This is not good...

Now when I reach for my iDevice every 80 seconds to check the news over the weekend I can feed my news addiction with my favorite news source. My wife will leave me. My kids will end up junkies. My dog will run away. My pickup truck will run out of gas idling for hours.

Network Routing

Working in telecom for many years I have encountered requirements to find a shortest path route through a network. I always responded with pointers to literature and proposed that given the hard real-time requirements we compute the best solution in the time allocated. This gives good results without introducing the highly undesirable variation in the time to process requests.
