You're correct, the timelapse camera (a CHDK-hacked Canon PowerShot) was mounted on a linear slide, in this case a 4' pro-grade model owned by our videographer, and for which a custom drive unit was designed and built. The speed was set to about 2.5 feet/hr for that shot.
Slides are getting easier to do, with several kit-based options for linear motion coming out from places like Servo City, and inexpensive Igus hardware (have one of those, too) that's not well suited for sliding full-motion video, but is good enough for timelapse.
