Cloudy outlook for climate models

Robinson

Poor Mommycalled

"More AGW bovine flatuance. Model verification requires the model to reproduce observed climate before the model is used in experiments. The models used in the IPCC report model past climate very well. More evidence that the oil/gas industry dis-information campaign is working"

Please get a brain Mommy. They only model past climate because they are "calibrated" to do so.

"This step has been taken as this is a word that members of our audience would find offensive."

Rubbish. Look at the poll on their website. Over 95% of people think it should *not* have been edited. As usual, this is nothing more than the PC bullshit typical of the BBC.

Mental Health

Amusing as these stories are, I can't help thinking (especially after listening to them on the radio), that the vast majority are associated with some mental health disorder, rather than just plain idiocy in the general public. So perhaps just a snigger would be more appropriate.

The day Microsoft 'embraced and extended' Java

Java, .NET

I've written with Java and .NET. The Java applet project I was involved with was written with MS J++, but tested with Suns JVM. I just prefer the developer tools from Microsoft, compared to things like NetBeans, which seemed to take 1/2 hour to start-up on my system and looked and felt totally different to all my other windows software.

I also think .NET is one thing Microsoft has actually done very well. Both C# and Visual Basic.NET are ahead of Java imho with respect to things like generics and the richness of their libraries. WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) is another technology that I think is going to ably compete with Flash (Action Script if I remember was a royal pain in the arse). I would even go so far as to say MS are ahead of the game with their WPF coding model, especially as it's backed by the .NET CLR.

I don't hold out much hope of true .NET platform cross-compatibility; people speak of Mono, but as far as I can tell the application would have to be pretty limited to succeed (and as such, why not just use Java?). In any case, in these days of Virtualisation, does cross platform compatibility really matter? I wonder.

The only exciting thing about Eve is waiting for the next developer screw-up

Still Nordrick, it's actually paper\scissors\stone combat and usually involves either lag-fest fleet fights, or ganking unarmed or unsuspecting players at gates. Call me old fashioned but that is about as much fun as chewing pebbles.

Yes they are idiots

You people defending CCP for this are living on another planet. We who read technical journals are more than likely technically savvy enough to recognise and fix this problem (you don't say!). A large proportion of the customer base who have this problem WON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT and some of them won't even have internet access to go to the forums and find out how, because CPP have hosed their computers.

The "bug" in the installer was NOTED BY A BUG TESTER 3 DAYS AGO, so CCP obviously didn't read the bug report. I can't say I'm surprised. There are bugs in Eve that were reported 3 years ago and haven't been fixed yet.

Yes Michael, that's because there's a big question mark over anthropogenic influence on climate.

Fair point breakfast, but a scientific study cannot be truly valid unless it is replicable . The point of climateaudit is to show how ad-hoc (and often just plain mathematically wrong) the methods they are using actually are and how often their published work is not enough to reproduce their results. Moreover, none of these "boffins" are trained mathematicians (trained in statistics) and their conclusions are highly unreliable (modeling past temperatures using dodgy temperature proxies for example), so I don't think we should jump every time they publish. At least the point of this story is that there are arguments on both sides and so the BBC should not be promoting one over the other. Not all skeptics are creationist lunatics (indeed Hansen, who published the famous "Hockey Stick" paper is on record are saying skeptics are participating in the "destruction of creation" - so exactly who is are the creationists in this debate?).

At the very least, there is no clarity on the issues involved in climate change and there is certainly no consensus, so promotion of policy is really arbitrary and I happen to think somewhat absurd. Another problem is that "climate change" is bundled in with environmentalism in general. Nobody things more pollution is a good thing, but we do disagree on just how much of a pollutant CO2 actually is. Personally, I think its a wonderful gas (plants grow much more vigorously in its presence!).

@Idiotic and @Jim,

If you want to know just how AGW data collection and analysis proceeds, just visit climateaudit.org. If after seeing exactly what goes on you still think climatologists are doing real "science", then I suggest you don't really understand how science actually works.

Robinson

Idiotic

If you want to switch off all your electrical equipment, you are free to do so whenever you like. Why wait for the BBC to tell you?

The BBC should not be involved in `raising awareness' (eco-communist propaganda) about something as nebulous, unproven and completely and utterly idiotic as anthropogenic carbon dioxide based climate change.

A program pitching the alarmists\eco-loonies against the skeptics - now that would be worth watching.

Mr Roper, please get a grip. Antarctica is not melting. In fact satellite observation shows it to be getting BIGGER, as it should be (warmer weather, more precipitation, more snow and ice). Indeed, the mean global temperature of the earth has not increased since 1998. Global cooling anyone?

This is a non-story. Climate models are useless and can be made to show any trend you so desire. If I told you I had an economic model that predicted 25% interest rates in the year 2030, you would call me an idiot. So why do you believe these models? They contain even more unknowns, use unreliable initial data for their forcings and do not adequately take into account the sun, precipitation systems, clouds, etc. (the list is endless).

The fact that this one spits out a prediction of "evens" that something is going to happen increases my view that this whole debate is a cretinous insanity of the most pointless kind.

Sun's activity not to blame for climate change

PHD?

You don't need a PHD in a subject to have an opinion on it. Sometimes the stupidity of the conclusions are so obvious a basic GCSE will do fine.

La Niña

Please don't make the mistake of stating that the recent UK floods are caused by man made global warming. Our current summer weather is more than likely caused by the La Niña weather pattern.

"La Niña is characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, as compared to El Niño, which is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific"

Robinson

Contradictory research

It would be useful for you to state what is meant by "solar activity" in this paper. A recent similar story pointed to sunspot activity currently being at its highest since the medieval warming period 1,000 years ago, correlating nicely with both that and the maunder minimum (the little ice age).
