Nuclear-powered datacenters: What could go wrong?

When was the Last Time a Solar Panel or Wind Turbine Exploded & Wipe out 20 Square Kilometers ?, If your DATA requires that Level of Storage & RISK Management why keep it in a Possible Toxic Bomb ? Why is this being Discussed ? BECAUSE Wind & Solar are getting all the Money, even if Wind could keep Batteries to run the Place charged, for maintenance Costs, as they prefer for People to be relied on their Waste Disposal Contracts as Well, Unless we want to see more of Private Companies Handling of Nuclear Reactors in America ..

Re: Consumer hardware

This is just a theory, but, if as a example, Local Cattle Station wanted to run a ISP on a Remote Homestead to allow all the Workers there to use that as their Satelite/Landline/Cable connection point to Internet, on their own VPN Server, it would appear if that Data was going to 1 user, depending on set-up of Network ?

Ummm, I am using a Commodore 1084s Monitor, here, still, the Push Button, Power switch on back of unit died years ago, if I need to turn it on, I jam a split matchstick in side of switch mechanism, to hold button in, it's been running like that for a least 15 years ...

Australians! Let us all rise up against data retention

@ Anonymous Coward

Very True, but I think Micheal Moore has said it all in B4C ... Nobody listened ..

or maybe we hide in tech, maybe everybody hangs a old wireless modem out window & we create a open "onion-tor" wireless network, see's all, remember's nothing, but links wireless modems that share network, that if enough Australian's "hang a modem out window", (wonder if you can get a solar panel/battery kit for that?), that could spread over country-side, distributing shared files, maybe even use a clod drive to view it's shares database ? A few VPN access point's to internet & it could grow, Maybe ...

Super SSD tech: Fancy a bonkers 8TB all-flash PC?

As a Great Grand Dad, with many computer literate "underlings" , I HAVE to agreed, people who "think" there storage is adequate, hasn't used it ...., Know this since beginning of HTML & PDF, & mainly postscript showing how much memory is required (depend on resolution), & in 43 years computers have taught me numbers only go UP, not Down !!!

Re: Compare these to the 20MB MFM drives of not so long ago!

As somebody who has formatted & used MFM 20 meg drives, I payed $1495.00 a pop for 4, back in day of twin floppys & 640K & dip switches ....

But last year I bought a Samsung 512GB 840 pro, great drive, nice and "slippery" cost $550.00 ...

I like Flash drives, I love 8TB SSD's & HDD's, but even if tomorrow I could a 10 PB SSD, I would still have a 500GB as boot, so big drive would be just a storage unit. The 500gb can be partitioned to contain VirtMem, OS & Apps, Backup & OS Recovery, I prefer if only the boot drive gets worked & fragged by OS, and Other BIG Drives by Me, when I want to access files ...

Some use the HDD as backup, I am about to replace 2, 2TB drives in main system, both @ 99% Capacity, with 4TB drive's, the 2, 2TB will go the shelf, as the backup to new drives once backup has been achieved, they will gather dust (in plastic box) with the original backup 1TB's & "those that came before it". So any "retrieval" is plugging a HHD in, this of course, can gather speed over time, & so I have a 80 litre plastic tub full of previous HDD ...

However I think SSD is next cab on rank as far as HDD goes, 8TB? Nova-chips 8TB's sound fine but, cost is always issue. As I know 4TB all flash PCI card based are still around $20000, always things evolve, but a permanent solution is still ahead ...

Re: Keep Making the Same Mistakes

Al Black

you barked at wrong person ...

1 ) Bullshit, Because personal greed is American Mantra, doesn't make it Australian, it is America's corporate greed that we have most of these problems, we have already seen Water & Electricity distribution systems crash from lack of upkeep, here & NZ, I remember when Public Service was a honour, not a Career move, but if they are paid as "executives", except they can't run anything these days, and just sell it off to their friends, who miraculously can make it profit ....

2) Yes we can, all the way to Menzies & "pig iron bob" & their ilk, Tony is a "pommy" because he wants to return us to the "Menzies" era, where the queen is boss, & he gets pretty jewelry to wear, like the pounce he is ...

3) It wasn't hate, it was the truth, glad you idiots can't see it, it may be kinder that way. Governments can't keep hacking @ disabled, pensioners & parents, while taxing the shit out their kids, propping up profits & banks for failing economies, and expect people to be happy, I have heard some nasty crap about government needing to be changed, from Salvation Army Officers, so it is more than just noisy minions ...

Re: Keep Making the Same Mistakes

? The monopoly, where profits came back into publics coffers, not a private individuals pockets, When the phones(elec/water) where cheaper before they started selling it off to their corporate buddies ? How many have noticed, how infrastructure cost are cheaper when things are "privatised", What a load of crap, everything costs way more, and underlying infrastructure gets NO upkeep till it falls over, & then they call for government to do repairs, & if your a "privatised" bank, all sin's are forgiven from public purse ..

Tony is a pommy, born in London, only interested in getting a gong, (first thing he did as PM, bring back Knighthoods), he & his associates are destroying strip mining Australia, selling it's assets & infrastructure to oversea's "investors" ..

I am old & broken, I cannot do much, but I notice the "younger types" are really not happy either, from some of convo's & "speeches" you hear in Pubs & Clubs & around Western Sydney, I believe they have a chance to be, deservingly so, Australia's first assassinated politicians, ordinary people are getting angry, as politicians look after their & friends business interest's, not the Australian People or it's economy ...

Re: Would you Future-proof a PC?

I wonder how robots, Drones, AI Cars, are going to use to communicate VAST amounts of DATA that they need too, to work .....

Re: All your data subject to US courts?

Nice of NSA to leave cloud untouched ....

With MS's security problems in "house of cards" OS, how can people believe that this time it's secure ...?

Re: I Use The Cloud - My Cloud

Yeah, i seems that modern routers with a USB port, can add a EXT HDD or 64/128gb flash drive, enough cloudiness for me ...

Things I also consider a issue ..

1) if MS has a update to it's lineup, and you don't, will it still let you access, what happens if your MS "investment" out of service life ?

2) If everybody's DATA is on cloud, who backs it up ?

3) when/If they announce any costs for a year, or "bundle it" with windows, with extra for premium service, it would still be probably cheaper to buy 2 Ext USB drives and use them as mirrored storage ...

4) If Microsoft Clod Drive gets hacked, and ALL your DATA die's or is stolen, are they responsible enough legally to sue ...?

Why go to trouble of securing your system, then live it in a online clod drive, for anyone with a lockpick to play with, whenever they want !!

With Microsoft's bug record, Azurb clod drives are/will be a security nightmare ..

Re: @Nigel Whitfield -- As soon as I get home ...

About 6 months ago, I given a lend of a 3d printer to evaluate for somebody, one of the "tests" I did, was throwing a scan (after gimping) of my friends wedding certificate and PRINTING it ( I was attending his Anniversary) , it came out as a a flat slab with raised letters/graphics, it may be able to "Gestetner" off a few copies, but took "forever" to print, and turning a cabinet of file into these, would be a institutional effort (madhouse), not to mention space they would take up ...

Re: but the '...w.dll'

Alan Brown

All true, I am still running Debian on Amiga 2000/060, 128mg ram, it's .iso is about 2.8 meg (OS only), however, I think giving the game anyway is a mistake, I was looking at updating old Concurrent DOS, as a plaything, less than 500kb, install... Tinycore can be nailed down a lot, 8 meg core, 12 meg with apps, is the way it comes from "factory", but it is Linux, cull, install, set it up to do what you want ... The original Amiga OS could run multitasking OS in about 1meg, so it is possible ..

Re: Side note for international viewers

All our governments are helping to funnel money into rich's pockets, we are still dealing with Howards Crap, let alone Labour, to think this is new is strange .....

PS : Fairfax Media, I haven't read a newspaper or watched TV in 20 years, the only reason "papers" appear in any search is online comments, like here, if you don't like comments from "the mass's", maybe you can get Abbott to pass a law saying, only people with $1,000,000.00 in Assets can use it, then everybody making comments, would be so far up their own arse, they would all agree with you ...

At least Spartacus could see his chains, we have little bits of paper keeping us working ..

Chrome is a rehash of Chromium on Linux, So no chrome, a cheap copy is not required, IE died a long time ago here, but firefox/thunderbird is still my favourite combo ....

Maybe it was about old punch cards, you have to punch code into paper to run programme ( I have the IBM Manuals for most Punch Card Units here), and old "control panels" where a little bunch of holes that you moved wire links from 1 hole to another, with multiple wires, setting machine up for different tasks, so maybe that's the coding they are talking about ..

Australia to get spooks charter at cost of at least AU$188m

This is why they sold off the PMG, so lots of little holes to plugged with public money, into their friends pockets, so to get back the DATA they would have access too in first place, A IP is no different to a Phone Number, and should be so, if somebody got up to no good on a phone, it would be traced ...

If they could have kept it that simple, we wouldn't be dealing with this crap, except there's money to be paid out this way ..

NBN Co says TWO broadband connections are better than one

Re: Yeah... weird

Yes but possible, even just using Internet Connection Sharing in Windows OS, a trick in dial-up days was to combine multiple lines to increase speed, I could ramble on but, here's the pretty version, http://www.wikihow.com/Combine-Two-Internet-Connections

This "should" work with with say a NBN Fibre connection & a ADSL2 line & a mobile phones Hotspot WiFi, as well ...

But I can't see why home users, or SOHO would require it, you would really need to be shifting LOTS of Data Quickly to need more than NBN Fibre can provide or Maybe stuck with low speed ISP with low connection rates, so by combining them get the transfer rate you need ...

It's not just the "Internet" that needs these high connection rates, robotics telemetry data, Visual Data, Audio Data, Sensor Data, all take bandwidth, and communication & data transfer between "system's" that Control Driverless cars, Drones etc, it's about getting things real-time as well ...

HAWKING ALERT: Leave planet Earth, find a new home. Stupid humans

Re: *sigh*

Build a scale model, I thought of using a mobile or 2, as communications link to control a craft, mine was gunna have some tye-dyed mice with sunglasses, in cockpit, so I when I buzzed the ISS, I could give them "beware puny humans !!", some led as lasers, maybe cruel for mice, if ISS beliefs it ..

I liked the "craft" in "after earth", it construction was along lines I understand (except I think I have better "caravan" airlocks), knowing weight in largest problem, I think by centralising crew for takeoff in separate life supported area, thru using environmental controls, to change atmosphere the rest of ship, with some lighter than air gas, heating it (to increase lift), using rest of "ships inner hull" space as a "blimp" to achieve a high altitude, before having to give "a push" to orbit it, of course this would temp control of gases, ventilation to storage or to be BURNT as fuel or kept to make water, if you use hydrogen, not helium, & have storage of Air to refill ships inner hull after orbiting ...

"The main problem is I'd never get clearance to launch something this experimental."

Well of course I went to bunnings (hardware store), they told me I wasn't even allowed to build it the carpark, either, So lot's of luck with that ..

& Please don't mention Hindenburg, that was a lesson in don't paint your airship with solid rocket booster fuel ...

Re: But...

Like the people who where hauled before courts over this ? All "innocent" but subjected to months of wrongful accusations & imprisonment, CAUSED by the holes in windows & other OS, So If law enforcement can't be sure of where it was coming from then, now with new "admissions" regarding NSA etc, how can traditional forensic methods still apply to this virus infected windows & OSX ?

With currently infected routers, especially any embedded gizmotron, NBN gateways not receiving a patch in 6-7 months that I have had one, and my home routers have had 1 each, these are the backdoors that crooks ALSO use ....
