Apple admits iPhone battery suckage, promises fix

Clint Sharp

Uh, over 3000 posts on a support thread? Let's not forget many folk won't report to an Internet support forum, many will go to an Apple store and many more will just assume it's a "Non issue." and they should "Just avoid holding it in that way."

3000+ posts is rather significant even if half are replies or duplicates by people who have already posted.

New Sony hack exposes more consumer passwords

Clint Sharp

Getting boring

Sigh, store passwords/usernames plaintext, simple flaws, sql injection, have we a 'bot that writes these stories please?

It's always the same old story, idiot complacent megacorp ignores basic good practice, loses buckets of data about customers, wrings hands, squeezes onion bag and promises to be good and fix the problem, blames nasty hackers for all their stupidity.

Sony should know better by now given their recent woes.

Apple admits scareware problem, at last

Clint Sharp

I found half a maggot in this Apple

I think the main problem lies with Apple and their fanbois.

I've lost count of the number of times I've met Apple users in my day to day working life who religiously believe that their sainted machines are invulnerable to malware of any sort.

Sure, we're mostly techy types in here and yes, we know when not to give a piece of software a password or agree to install something (although I will admit to clicking the wrong button once or twice, experiencing the 'ohnosecond') but the same old argument applies, you *have* to educate the lowest common denominator.

Preaching that a platform is invulnerable or worse denying the existence of an extant and demonstrable problem does not do that, it makes it *more* likely that the average 'I just wanna get on me facebook mate' user will do something stupid.

FWIW, despite some of my more rabid anti Apple/fanboi posts on here, I do like Apple computers I just despise the attitude of the company and the fanbois.

Elite coder readies £15 programming gadget for schools

Give me Ethernet rather than a second USB port, you're adding a layer of abstraction that requires *lots* of coding to get around if you use USB ethernet, make it a simple Ethernet chip like the Microchip SPi offering or, better still, use an ARM that has it in silicon.

Oh, and for £15, put me down for half a dozen if they get that Ethernet on there..

It's a sales pitch

Who are the biggest electric car liars - the BBC, or Tesla Motors?

Clint Sharp

No sparks

Most battery chargers of the past 10 years or more have been 'smart', no sparks. They don't turn on the charging current until they see a battery voltage at the end of the charge leads. I would be very surprised if the battery/charger on an EV weren't considerably smarter than a traditional lead acid when it comes to charging.

Clint Sharp

The lottery terminals most definitely *do* use satellite.

It was installed in lottery retailers premises around the same time as the 'new' lottery terminals about 2-3 years ago I think and it's been an ongoing upgrade as ISDN has lost favour. ADSL is a second choice as it's not considered reliable enough.

TBH, I already know lots of this, a close family member is a copper and with a little nudge they'll often tell us of the utter chavvy futility of much of the work they do. Anyone who read Inspector Gadget's blog or Copperfield's blog will also know how screwed we are.

Having been criticised in a direct email by an author for one of my comments I do feel the no author criticism rule a little unfair though.

Nokia: digital SLRs are doomed

Clint Sharp

Not just

For people who use DSLRs for snaps.

I'd class myself as an advanced snapper (I'm aware of the technicalities and can, if pressed remember how they work together) but even I appreciate the quality of my DSLR over the crappy camera on the Nokia I just trialled and got rid of. Hells, I can produce better pics from my 9 year old Nikon E775 compact(ish) than from my mobile camera.

Whilst technical ability can give you a better picture with any camera, a better camera *can* give a better picture to most people.

After trialling the Nokia X6 a month back and being massively disappointed, I can honestly say I don't think I'll ever bother with Nokia again so it comes as no surprise that their staff make idiot comments like that.

Sure Signal not so sure

Multiple travel firms refuse ID cards as passport alternative

Big Brother

More reasons.

I can prove who I am, I have plenty of forms of ID, some government issued (they seem happy that I'm not about to go bang on a train) , some not.

It's not about fear of change, it's about mistrust.

Whilst there may be 'strict rules' and formal procedures around access to the data they hold on me, I still don't trust them any further than I could throw them. Let's face it, if our elected representatives can so comprehensively milk the system and wheedle their way around the rules covering their expenses what makes you think they deserve our trust?

If the public facing leeches are that bad, exactly how corrupt are the ones that don't have to answer to the press?

I'm not a criminal, I'm not 'shady' or trying to evade paying anything but I'm constantly treated as though I'm a criminal. When they start to trust me then I will consider trusting them.

5-megapix 'iPhone 4' set for June?

Clint Sharp
Paris Hilton

Oddly enough..

I know a few iphone users.

Now they've had their iPhones a while they all hate them, apart from the Mac user who bought it because he's a fanboi and won't admit it's a steaming turd. It's funny watching him redialling and trying to keep a calm face as his 'My first Mobile' disconnects him or locks up or just plain dies.

I also do some work for a UK mobile phone retailer, their staff tell me that the majority of jeebus phone customers only buy it because it's fashionable, they also tell me they get plenty of complaints about it dropping calls and having a crappy camera with a few MMS/SMS related ones thrown in for good measure.

Fashion, vapid and substanceless, serving only to satiate the idiots who are easily lead as part of the herd.

Paris, vapid but she could satiate me.
