into believing that buying a phone from the operator is the only option, and it only cost $40.

This is a gas......

"But I would also tell you that the big double digital percentage of customers that put those devices onto out network have a less than good T-Mobile experience,"

The reason is not because it's a unbranded phone, rather it's an out dated network. I get a better experience with my SE unbranded than I did w/ my friend's SE branded. I almost spat my coffee over my computer when I read this. Does he really think that people would buy into his finger pointing?

Why the US faces broadband price hikes

chris

are we really eating all the bandwidth?

Does anybody know where the proof is? I read articles about how ISPs are getting bogged down because 1% of users are using massive quantities of bandwidth per month. But do they really need to charge more because people are actually using the network's potential? I mean seriously, If I had 10mb download bandwidth i wouldn't use it browsing the Reg. I would use it downloading my favorite porn.

As companies grow they invest in bigger office space, company vehicles, and resources to support the business and prices may go up, but inflation usually is the biggest cause for price hikes. Why would a FCC ruling effect the prices? I would understand if they upped the price because they upgraded the network to more bandwidth.

Vendor touts PC's Mac OS X compatibility

chris
Alert

TO: ha ha

I'm sure Steve, deep down, is happy. This is what exposed the general public to DOS back in the day. Ultimately Apple can own more market share by a move like this.

There is a downside though. OS x is relatively cheap as it stands right now. A full OS for 150 compared to a windows flavor of equal features for 300 or more. If Apple starts to lose money because they are not selling hardware marked up by 200% then I'm sure we'll see OS x be closer in price to Windows.

Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot C902 cameraphone

chris
Alert

The way I see it.......

I upgraded from my K790a last week. Yes Yes I know the question you are asking....... Why did you not get the 850? The answer, because I did not want to lug around a brick in my pocket. I'm happy I made that move. The author in this article is neglecting one very important bit of information about the 850......... BROD..... (blue ring of death). The 850's firmware tends to crap out, for whatever reason, after a few months. What makes the C902 and attractive phone is that the firmware has been rewritten for this device. Menu function is fast and stable. I can browse my calendar while listening to my Bluetooth headset with ease.

The other "upgrade" or change that was commented on is the touch buttons on the C902. I don't know where the author is coming from about "inadvertently switching to video". That hot key is on the top row, and all of the camera features are on the bottom row. It's still an improvement over the touch areas of 850. From what I heard they stay active all the time. God forbid you have a slightly larger ear while talking on the 850.

I think the author did a good job going over all the features of the phone, but I think he may be a Nokia fanboy. I would have at least rated the phone 80% - 85%.

@ Ryan .....(and)...... AT&T always seems forgotten.

I am a US mobile user. For years I used Verizon and was bound to only phones that they sell. In the market I'm in there are all the major players, Verizon, US Cellular, Sprint, AT&T, and T-mobile. To be honest I thought the same as you for the longest time. "I'm always bound to the carrier by my phone"................ Then I did my homework about 6 months ago.....................

I talked to all of the operators. Researched the different cellular technologies and phone manufacturers. I even polled my friends who used the different services.

In the end I found out that AT&T really did have an open network. They broadcast on all 4 of the GSM bands and are working on getting the HSDPA (3G) band in my area. The only hurdle is configuring the phone on the network.......... That is where you need to buy from a reputable manufacturer. Knock offs won't cut it, your support will be hit or miss. I buy through SE and they provide simple steps to configure my phone. Needless to say, I will be getting the X1, which is a windows mobile device.

The point is that AT&T, though it's one of the largest carrier here in the states, always seems forgotten. Even in this article...... no mention of AT&T. AT&T did win part of the block in certain markets. Why not mention it??

Record labels to ditch CD singles for USB Flash drives

chris

USB key?

I feel slightly confused by this move...........

So instead of the major record mafias allowing DRM free catalogs for online providers, we, as consumers, have to venture out of our comfortable abode to the record store and buy a USB stick. That will probably be DRM locked down. Which will only be able to be played in Windows Media Player after installing 3rd party software that will compromise my computer for a hacker to gain access.

What's next? Are we going to buy USB stick Towers to hold our collection?

Halo 3 UK launch fails to fire

chris

HALO 3 far better than expected.

So I did not wait in long lines for my copy, yet I did reserve it. I have owned an XBOX and last year decided to get the 360. I never purchased the previous Halo's. I saw them and really did not find the graphics that stellar. The primary reason I decided to make my most recent purchase was: Technology. I have seen older mediocre XBOX titles get transformed to vivid works of art.

Now i know there have been other titles that you can not tell the difference. But faith has helped me once again.

From the start of the game I knew I was in for a treat. Even the loading screen is a masterpiece. I read the comment about it being similar to "Unreal Tournament". I think that you can say all FPS' are similar. What I find stands out is the storyline . Ya it's cart blanch. And no matter how you play as long as you get through you'll move forward. But I find that the details in the ships, vehicles, The Prophet, even the Master Chief have definitely made me happy with my purchase.

And yes............... I have been up for six days playing Halo 3. ;-)

Netgear HDX101 200Mbps powerline Ethernet adaptor

chris

Better than Wi-FI

I purchased the "kit" to replace my current 802.11b network. It does not "drop" my connection and the latency is much more acceptable. It is around 2-4 ms during a ping test. This is compared to my 15 - 400 ms time with Wi-Fi. Unfortunately I do not have a Gigabyte switch so I can not test the full 200MB bandwidth. There is one CON to this technology right now. Multi Panel support does not exist. I have two circuit breakers in my home. Unfortunately the devices will not communicate if they are connected to different panels.

Over all, I am very pleased with this new product. I think that it has a lot of potential for home and business. Power companies may have a new revenue source.
