Snakes on a backplane: Server-room cabling horrors

Re: Underfloor can be much worse!!!

And when we moved out of the building and sold the remainder of the contents, the "dumping crew" made out like a bandit at the recycle bins. There was 5 dump truck loads of copper and silver cables that they sold. We paid them to get rid of the cables, they got paid to recycle them.

Thinking about it... I'm in the wrong business.

Your kids' chances of becoming programmers? ZERO

Re: Mmmh, punch cards

Yep had that happen too.... I was lucky to both attempt at a numerical order on my cards as well as stripping the card tops with markers.

I guess I started late...

I started out on a IBM360/VM in college. I could punch 80 cards a minute (cobol). I biggest program was 5 full boxes of punch cards. Later we went to a 370/VM and then the classroom got a PDP11/70. By the time I finished college I was writing programs for In-Line Waiting Systems, marketing programs using PARADOX on a IBM 286 system with 2 MEGS of RAM.

Things a changed a lot. I have 2 kids that are now PROGRAMMERS and another one writing things in JAVA and Ruby.

Re: Blleeeeacchhhhh

A lot of the "newer" 3D engines for games will give me Visual Induced Vertigo until the frame rate is in the 80+fps range. I can watch my son on his computer playing Skyrim for about 20 minutes or so with the fps at 75, a slower rate (say 60 fps) I have about 5 minutes before everything turns chunky.

I get Visual Induced Vertigo with a lot of the 3D games

that have come out (Skyrim, Portal 2, Half-Life, Fallout), even at extreme frame rates (which reduces the time to puke). I don't sit and stare at my iOS 7 phone, but it has on occasion when it is whizzing my icons by, I do get that visual feeling.
