Facebook worth more than Portugal? Hell, it's worth a LOT more than THAT

Re: Wasting twice the time

I agree that the likelihood is that much of time spent on facebook has been appropriated from other leisure or low productivity time but there is also an argument that it has impacted on other areas of the economy by allowing free broadcast and communication technologies to the masses, thus eliminating the need for those service sectors.

One example is all those birthday wishes which many moons ago would have come in the form of a card, made by a stationary company, sold in a shop and delivered via a postal service now comes in the form of a wall post.

costly

All very well but I fear that usage by the masses will be limited due to fear of huge data bills.

I guess it'll come in handy in McDonalds once you log into the free wifi but "Big Mac" is the same in all languages isn't it?!

torrent

First off let me say I know nothing about what I'm about to suggest (so there is probably a good reason it hadn't been done).

Would it be possible to have the database or list of torrents as a torrent itself. Not sure how it would get updated or you would add a new item to it though. Some simple block chain maybe?

How do you switch DNS on a BT router? - they've locked it out!

Tactless and tacky

Come on author, not proof reading your articles is tactless and getting your interviewee's name wrong is just tacky.

Maybe you should have stuck to calling him Danny. ;)

alternatives

As many surveys have shown, if legal, easy and cheap alternatives are available then most people will use them.

The issue at the moment is that the content is relatively limited and mixed between providers and to get the best mix you'd end up spending a fortune on Netflix, NowTV/Sky, BlinkBox, Amazon Prime etc etc to get all the content you might want with lots of cross over between providers.

As for TV programmes, a 7 day catchup service is a bit crappy if you go on holiday for 2 weeks or don't realise that a new series has started and miss the first few.

All we ask is that we can watch what we want, when we want at a sensible price. Surely it can't be too hard to have a legit torrent service that can automatically add advertisement chunks based on some Google AdSense type process.

Re: Roku3

or you could save yourself £1.49 and sideload a build of the plex app onto the Roku (in dev mode).

That's what I've done with my NowTV box (basically a crippled Roku box) so at least I'm able to stream a bit more content other than Sky branded stuff.

As a first intro to streaming it's a great little box (picked up a 2nd one yesterday for £15 inc. 3 month sky entertainment pack) but when they die I will likely splash out and get a Roku or something that can get netflix etc.

roaming in the gloaming

I bet the cellular networks are hoping for a yes vote. They can then charge nice high roaming fees to English user's in Scotland and Scottish visitors to England.

Also, since Scotland won't initially be part of the EU then they can charge what they like without any silly EU regulations getting in the way.

I didn't think iTunes did albums..

I've yet to manage to iTunes to behave in a manner which matches my physical music collection. You know, sorted by artist, then album, then track sequence as decided by the artist/producer. And don't get me started on the shitty compilation smashing algorithm that distributes tracks across my hard drive in random locations only understandable by drugged up hipsters high on overpriced espresso.

I don't think I've claimed my "free" U2 album yet but there collection of tracks scattered in series of folders organised by 3rd backing vocalist and studio tea boy....

'Disruptive innovation' is nonsense? Not ALWAYS, actually

Any mouse Cow turd

You've already covered some of this...

Tim, you've already described how the disruptive innovation can only really get a foothold if the existing regulation (or lack of) allows. - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/05/15/worstall_wednesday/

So for the likes of Google to change the market with driverless cars the uphill struggle against current regulations will be immense and the incumbents will battle all the way. Your analogy to the automobiles vs trains of the late 1800's is a good one in that there wasn't much/any regulation and probably only applied to horse and carriage.

Not just compressed hours but also flexible hours. I have arranged to start work stupidly early so that I can finish early and collect the kids from school. My wife has done the opposite so she can start a bit later and take the kids to school. Minimises the need for expensive childcare.
