You just don't get it do you? The iPhone may not be the best phone out there, it may not make your coffee or make love to you, but just look at the latest exhibitions ... there are more 'me too' iPhone look-alikes and swipe alikes than you can shake a stick at! They ALL want to copy the iPhone ... some may even produce better gadgets.
Give Apple, the iPhone in particular, it's due. It has woken up a sleeping industry which was content to take your dosh for very little in the way of innovation. Why, even Microsoft, that 'innovator' par excellence, has jumped on the bandwagon with it's store of applications ... just 3 years late (as usual).
Surprise, surprise ... I use an iPhone! Far from being a 'crap phone', it does exactly what I want and it does it simply and without fuss. Of course it doesn't have some features I would like (cut 'n paste) and I have to use my camera if I want decent photos, but it suits me just fine. And furthermore I don't rubbish other phones which, I'm sure, suit their owners just as well.

Too many wrongly characterize the debate as "security versus privacy." The real choice is liberty versus control. Tyranny, whether it arises under threat of foreign physical attack or under constant domestic authoritative scrutiny, is still tyranny. Liberty requires security without intrusion, security plus privacy. Widespread police surveillance is the very definition of a police state. And that's why we should champion privacy even when we have nothing to hide.
ID Cards are part of the anti-privacy agenda.

Nonsense!
The non-replaceable battery nonsense is just a ploy to batter Apple. There are plenty of replacement batteries available. If Apple themselves don't offer the service, third parties do. In order to get longer life (up to 5 years typical) and longer use, Apple have cleverly integrated the battery into available space in the latest 17" MacBook Pro. Even on expiry the battery IS replaceable.

Upgrade? I don't think so!
Sadly, Apple don't offer an 'upgrade' path or price. iLife is a purchasable package which comes 'free' with new Macs but if you want to 'upgrade' from '08 you have to pay the full price for '09. It's a bit like their naughty Quicktime Pro ... every time they introduce a ne version, it breaks your old one and you have to shell out more pounds for what is a very minor 'upgrade' for Pro.
Still, they have to maintain that 24 billion cash dollars amount in the banks!

No need for any text - excellent post. In case anyone wonders what's being talked about ... it's the Concentration Camp and other use of symbols. 'Asocial' is a good catch-all!
I think that if they do introduce ID Cards (and my vote will be determined by that issue) they should be in Welsh only. That will slow down the use of the data which will be stolen from the database or retrieved from the 'left-on-the-train' laptops. Thieves will have to employ Welsh Language translators so, a handy list of translations needs to be published. We could start with the Welsh for Jew, Homosexual, Gypsy, Jehovah's Witness and ... why not ... Englishman!

This is going to prove really useful. With the introduction of (UK) ID cards and iris checks the government can insist that certain services will be available ONLY to those who smile*. Grim-faced personages can be denied access to public buildings, transport and benefits. The government can then prove conclusively that we are much happier in a 24-hour surveillance society.

iPhone Killer isn't it?
I've had an iPhone for a couple of years and, for my use, wouldn't touch any other make. For me (stupid as I am) simplicity is the key. If there are any bugs I don't know about them because they've never affected me. I agree wholeheartedly with Ian Davies.
It seems to me that other manufacturers still haven't cottoned-on to what makes (for me and probably for most people) a good mobile phone ... it's the WAY it works. I hope other manufacturers do eventually make something with the ease of use of an iPhone because competition is good for the industry. But they haven't yet.

On behalf of the British Government, I would like to wish all EDS staff and management a very happy and prosperous New Year. We'll be sad to see them go. Who else can make such monumental cock-ups with a seemingly bottomless supply of taxpayers money. We'll have to find another company which shares EDS capabilities so, for our next database, we're thinking of giving the contract to Mr & Mrs Spigotty of Bromley ... they haven't got a computer, so are likely to be able to give the same level of service competence as EDS.

I was in Vienna last year and witnessed a whole posse of Seggies (about 15 of 'em) arrive at a tourist spot in the city by road. Presumably they are street-legal but almost more importantly they were quiet and well controlled by their tourist 'drivers' who, I'm sure, couldn't have had a great deal of training..

The Nokia's not even out yet and the iPhone has been out for two years.
Nokia, as with the other mobile manufacturers, is playing catchup. The iPhone remains the standard the others are aiming for and your sad 'journos' have to keen repeating the 'iPhone killer' type mantra.
I'm all for the competitors trying to out-do the iPhone but Apple will probably keep their offering ahead of the game.

Personally, if Steve Jobs vacates the show scene, I'll be disappointed. This is because, as Urs points out, he is a 'master showman'. His manner of presentation is excellent. Who knows, perhaps Phil Schiller may be an excellent presenter ... we'll see. What Jobs has done for Apple behind the scenes I don't know but as a front-man for the company he has been without parallel and I hope his brush with cancer is just that.
Say what you like about Jobsy and presentation, he's no Steve Ballmer (thank heavens!).

I look after six Macs in a small publishing house. I have done so for about twelve years. In that time we have NEVER missed a deadline or schedule, NEVER had to outsource and NEVER had to call in an "IT professional". We have NEVER had a computer fail. We have had to replace the occasional on-board battery and have sometimes fitted extra RAM.

This is what the geeklings and nerdbots don't understand. There are MILLIONS of people who don't care that the iPhone hasn't got a squillion megapixel camera, can't MMS, can't video etc., They want (and get with the iPhone) a gadget/phone which works with such fluidity and ease of use they don't have to turn to page 342 of the manual to find out how to join two calls together.
Call it all the names you want! It's good at what it claims to do.

Your question is not worthy of a reply.
My point is that these contributors try to sell us reasoned arguments and technical data about products. I can appreciate a good review of a product. Indeed, most of my purchases are based on the reviews of others. Myslewski can't make the argument without displaying prejudicial comments about others and that makes the rest of his piece unworthy of my reading. If he wants to slag off owners of iPhones, or any other device, ... fine ... I can cope with that, but not to then go on to state technical and purchasing advice.
I don't know whether the Apple headphones are good or crap. What I do know is that Myslewski can't tell me without prejudice.

As soon as I read "In a blow to those unfortunate iPhoneys" I knew to stop reading Myslewski's article. He could have given readers a technically brilliant piece on what was good and/or bad about Apples headphones ... instead, he chooses to expose his own prejudices and so, in my book, negates any pretence to journalism he may have.
I'll go elsewhere for a review of Apple's headphones. I prefer not to read articles by someone who, heaven forfend, might be termed a 'self-opinionated twat'. Not that I would use such terminology in public!
