BT Sport takes Elemental step of software encoding

3D is dead. Glass to Glass 4K is here to stay. In the last 12 months in the UK the sales of 4K Ultra HD TVs have increased by 125% and are continuing to rise.

Big telco proxies go full crazy over cable box plan

Re: Won't someone think of the children!

I don't know about cable, but it's strange. In the UK, there is no "renting" of set top boxes as such. They are "free"....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virgin TiVo - rented. EE TV box - rented. Sky Q - rented. So not the case.

Budget UHD TVs arrive – but were the 4Kasts worth listening to?

"But, will fibre come anywhere close to being as practical as satellite delivery? I doubt it."

Its happening now, mate. I use IPTV over fibre to watch HD sport and the quality's stunning.

" I don't want to see any monolithic like US Cable Co's suddenly cropping up 'round me."

No, nor do I.

Visionman

"Where is the evidence that typical viewers (rather than technical enthusiasts) care about picture quality?"

Too true. Ofcom stats state that the majority of people, even those with HD TVs, don't actually watch the HD channels that are available to them. Which is somewhat contradictory to the forecast that 4K TV sales will increase by 147% in the UK over the next year, but is probably true. Bet they won't watch that either.

Facebook goes down, people dial 911

Re: What can I say?

"Further proof (if any was needed), that the majority of Facebook users are fucking idiots."

You are too kind.

BT consumer biz saves day: Grr, if it weren't for that meddling Ofcom

Scam?

Well 2.3m fibre users disagree with you. Infinity rocks and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

TalkTalk whips BT with riding crop over sport fibs in telly ad

Visionman

Thats about thirteen adverts in the last 12 mths the ASA has come down on. This BT one (plus 2 others). The last one was TalkTalk (plus 2 others), followed by Virgin Media (3) and Sky (4). Naughty boys...

Freeview's rumoured '£100m YouView killer' is real – and it's yet another digital TV thing

Visionman

The switching off of the terrestrial transmitters is some way off yet. But it may happen. And if it does, fibre will be everywhere by then.

Visionman

Freeview Connect is about the technical standardisation of Smart TVs. Nothing more, nothing less. And its a good idea actually. But its no more a YouView killer than I am.

Visionman

No

I wasn't aware signing up to either BT or TalkTalk was a requirement for getting a YouView box? I also wasn't aware one needed either BT or TT broadband to use one either.

Carry On YouView Regardless, BBC Trust tells the BBC

Visionman
Go

YouView was created as an alternative to full blown subscription TV services. Not as rich in content as Sky but richer than Freeview. Mind you that might be a good thing not bad, because the majority of channels available on Sky are complete and utter dross.
