Google, YouTube ban election trolls ahead of US midterms

TheMole

Re: MAGA Republicans

"Evidence so far indicates that the Russians have been pouring money into far-right extremist groups in the West"

Indeed they have, they have also poured money into others such as BLM and far-left groups.

One might almost think they are trying to sow division in the West, however a quick glance down this thread's comments shows that they have failed miserably - nobody on either side of the political debate has taken the bait.

Failed insurrection aside, Biden is going to be president in two weeks. What does it mean for tech policy?

TheMole

Re: Rent a mob

Biden refused to condemn the BLM/Antifa riots that lead to over 30 deaths and thousands of businesses being looted and burnt. Whole city blocks raised.

Biden's VP even organised bail for the few rioters to actually be apprehended.

And before the TDS crowd pile on, criticism of Biden does NOT equate to support for Trump.

Jeff Bezos: I will depose King Trump

TheMole

Err... democracy ?

Am I the only one here uncomfortable that the world's richest man is trying to depose a democratically elected president because the president denied him the chance to become even richer ? Or is Bezos saying that AWS is so superior to the alternatives that it trumps democracy itself ?

The USA has a collegiate system and he won that, live with it, POTUS has a lot of executive power. Thats the point of having one. Elect a crap one and you have to accept the consequences for 4 years until you get to choose again. That's the downside to democracy but its a lot better than the alternatives.

Talk in Trump's tweets tells whether tale is true: Code can mostly spot Prez lies from wording

TheMole

Poacher turned Gamekeeper ?

"the researchers used a set of tweets from President Trump that had been fact checked by the Washington Post and could be characterized either as accurate or not. "

The Washington Post regularly prints misleading, slanted or even innacurate articles itself. So using them as the arbiter is kinda dumb.

Equality of outcome vs equality of opportunity

Seems to me you can only have one or the other, but not both.

Having largely (and rightly) won the battle for equality of opportunity, the progressives have changed approach and are now battling for equality of outcome.

Unfortunately this can only be achieved by abandoning equality of opportunity - if not enough representatives of group A are applying for posts, then to achieve equality of outcome (proportional representation), you must discriminate in favour of Group A applicants by awarding them jobs at the expense of better qualified non Group A candidates, or vice versa if too many group A candidates apply.

Equality of outcome necessitates discrimination.

Re: Reward the little guy

So shortsighted, I am amazed you can even see the keys on your keyboard.

The insane amounts of VC money going into Uber represents the belief that it will provide massive returns on that investment - which can only be achieved by monopoly dominance and subsequent massive price hikes. If they attain their goals, do you think anyone will be able to challenge them and reintroduce fair/fare competition, given their approach to the norms of business and the law itself ?

Each time you use them is another micro-boost towards monopoly dominance.

MET bullies

In 1986 I was stopped in my car and when I asked why, the answer was 'your car is registered in Tottenham and this is a nice area'. A thorough search of me and the vehicle ensued.

A few months later I was stopped and when a passenger asked why, he was pulled from the car, his arm twisted behind his back till he screamed and was told 'We're the fucking Met sonny, you don't mess with us', as three other officers looked on.

That was the 80's.

Fast forward to the 21st century and the Met has modernized itself and (unlike most state-run operations except GCHQ) realised the potential of technology, so no longer are they restricted to physically bullying individuals, they can now cyber-bully the whole nation with one click of a mouse.

That's progress !

S*** happens.

In ANY group of people there will be a number of total c***s. And if these c***s get their hand on levers of power (social, religious, political, cultural, whatever) very bad things will happen.

If the weak-willed and the misguided fall in line behind the c***s then exceedingly bad things will happen. One of the main problems with religion is that it demands that the weak and misguided fall in line.
