Surveillance forestalls more 'draconian' police powers – William Hague

g e

Re: "Lord" Hague

Instead of 'Privacy and Security' I wish they'd just call a spade a spade and say 'Privacy and Knowing everything about you whenever they want'

Security isn't about being able to read people's data, ironically in a digital context it's actually about preventing people reading your data and getting access to your stuff.

Brexiteering

I notice next to no one is telling people to vote 'stay' ... perhaps because it's such an obvious choice.

Meanwhile Brexiteers seem to becoming increasingly shrill and desperate. Empty vessels making the most noise, perhaps.

Mars One puts 100 Red Planet corpses colonists through fresh tests

g e

How's it funded, though

If it's reality TV then ultimately there's some seed funding and then advertising sales are supposed to fund it (make profit)? (Unless I missed something)

So presumably, if the popularity of the show wanes and advertisers place their ads elsewhere then the colonists die from starvation or some other lack of supplies?

Can't see it ever working, even if the selectees don't kill each other enroute to Mars.

Software snafu let EU citizens get referendum vote, says Electoral Commission

g e

Re: damn

I do wonder that if EU nations were given a referendum on whether or not to kick UK out...

We're like the dirty little cultureless Americanised blot on the backside of of a bunch of otherwise quite interesting nations. Can't say I'd blame them for voting 'Punt-UK', personally, if given the chance.

Shame, really, we used to be quite good here once upon a time.

UK Home Office is creating mega database by stitching together ALL its gov records

g e

Not forgetting...

Good luck getting them to expire data from various sources within the regulations laid down for those datasets to be expunged.

Of course, expect summarised and recombined datasets derived FROM said time-limited datasets to be kept under different rules for far longer, too.

Your files are still where you left them

Was the message my laptop displayed to me over the weekend. Needless to say I shut it down immediately and used the other (Linux) laptop to Google for what the virus was I'd somehow installed.

Turns out the virus was called Windows 10 and this was a 'normal' update message from it upon unsleeping, having downloaded some updatey crud...

Utter wankery.

g e

"traffic would go to the infringer’s site"

Errrm that implies a couple of things surely...

1. Google isn't the infringer

2. The infringer can easily be found and presumably fined, hence revenue

Perhaps I misunderstood something there but it sounds like a cheap temp could google for stuff and find many 'infringers' for pursual each day.

Re: So funny :-)

Strangely enough I just paid £263 for my insurance elsewhere when Tesco decided my renewal would be £530 instead of £370 due to an address change (to a 'nicer' area, too). Got the price from the opera-singing-now-robot company.

Which I consider pretty reasonable for fully comp with PNCD and legal for an XKR (hence why I don't want an acceleration/braking/cornering e-nanny).

When an insurance co puts their prices to silly levels I just assume it's cos they no longer want to cover your demographic any more, having focussed on a more 'profitable' one for that year. It all seems like a mahoosive scam anyway, imho, I'm sure these buggers all cahoot and collude together.

Even if it doesn't spaff all my data to some damned cloud I don't want a bot telling me it doesn't like my driving 'style' - the ruddy in-car camera is bad enough beeping at me when I go round corners too fast 'enthusiastically' (as I believe BMW handbooks call it).
