Boffins teach cars to listen for the sound of a wet road

Zog_but_not_the_first

Re: Hmmmm...

I read the article, but I concede that I may have read too much into it. The creeping development of certain systems in cars troubles me. Developments like ABS and traction control are excellent improvements and have saved lives, for sure, but other systems (e.g. "lane awareness") creep into an area where the driver is partially abdicated from the need to drive, but is still required to be in control of the car. In short, driving becomes more like a video game experience IMHO with an increasing disconnect from the real world where hard, sharp and rough things can injure you, your passengers, and other road and pavement users.

I'm not advocating a return to 1920s seat-of-the-pants driving (when motor fatalities were higher, I know) but I believe driver awareness and defensive driving techniques are a better way to proceed.

Perhaps he should have used some rolls of wallpaper. John Cleese and Connie Booth used this technique to write Fawlty Towers. Sketching out (literally) the plot strands on the paper meant that nothing was introduced without a resolution, and in the end everything (sort of) made sense.

When Citroën launched the DS it was revolutionary, jaw-dropingly different and slightly bonkers in a Gallic sort of way. It's a huge pity that car manufactures don't have the courage to try exciting new concepts like that any more. I know, I know: Accountants, financial expediency, global markets rule the game. All the games, actually which give us Hollywood films that "taste" like intellectual gruel.

Re: Don't just blame the alcohol

Makes you think.

It does indeed. A couple of months ago a newspaper published an article on the "alarming increase in alcohol-related liver disease" accompanied by an interesting graph. The graph showed a straight-line plot rising from around 1990 to 2012. Disappointingly there was no detailed discussion or analysis of the data, but I bet that women would be strongly represented as the impact of the "we can drink as much as men" and "shots culture" takes its toll.

BUT, behind the straight-line plot was a y=x2 curve of all liver disease, presented without comment. I'm wondering if your account throws some light on this.

Very unreasonable downvotes in response to an honest view. My experience is pretty much the same as yours - regular assessment but stumbling over issues that make the Linux experience less than the seamless transition many commentators would have you believe that it is.

I find Microsoft's recent change of tack into data mining etc., deeply troubling and I will probably leave them at some point when Windows 7 becomes unsustainable, but Linux isn't there yet. For me at least.
