Confirmed: Apple gives nod to gobblement of Kinect-maker PrimeSense

Improving the interface

Fact is, on iOS devices, there is no "mouse hover" state. This puts those of us who are web developers into a bit of a pickle, as we have to retranslate a "touch" on mobile into "mouseover" through the use of JavaScript.

If this motion sensing brought back mouseover, mouseout, hover, mousein states, it would seriously improve the interface for iOS. I have a feeling that the sensor would be intentionally "blind" (as the Kinect is) at distances that are not practical for these gestures. On iOS, the gesture would be just a few inches. On Apple TV, a number of feet.

I, for one, am rooting for them. In terms of the science, it's redundant -- but coordinated redundancy is quite useful to science.

As to the cost difference, the US fields much more complex probes and use expensive boosters to achieve solar orbit, rather than using orbital mechanics to achieve the solar orbit necessary.

BlackBerry in talks to spin off Messenger division

Headline should have read:

"Blackberry to spin off only profitable segment. Death of Blackberry nigh."

Seriously, it's a shame. Blackberry INVENTED the Smartphone (well, Palm was in there somewhere, but it's gone now...). I really want to root for them, but they're now clueless about what makes a profit now. Of course that's bad for all smartphone users. With Blackberry, Apple and Google will have to innovate more.
