150,000 lost UK police records looking more like 400,000 as Home Office continues to blame 'human error'

Well I hope you never look after a system I rely on! Mirroring is absolutely NOT the same as a backup. Mirroring means that mistakes are replicated over; there is a distinct differences between disaster recovery and backups.

Re: The £6M Question

Are you serious?

Have you seen the quality of the IT teams in hospitals and universities. Have you seen the software that they produce? I can only believe that you are from this sphere if you feel a massive ERP system is best built from scratch by bunch of public sector IT workers and university teams.

Beggars belief.

Well it's a browser, so being online is kind of the point.

Do Microsoft owe me anything?!

Do Microsoft owe me anything?!

I'm literally so frustrated I thought I'd reach out to the The Register's Great Unwashed and see what people think.

I have a £2.5k Surface Book 2 with two docks, pen, etc. Easily £3k all in. Their latest firmware update to the dock means that when I try and use a USB headset the microphone has issues all the time. I've tried 4 mics and 3 docks and am 100% sure it's the dock update as the dock that was on the previous version was the only that was fine until I updated it. With the update I regularly get the message "Your device is causing poor audio quality".

The big question is that now the device is unfit for purpose, do you think MS should offer some level of compensation? I can't Skype without disconnecting everything and running off a single screen laptop (and I'm constantly in and out of Skype calls)!

I'm trying to work out whether I just have to deal with it and (likely) buy a bluetooth headset and hope that doesn't suffer the same fate, or try and escalate within MS and get them to provide an update or provide me with a voucher / credit so that I can get a bluetooth headset.

Any thoughts?

Click Bait

Honestly, I love the Reg but this is just click bait nonsense. The standard client is secure, clipboard sharing is optional, the attack is server > client and some naff third party tools are cited on different operating systems.

El Reg, we expect better!

Anti-missile missile at home?

I was just thinking the other day, does the UK actually have any land-based anti-missile capabilities? I see all sorts of modern militaries sporting them on their soil, but as far as I'm aware we only have navy-based anti-missile capabilities.

$329 for a MacBook? Well, really a 'HacBook' built on an old HP

I'm not sure that you should be taken seriously anymore either. You are talking about a machine from 8 years ago. Who on earth expects that to offer anything now? You can't really upgrade the GPU (or CPU) in almost all laptops.

If you want an upgrade path buy a desktop. End of.

I always thought this might be the case!

You use VPN software for legitimate security reasons (or just to stream films from services not available in your country) and then you're immediately on someone's radar!

Totally agree with all your points. Both those issues annoy the &%^% out of me.

Re: Undecided as yet

It's the camera and microphone that's killing me. Taking a picture of a moving object (even very slowly moving) produces bad results and the microphone on video capture is abysmal.

I find the earpiece speaker pretty poor too. I love the feel of the phone and the way it hangs together, but the camera and call features (pretty core features!!!!) are well below par.
