Wing Commander III changed how the copy hotkey works in Windows 95

The Cyrix 6x86 line was an awful series of bad design decisions.

On a "Genuine Intel", Windows 95 *was* a much better way of playing DOS games. It didn't need crap like MSCDEX, Graphics, soundcard or mouse drivers hogging the lower 640k. For the original DOS version of Quake, iD recommended using Win95 for networking, otherwise you had to use proprietary TCP/IP drivers. It even played nice with the DOS/4GW dos extender. Was it perfect? Heck no! It was less crap than multiboot configs for different games though.

Doom is 30, and so is Windows NT. How far we haven't come

Re: Word 6

Totally agree, but you can bet that every Reg Reader will be in the 10%. Or at least think they are. ;)

Are you sure? I don't have a copy of W10 handy, but I don't remember ever having that issue and I'm sure I would've noticed. It's definitely not the case for W11.

Re: Hooray for Avoirdupois and pounds, shillings and pence

Spirits used to be in fractions of a Gill. (Pronounced Jill. No, me neither)

In Scotland it was commonly as 1/4 Gills and England 1/5 Gills.

That turned into 35ml vs 25ml - a difference I find much easier to visualise - but difficult to stomach at the same price.

Baby and Bathwater springs to mind - often seems like the Gnome-devs looked at what did work in Win95 and threw those out first.

I've lost count of the number of times Firefox has been a marvelous browser, added pointless cruft until it's rendered unusable and then been stripped down again.

Re: Linux "Desktop"

Like most weird UIs, it's only weird to new, or occasional users. Personally, I find most Line-Of-Business application UIs to only make sense when considered from the perspective of the professionals who use them day-to-day.

Like Photoshop or Gimp. They are seriously weird for anyone coming from Paint level programs.

Microsoft have dicked around with the Start Menu in every single version since they introduced it in Win95. And every time, someone's written a tool to emulate the previous version.

Microsoft's do-it-all IDE Visual Studio 2022 came out late last year. How good is it really?

5) Templates were not in 1st edition TC++PL (1985). They were first described in the ARM (1989), They were implemented in Cfront3.0 (1991) and documented in 2nd Edition TC++PL (1991).

It's safer to say generic programming was always intended to be in C++, but it took a while for it to be added.

Ancient history

Strictly speaking, it was a POSIX subsystem, not UNIX.

And to install successfully Impish Indri in WSL, you need to remove snapd. It's an ill wind... and silver linings all round.
