IBM top brass accused again of using mainframes to prop up Watson, cloud sales

and the rest....

This was going on around 2013-2014.

I was in STG and a Z colleague mentioned he just had a bizarre call from WW wanting to know the Z deal he closed at one of the countries large banks.

When asked why, they person on the other end of the line mentioned that they were from the cloud team and wanted to count a very non-cloud mainframe deal as cloud.

I thought at the time this was somewhat smelly. Things just continued to get worse from there.

And the world moved on

I left 6 months ago after 8 years at IBM.

It simply doesn't know the world has moved on. Addicted to lumpy transaction revenue and lack of strategy in true aaS had left it increasingly irrelevant.

There is no msp strategy and the reseller channel continues to dry up.

Splitting the business is probably the only move, but it is most likely to late.

Masterstroke?

Basic SWOT analysis shows this is a great move. Neither Ginni nor Cook have made a big announcement in their CEO tenure that have taken the business in a new direction. If the execution is good, it could be big.

It also destabilizes the competition, Google and Microsoft partnering? Not ruddy likely.

I think this is a move IBM and Apple had to make.
