Northerners give up ID cards for Lent figures suggest

Ascylto
WTF?

Herr Flic

And don't forget ... there are no scanners widely in use for checking ID Cards.

Instead, we are advised to 'flick' the card ... it has a particular sound.

Are these people fucking crazy?

Yes.

Government spends £11k on ID card 'branding'

Ascylto
Big Brother

Which part of 'NO' don't they understand?

They spent £3,000,000 trying to convince Mancunians that a Congestion Charge was a good idea. We saw through their lies and deceptions then and they got a resounding 'NO'. Just what made them think an ID card availability was a good idea in Manchester shows just how far from reality our politicians like to live.

The politicos are mortally afraid that they could get Poll Tax type riots if they introduce compulsory ID cards so they'll try every backdoor method they can think of ... starting, of course, with the young and gullible. The present government have already got rid of habeas corpus, have succeeded in alienating the Police from the public, have introduce law upon law getting rid of rights the people have fought for since Magna Carta. You are no longer innocent until proven guilty. The government spurns ID legislation from the EU. They are SO afraid that they HAVE to have information on us and our whereabouts.

Stalinism?

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny;

when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

"... iPad is a flop ..." It's not even available yet, FFS!

You seem not to know much about hand-eye co-ordination. Many objects we observe are moving ... the eye compensates ... it really is wonderful.

3.22. Of course the iPads in the promo are on platforms! They're making a video for goodness sake and they'll use whatever it takes to make the video (& iPad) look good. We know that if a real iPad were propped on a person's legs it would move ... again, the eye compensates.

I would guess that many people will buy the case that allows angling of the iPad.

If the iPhone behaved as you suggest the iPad will ... how come it's such a success?

The Plain Truth

El Reg and other websites attract geeky people who know more than there is to know about computers. They are (probably) real wizzes with technology and the innards of phones, pads and computers.

They totally miss the point of Apple's strategy. They are so much up their own arses they can't see the train coming down the tracks.

Apple sells usability. Shininess and good industrial design are extras which are nice to have but not essential.

The reasons I use Mac at work and at home is because I'm NOT a geek. I just want my computer and phone to do what I want without a massively expensive IT staff to look after them. They work, for me, and I don't want to know HOW they work. I don't care if I can't download Jim Sproggett's Guide to the Complexities of C++ on my iPhone. I don't care if it's difficult to swap batteries in my iPod.

The plain truth is that the majority of people haven't a clue about computers. That's why IT staff make so much money and have so much influence in companies. They want computers just to work and if that is true for a Windows UI then that's fine.

Apple don't always get it right (Cube, TV etc.,) but when they do ... it gets BIG (they knocked Sony for six because Sony had its corporate head up its corporate bum). Same with the iPad. This device is what millions of users want ... a pretty device that switches on immediately, lets me read and reply to my emails, lets me surf the web, lets me read books, lets me watch films and, if I want, lets me do some basic stuff with flyers, accounts and the like. It's an absolute dream for millions of non-geeks.

And THAT is where Apple are clever. KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Sony takes aim at Apple iPhone, iPad

Ascylto
FAIL

Too clever by half

Sony have made some great devices and great concepts. However, like Apple, they are too proprietorial. I have a Sony camcorder ... good piece of kit but you have to have MemorySticks ... FAIL.

I have a Sony e-Reader ... good kit again, solid, well-built BUT it won't work with a Mac unless you use a third-party piece of software ... FAIL.

Like so many, they stand in the middle of the tracks and don't see the train coming towards them. They thought they were invincible and went for world domination then little Apple came along and bit their arse.

Make it well. Make it easy. Make it accessible to all.

Which part of 'NO' don't they understand?

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

O2 revamps Sim-only tariffs for end-of-contract iPhone owners

Ascylto
Gates Halo

Good so far, o2.

My o2 iPhone contract was for 18 months at £35 a month for 600 minutes and 500 texts and 'unlimited' internet. My new simplicity tariff with o2 is £20 a month (monthly tariff) and I get 700 minutes and 700 texts and 'unlimited' internet. It suits me just fine as I use about half of the available minutes and just a few of the texts. There MAY be better deals with Orange or Vodafone but, currently, the one thing the others can't manage is Customer Service which, in o2's case has been superb for me. I just hope o2 don't go the way of Orange and reduce their CS to one star out of ten (I don't think Voda ever had any service at all).

I want o2 to give us some tariffs for the iPad.

I Stuck with o2

Someone in a o2 shop switched me from my (expired) iPhone contract to the Simplicity tariff. If I joined online with my £20 a month I could get 700 minutes talk to any network, 1400 texts (no use to me) and unlimited internet (in practice over 3gb). AND I get a cheaper home broadband with o2.

More importantly than the above, however, is the one thing that, for the time being at any rate, is more important ... o2 really have got their Customer Services act together. They have been excellent in all my dealing with them and have UK call centres so I can understand them (Scots accents being OK).

So why would I change?

Let's see what deals they'll do with iPad 3g!
