NASA lights humongous rocket that goes nowhere ... until 2019

Brian Allan 1

"Working in conjunction with a pair of solid rocket boosters to produce up to eight million pounds of thrust"

With a good junk of the weight it has to push into space being the fuel required by these engines! Time to put gravitons work and simply cancel out gravity, i.e.: float into space and beyond!

Take that, gender pay gap! Atos to offshore hundreds of BBC roles

Brian Allan 1

I think the gender issue is being blown out of proportion. Companies simply look at the bottom line and decide where they can optimize expense vs. revenue, i.e.: the highest profit for shareholders. And the lowest (manpower) expense is definitely not going to be found in the UK!

Firefox doesn't need to be No 1 – and that's OK, 'cos it's falling off a cliff

Brian Allan 1

"Of course, as the ancient Betamax vs VHS format wars demonstrated, having a superior product does not translate to market share."

And we see how it ended for Betamax!

Google has name recognition, Firefox doesn't!!

Q. What's today's top language? A. Python... no, wait, Java... no, C

No need to be elitist...

When we said don't link to the article, Google, we meant DON'T LINK TO THE ARTICLE!

Brian Allan 1

Gotta side with Google on this one!

What a bunch of bullshit! There is no need for anything on the internet to be delinked. Google's approach is definitely a good one; screw German sensitivities on this issue.

Heathrow Airbus collision 'not a drone incident'

Brian Allan 1

'... a US study published in March claimed the risk from drones has been wildly exaggerated, with birds being a far greater menace."

Let's have the FAA institute strict regulations regarding where birds can fly and how high! Sounds about par for the course on stupid regulations!!

Distro watch for Ubuntu lovers: What's ahead in Linux land

Brian Allan 1

All too confusing!!

If it is too confusing for the pros to figure out, why in hell would the average person consider a Linux platform!? I'll stick with Window, thank you!

Having a monopoly on x86 chips and charging eyewatering prices really does pay off – Intel CEO

Brian Allan 1

I'll pay a higher price for quality and Intel chips have NEVER failed me, so $$$ for quality works in the marketplace. Of course having no real competition also helps Intel!

Will the MOAB (Mother Of all AdBlockers) finally kill advertising?

Brian Allan 1

A bit too thorough!

The blocker works very well... A bit too well, marking some web pages as totally advertising!!

Uber loses court fight over London drivers' English language tests

Brian Allan 1

No pass, no drive!!

"As The Register reported earlier this week, Uber’s lawyer Thomas de la Mare argued that about a third of the app’s 110,000 drivers would fail the £180-a-go English tests because it would be too difficult for them."

Pretty simple... No pass, no drive!!

User rats out IT team for playing games at work, gets them all fired

Brian Allan 1

You're darn right he was!

"So was Gordon right to rat out the IT team?"

Yes, he was right on the money!! They're paid to work NOT play games.

Uber: Please don't give our London drivers English tests. You can work out the reason why

Brian Allan 1

An excellent idea! English in the UK? Who would have thought...

"It argues that drivers need a basic knowledge of English for safety."

You darn right they do AND the ability to understand customers!!

HPE CEO Whitman says everything's 'on the right track' as sales are literally decimated

No super-kinky web smut please, we're British

Brian Allan 1

Sex; No! Violence; Yes! Weird!?

If it's legal between consenting adults, it should be viewable on DVD or internet.

I don't get the hangup on sexual content when you can view all the violence, mayhem and killing in movies, etc. Sex is much more pleasant!

Despite best efforts, fewer and fewer women are working in tech

Brian Allan 1

Have we ever considered that females might just be too smart to go into computer science!?

Basic income after automation? That’s not how capitalism works

Brian Allan 1

"No work, no pay!" In an AI future this will still apply, only then the individual without work will no longer be required, period...

Brian Allan 1

If those aliens are smart...

Those aliens have probably already looked at homo sapiens and decided they want ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with us! They'll keep really quiet!!

Facebook to forcefeed you web ads, whether you like it or not: Ad blocker? Get the Zuck out!

Brian Allan 1

Just Annoying

All internet adverts are just annoying. I seldom ever read them and have never clicked on one. Why bother?

Should we teach our kids how to program humanity out of existence?

Brian Allan 1

Gartner's hype cycle turned upside down to assess Brexit

Brian Allan 1

Re: Stages of grief

At least now the UK can do whatever they wish without EU intervention. A very good start!

Brian Allan 1

Brexit will ultimately be a very good thing for the UK! Just look at all the advantages of not having to follow the EU down the economic death spiral...

Tight-wad Apple repair techs swapped our damaged iGear with used kit – lawsuit

Refurbished is Normally Better than New

I've always found factory refurbished products to be as good as if not better than new out of the box products. Refurbished products are normally fully tested prior to being put back into the marketplace; whereas, new products are quite often only spot checked.

Alleged skipper of pirate site KickAss Torrents keel-hauled in Poland

Brian Allan 1

An Opportunity for the Next "Pirate Bay"

"Kickass rose to prominence after the scuppering of The Pirate Bay and attracted more than 50 million unique visitors a month."

This leaves a nice opening for some other enterprising group. As long as there is a demand, someone will step forward to fill the niche!

Beta Testing

"Musk said Tesla is employing "partial autonomy" now and promised it would improve its beta version until driverless cars were at least ten times safer than the US vehicle average."

In the software industry beta testers gets paid not killed! Driveless cars should maybe go back to the drawing board for a bit...?

UK employers still reluctant to hire recent CompSci grads

Brian Allan 1

Re: Reinvention

Addendum...

Think Assembler, Fortran, Cobol, QBasic, Pascal, Snowbol, Visual Basic, SymCon, ADA, Lisp, Visual J++, C, C++, C#, C.NET, VB.NET, Perl, Java, Javascript, Python, PHP, F# and almost every other language that was the fad at one time or another. And the list continues to grow...

Brian Allan 1

Reinvention

I've been a software designer/consultant for close to 50 years. As such I've had to reinvent myself about once very five years to stay current. The problem with new graduates is that it take about five years to gain reasonable software skills, and by then they are outdated and pretty much have to start over... It is a tough industry!

It's not our fault we don't hire black people, says Facebook

Brian Allan 1

You hire the person that is best for the job, regardless of color, religion, sexual orientation, hair style... Companies should never hire on a quota system; sure way to doom any company!

Fly to Africa. Survive helicopter death flight to oil rig. Do no work for three weeks. Repeat

Brian Allan 1

Sounds about right for work in Africa, although I'm surprised the equipment didn't go missing "somewhere", never to be found again (except maybe on the black market?).
