Stick your finger in another Pi: Titchy-puter now has touchscreen

ZSn

Pricey

I know that this may be sacrilege (and I have a number of raspberry pi's myself) but after adding the screen, SD card, pi etc, it's no cheaper than a low end tablet (and the tablet usually has a better screen). The raspberry pi is more flexible, no argument there, but the screen is a bit overpriced...

PDP 11

Reminds me of running an old PDP-11 in 1990 (it was attached to an even older pieces of important measuring equipment). It had airco fitted and that summer it promptly died. Apparently it wasn't rated for an outside air temperatue of more that 30C. Think about it - an airco where when the outside temperature is more than 30 it shuts down. It says something about old British summers that people thought that good enough...

Re: How much ?

Looking at the exploit market (there's a nice article on Bruce Schneier's blog today) it would be in the hundred of thousands of dollars at a guess. A exclusive 0-day for the desktop is about $100-$150k. A generic unpatchable flaw for a billion phones - well perhaps $1 million isn't too fanciful after all.

ZSn

Tightwads

$1,337, what a reward (apart from leet) for a bug that can affect a billion phones. What a bunch of tightwads!

ZSn

American

You forgot one vital thing - it was the only 'planet' found by an American. The most vocal critics of this decision are found in the USA. Chauvinism is alive and well in science the same as any other human endeavour.

The seasons and activity argument is frankly ridiculous, titan is bigger and also has weather - ideas it a planet as well?

Re: "approximation for the impact depth" is an approximation

I'm afraid you misunderstood the impact depth equation. It all depends upon momentum transfer. The momentum is transferred to whatever it is hitting (in this case the atmosphere, which is equivalent to about 10 metres of water). If it could push it aside then it wouldn't be applicable. Wikipedia actually does a resonable take:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_depth

ZSn

Re: Orbit?

No,Newton's approximation for the impact depth gives the lie to that. Unless it was at least 1.3 metres thick it would be stopped by the atmosphere; and that is ignoring heating effects.

ZSn

Unfair

While this is amusing I think this a tad unfair. Most people (obviously not those that read the register) think they know how to use a computer and clearly don't. In truth it's a bit like the medical profession - you take the pills and assume the quack knows what they're talking about. With the work laptop most people would assume that's it' secure.

It's a bit like driving - the vast majority of people think that they are above average, misunderstanding the word average obviously. Not me however, I even scare the locals in Brussels.

a quick peruse of the interwebs doesn't show how to get one if you're an old codger. It might be worth while connecting to a raspberry pi if it's a few quid, however how to buy one and how much it will be is anyone's guess. I'm sure that lots of kids will toss it into the corner once they get it, so it may pop up on a well known tat-selling site shortly afterwards.

Microsoft U-turns on 'free' Windows 10 upgrade promise for ALL previewers

ZSn

Re: Optimal?

I should have followed the link, it's fairly obvious there <sigh>:

This change is for the Windows Insider Program ONLY, and is specific to how we’re delivering the Insider Preview builds. Once available on July 29th, you do not need an MSA to upgrade Windows 10 on your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PCs if they are not receiving Insider Preview builds. You will not be required to use an MSA on new PCs that come with Windows 10 preinstalled or clean installed from media. Some features in Windows 10 do require an MSA to use, such as downloading apps in the Windows Store.

ZSn

Optimal?

What does this mean for the final version that you can only use the OS if you have an MSA? If so then, frankly, I prefer to stay on Vista. I'm not having all my data synched to the NSA courtesy of Microsof...

S/MIME

Yes, I go on about it, but the one thing that they haven't done is add S/MIME ability to the mail. The enterprise version works badly and the user version not at all.

I'm not downvoting them for this, because neither does stock android...

ZSn

Appily

Really, people go on about apps, but 99% are honestly uselss, they usually duplicate what can be done (albeit slower) in a web page, but with extra security failures thrown in for good measure.

Re: Que?

Actually to be embarrassed you only have to look closer to home – Ireland. Oliver Cromwell killed a very large number and the Irish potato famine (where food was being still exported out by the English) killed the rest it seems.

*Every* country has something to be ashamed of. Spain has Franco’s butchery and the new world, France has Algeria, Belgium has the Congo, etc. etc… Funny enough when you complain about it they find some justification (how the country was left in a better state after they bled it dry/killed them all), only Germany it seems had adequately live up to its past. Perhaps the other countries should as well.

I remember talking to an Austrian, very dapper in a cravat sipping wine in a pub, who said: ‘Austrians are very clever people, we’ve managed to convince the world that Mozart was an Austrian and Hitler was a German’.

not that bad

I drove this car as a hire car in Germany a few weeks ago and was quite impressed. Admittedly saying that it is an accountants car is true, but it did do cross country reasonably well and was stable at over 100 mph. Briefly (very briefly!) letting go of the steering wheel at that speed showed that it stayed true while still having a light touch around town. The automatic handbrake was better than anything else I had seen and I got 5 l/109 km (55 mpg) out of it.
