So what's in the new Windows Insider build? Bug fixes, an AR goof-around, and a font

Luke Worm

What? No new emojis? I thought that was an integral part of an operating system update nowadays

Official: America auto-scanned visitors' social media profiles. Also: It didn't work properly

Luke Worm

No, it can even make you president.

Don't worry about Privacy Shield, it's fine. Really. I promise, says US trade watchdog head

Re: Political theatre

Unfortunately you are right @ratfox. Theatre indeed, tragedy and farce simultaneously :-(

Comcast lied and now it must STFU: Its cable broadband is not 'the fastest' in the US

If you ask Trump, he would say it could be true.

Re: Whoever writes these titles

Totally agree! Especially this one was excellent!

We live in a world where a 'Hamdog' burger hybrid is patented

Luke Worm

News?

Apparently this patent was granted in 2009, seven years ago. Why is it news now?

UK gov says new Home Sec will have powers to ban end-to-end encryption

Luke Worm

Domestic?

"This power, if applied, would be imposed upon domestic CSPs by the new Home Secretary"

_domestic_ :-)

It just applies to the UK part of the internet. How intelligent!

How innocent people 'of no security interest' are mere keystrokes away in UK's spy databases

Dynamics

"The way things are supposed to work is that we're supposed to know virtually everything about what [government officials] do: that's why they are called public servants.

They are supposed to know virtually nothing about what we do: that's why we are called private individuals.

This dynamic - the hallmark of healthy and free society - has been radically reversed. Now, they know everything about what we do, and are constantly building systems to know more. Meanwhile, we know less and less about what they do, as they build walls of secrecy behind which they function. That's the imbalance that needs to come to an end. No democracy can be healthy and functional if the most consequential acts of those who wield political power are completely unknown to those to whom they are supposed to be accountable."

French parliament votes to jail tech execs who refuse to decrypt data

History

Use of encryption, such as PGP, was completely forbidden in France until 1996. Only in 2004 did use of encryption become totally allowed.

Aah, the always underestimated costs of failures in Design and Quality Control.

Most of the world still dependent on cash

Luke Worm

Yes, negative interest rates is one thing, transaction fees are the next. And then the government wants to tax every transaction. Without cash there is no escape, except: moving savings to another country, another currency, gold, silver. Of course, in such cases the government would impose an "exit tax".

Everything is recorded by VISA, your bank, Apple, Google, Facebook and others. All of course in the interest of a greater good (for others).

Lawful and lawless

OK, so the police is off the hook because they followed the law. But the government/parliament need to redo their work because the law is unlawful (is that a word?).

What America's drone owner database could look like in future

Luke Worm

It’s like you must register your car but you don’t need a driver’s license to use it. Just click “Agree” on the screen (like for software licenses), put a sticker on your drone and off you go.

Encrypt voice calls, says GCHQ's CESG team ... using CESG encryption

Luke Worm

Lawful interception?

How wide is the jurisdiction of this "lawfulness"? John in London and Tom in Leeds use encrypted communication service (VOIP or messaging) provided by an entity abroad, in Iceland or Switzerland for example; an entity that has no physical presence in the UK.

UK watchdog offers 'safe harbor' advice on US data transfers

Luke Worm

And within EU?

Not much has been written about data transfers within EU. Are the laws and regulations in the UK, for example, safe enough for data transferred from Germany ?

"The court ruled that because of permissive legislation in the USA, and the PRISM programme, Europeans couldn’t be ensured that their data was safe once transferred outside the EU".

With the same logic, can data even be safely transferred to the UK (GCHQ) ?

Safe Harbour ruled INVALID: Facebook 'n' pals' data slurp at risk
