Facebook VERY SLOWLY rolls out Timeline

Levente Szileszky
FAIL

RE: re:anyone actually like timeline?

"It's very similar to MS and the Ribbon, or Nintendo going for motion controllers on the Wii."

Except it's not, it's totally different - both examples are dead wrong: MSO still works without Ribbon (shortcuts, menus etc) and Nintendo's Wii Motion was a resounding, overwhelming success.

FB Timeline pretty much sucks, whoever approved this junk he must be a complete idiot and there's no way around this PoC and so far everybody hates it.

BTW I'm more than convinced it's nothing but another try to grab your info without your consent, see my post below where I argue that it's now really time to hit FB with a huge fine...

Levente Szileszky
Stop

Time to actually FINE (yes, as in BIG MONEY) Facebook and this freak Sugarhill...

...I mean Zuckerberg; seriously.

Timeline is EXACTLY the thing the FTC was warning against, jmust about a month ago: using *my* information without *my* consent.

In essence even if you limited all your info to your Friends it will be still broadcasted to the whole world via your friends' Timeline if they do not limit everything the same way you do (Friends only).

Conversely the only way to prevent this insanity is to get ALL your friends to change their privacy settings to "Friends" only (or even more restricted if they have custom lists)...

...good luck with that.

Zuckerhill knows this very well, the whole Timeline was designed to be unavoidable; this is a truly cynical and arrogant kick into the face of every privacy rules, the FTC etc - a classic scumbag FB move, indeed.

Isn't it time to actually FINE FACEBOOK/Sugarberg and by that I mean REAL FINE, an amount that stings, painfully (eg a dollar per US user) so they will remember not to screw around anymore? I think so...

Windows 8 to get self-healing 'Storage Spaces'

Levente Szileszky

If you keep your Windows desktop running 24/7 then...

... it's OK, they just added a feature others already have.

But if you like me, prefer to use your nice, fast machine to _do_ things, perform tasks etc and keep your inactive files on a small RAID5-RAID6 NAS box that's big and can handle all sorts of other things 24/7 while running noiseless, tucked away in your house, well, then it's not for you, I mean not for us. :)

Kodak heading to Chapter 11

Their inkjet & multi-function driver software is very nice...

...as I just learned recently when I installed it for a friend.

Otherwise it's all very true - sad but true. Kodak's management completely f'd up everything, investors should sue the entire management.

I still hope some takeover & a new, *competent* mgmt will resuscitate Kodak in one form or the other...

Samsung Ultrabook specced up by retailer

Levente Szileszky

So it's OK on thickness, has a small, low-resolution screen and very slow CPU?

I thought Ultrabooks supposed to be speedy but very thin, lightweight with higher resolution displays and good thermal envelope in return for putting up with that PoS Intel integrated graphics.

This must be some Samsung "For Profit" Ultrabook version: very slow processor, shitty display resolution on a small screen and a (hybrid but still) spinning disk for storage?

Oh yes, it's thin, I guess.

Samsung, for comparison's sake take a look at this non-Ultrabook Vaio: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCTOProcess?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&LBomId=8198552921666377664&categoryId=8198552921644768015

Yes, for the same price it comes with a decent CPU, 1600x900, switchable Radeon HD6630 1GB and Intel junk (WiDi-enabled), fingerprint reader

Iron digi-curtain: Belarus nationalises internet

There's an upside: this moustached idiot dictator and his regime is literally on the brink of...

...bankruptcy: their foreign currency reserves by late Fall depleted to $2-3B and that's already including the money they "borrowed" from their few 'commercial' banks (the "Fed" only held a billion or so.)

Inflation is around 300-400%, everybody relies on the state stipend but the regime is only raising salaries by 20-30%: http://news.belta.by/en/main_news?id=670329

Simply there's no money to pay the bills and goods are becoming more and more scarce

IMF already said no, no more help unless they start changing the system.

Now all they are left with is Russia's debatable willingness to prop up the regime any further - not like Putin is without problems, ahem - and even tighter control of the flow of information aka this new law.

It's impossible to run a country like that for long, I think it's time to prepare for the fall of this ugly-looking Stalinist clown called Lukashenko, 2012 will finally bring this idiot down - good riddance; I hope his people will get the chance to put this scumbag on trial...

What a thinly veiled load of MS PR BS

Seriously...

"How are they different? How are their busines practices *any* different from the Microsoft of old? Sure they dress differently, but it's the same beast underneath those clothes - they are company's who are out to profit from you, just like all the others."

PLEAHHHSE. Your rather pathetic attempt to paint it as if we are against companies making profit is literally insulting - do you think anyone buys your stupid PR BS?

And in case you are indeed mentally challenged here's a hint: no, Google is absolutely NOT like Microsoft, old or new. And the difference is exactly what everybody says here: the shady, illegal business practices, the utter lack of innovation (forget inventing) and the stupid, dumb, Ballmer-like bureaucratic approach.

Google is nothing like that; not perfect but far from this shady, lousy behemoth, run buy disgusting office fatties like MS.

I said the same thing on day one, it's only about...

...one final target: to simply pick up Nokia's very effective hardware mfr'ing and distribution operations for Ballmer's ashtray change (yeah, I know, the angry bald fat beancounter fart does not smoke.)

If in the meantime they manage to buy market share, so be it... but at the end it's all about Microkia, nothing else.

RE: Farewell...

I always said Nokia should have bought WebOS - a match made in heaven, provided they fired those sorry@ss incompetent managers who let 4000-5000 devs sitting on their project 2-3 longer than planned.

But then again, WQebOS went to HP where a glorified software sales guy , after being kicked out of his previous job, has failed to recognize the point in the mobile market and with one master announcement almost sank the ship. And this is where we are done with our full circle: it was quite similarl to Nokia's ex-MS Trojan horse beancounter-in-chief Elop who wiped out over one-third of Nokia in few days, writing down its entire IP in Symbian and linux.

Amazon preps major update for Kindle Fire UI

Levente Szileszky
Alert

It's one thing the browser is pretty slow when...

...their server-side caching/proxy is enabled because once you disable it and set all plugins to on-demand loading it's pretty swell. OTOH I have installed the latest Opera Mobile on my Fire and it's a LOT faster than anything I've seen before (using Opera's server-side caching.)

But I have bigger issues, all without workaround so far:

- WiFi is still a weird thing: every time when we pick up the tablet after some time sitting there unused, when we turn back the LCD there's no wifi connection. Maybe it is by design - saving power - but I tried to find an option to disable this but so far nothing works.

- The home page recent list is a graphical mess as far as icon size etc go; I don't often say this but aside of the many negative, awful approach they made this is where Apple always excel, the consistent visuals of the UI which makes powerful impression.

- Sound is very puny and needs to be louder; other than my quiet living room it's useless eg I couldn't hear a thing from any dialog in a movie when tried in a regular, chatty office environment.

- TASK MANAGER! WHen enabled and unlocked press-and-hold on the button should give us a menu (a' la Gingerbread), one menu option launching a list of running apps/tasks so we can SWITCH between tasks/apps!

- The apparent locking Fire to Amazon's App Store does not bother me but I don't want to see it happening the other way around, Mr Bezos: don't even think about my Amazon App Store apps disappearing from my Arc... such a move would immediately prompt me to abandon your ship. Just sayin'.

""Also," he added, "many are not happy with the complexity of Android and the lack of security.""

HP throws WebOS to open source community

Levente Szileszky

Are we talking about the same TouchPad?

I am an avid Android user but I never bought an Android tablet (sans my Kindle Fire which is nothing but a media-consuming/shopping etc device for my wife and daughter) but I did pick up few TouchPads during the fire sale and hell, yes, it's a LOT nicer than Android, browsing is smoother and overall the UI mops the floor with Android.

Complaining about lack of apps clearly shows you don't have a clue about tablets, let alone that this iPad-induced idiocy of paying for apps, only to use the same resources you can use for FREE on the internet in any other OS, should die quickly.

Lack of options? You mean like by default, out of the box you can enter a public code and voila', you are root?

“The answer to that is yes but what I can't tell you is whether that will be in 2012 or not. But we will use webOS in new hardware, but it's just going to take us a little longer to reorganize the team in a quite different direction than we've been taking it in the past.”

Technology v support: Amazon's premium challenge

Thumb Up

6+ years customer here and still enjoying Rackspace support...

Aye, two Anonymous Coward monkeys: one is still angry because he didn't get a job at Rackspace and the other one trash-talks about Rackspace's excellent support, without any facts...

...I guess Rackspace has nothing to fear, competition seems to be pretty desperate.

On a more serious note:

"Engates made it clear that his company's commitment to "fanatical support" is just as relevant in the cloud age as in yesterday's hosting market, and will continue to win Rackspace customers against Amazon's more impersonal approach."

As someone using Rackspace for 6 or more years I wholeheartedly agree with this; their top-notch support is why I stick to my Rackspace guns whenever annual renewal comes up.

Their response time to online tickets may vary from minutes up to an hour (off-hours) but you should just call in: phone support is *ALWAYS* amazing and 24/7/365 they always have all types of experts available. For simpler issues the best approach is open a ticket then call in; you'll get immediate response and don't have to explain anything, for more complex ones just call in and that's it..

Even if we forget the cost-savings with Rackspace vs having your own, decent-sized and well-trained internal staff you still won't have *ALL* the experts you will need down the line, I can almost guarantee that. And when you're in the ditch it can make or break your business how fast you can react, y'know.

You really don't understand the story - there's no need to break anything because you can BUILD an HDCP stripper ever since HDCP was introduced to the market; it's a built-in feature, disabling enforcement and it's almost impossible to trace back individual licensees and then revoke their license.

It's a completely stupid, pointless and utterly broken system, just like everything our super-stupid, uber-ignorant, royally clueless fat parasites in Hollywood endorse.

It's a decent revenue stream for Intel and an every day annoyance for all the rest, that's all.

Really, Carmack, in 2011?

Aside of the fact that despite their "uniquely textured world" Rage does not even look as good as, say, Battlefield 3 (and that GPU rendering is probably much more of a bottleneck than this texture (de)compression) iD makes the most boring corridor-style shooters in the world - it's better to think of them as tech demos for their engines...

...so I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that I cannot recall any 3rd party licensing any of their engines for at least 5-6 years now - they are usually sort of unfinished/poorly balanced game engines: always have nice, shiny parts but always at a price of some serious tradeoff.

This was clearly manifested on their sheets when couple of years ago financials forced them to sell the company (iD) to the owners of Bethesda (Fallout- and Elder Scroll-series) as I recall.

Intel really needs to leave 2000 behind, it's 2011 - someone needs to tell their PR dept that people stopped playing Q3 a loooong time ago and Rage will not win awards with its piss-poor sales on PC either.

Wait, what?

"In other words, if you can save $10/drive by waiting 90 days to buy it JIT and you move a million drives, that's 10 million dollars you didn't have as a cost. That's also not including the interest you could save/earn (depending on your books) by keeping that cash on hand instead of tied up in stock."

So FYI even $1M-$2M Netapp or EMC systems can come as little as ~150 drives plus SSDs - let's make it 200 pcs total, OK? And let's lower the price to like $500k-$1M, OK?

So your awesome business advice says let's save $1500 on $500k-$1M and up systems and risk not being able to sell anything due to a shortage of drives?

If so then you have one weird logic, Sir - I hope you are not running a business...

To sum it up shortly: by NOT having drives ready and NOT selling aforementioned storage systems with one million drives due to lack of drives will inflict HUNDREDS OF TIMES BIGGER LOSSES IN REVENUES hence it's a stupid argument, I think.

Levente Szileszky
Mushroom

It's pretty dire and rapidly worsening...

...based on my lunch with one major storage system vendor yesterday; they said it's already 90 days and it's just getting longer and longer - apparently everybody is trying to order even more than usual (to build their stock) which in turn pushes shipping dates even further back.

It's pretty scary out there and no end in sight (=regular shipping times) before next Spring.

I, for one, hope that this teaches a lesson or two to system builders, storage system vendors etc about maintaining their own 90 days worth of 'cushioning" for periods like this...

Sony and Ericsson divorce

Levente Szileszky
Angel

Should've done it long time ago; sood times ahead for Sony IF...

...they can change their screwed-up corporate culture.

Seriously, SE was deeply in red BEFORE first Android units started to arrive - that was the perfect time to buy out Ericsson... alas, Sony was, and to some extent still is, a mess at corporate level.

Anyhow, it's good news, full integration of all Sony services etc can go ahead now and past incidents of being treated like other 3rd party customers (eg various part shortages with K-series because Sony sold everything to Samsung etc) are the thing of the past, they really should spin up their turnaround time.

I see 3 important steps that needs to be done:

1. HIRE MORE SOFTWARE ENGINEERS!!!

Seriously, the uber-buggy Xperia launches are downright EMBARRASSING, let alone turning away people for years and when they stick around all they get is dog-slow update pace, only to be abandoned in a year or less... it is _THE THING_ on a phone now, the software stack, treat it accordingly.

2. KEEP CURHING OUT EXCLUSIVE FEATURES - eg are you really THAT stupid, Sony?

Stop selling your superior 8MP Exmor chip to Apple, for example... thanks God Apple has no clue how to handle post-processing the digitized image that comes out of your chip but they learn fast, we know that. Or if you really want to sell it in such numbers then impose a 12-month exclusivity before you give it to your competitiors, how hard is it to understand...?

3. STOP YOUR UBER-CRAZY, ABSOLUTELY CLUELESS JAPANESE MGMT FROM MEDDLING IN WORLDWIDE SALES AND HIRE COMPETENT, LOCAL MANAGERS AND LISTEN TO THEIR FEEDBACK!!!

No offense but all you Japanese are seriously and royally 100% certified weirdos, period. You have absolutely NO CLUE about the US or even Europe, the mega-fuckups of the past few years were really hair-raising (just one example: Xperia X10 was one of the very few phones that came with T-Mobile USA's 1700MHz by default - so what SE you do? Gave it to the iPhone-whoring AT&T who never gave a flying frog about and started selling at half the price of the iPhone... talk about destroying your own brand!)

I also heard from various sales people that nobody EVER asked for any feedback or requests, they don't care, they just dream up some crazy ideas in Japan (as well as in Sweden) then these ppl have to sell it.

Oh, speaking of selling it: really? You really think training your sales people is unnecessary? Yes, you do not train your sales people. At all.
