@Alister: Re: Disqualified

Alister,

if I may chip-in, if Fox hunting is a sport, how many of the dogs/horses/riders have to get ripped to bits for the fox to have 'won'?

Sport it isn't, imho it is a moderately good reason to get dressed up and ride around the countryside, [potentially] killing a fox in the process.

Also I do live in the countryside, have neighbours who have lost chickens due to foxes, and have relatives who did hunt...

Which makes me wonder (anecdotal curiousity) why so many NHS trusts are cattle-trucked and are not very good at 'innovating' - granted I have painted with a broad brush but I suspect you get the gist!

From my experience (wifey is a senior physicist), 98% of the 'medics that manage' should have stuck to medicine, there are so many perfect examples of The Peter Principle in action it is genuinely scary...

@Doctor syntax

DS,

there is a difference between 'offshoring' and trade deals, one is sending UK/creating jobs overseas, the other is [potentially] creating jobs here, as a result of selling more of the stuff overseas due to lower/no import duties.

It's really not that complicated...

Ironically my nascent business will be better off when HMG [eventually] signs a few trade deals, as we will be exporting the bulk of our stuff from England to the far/middle east & USA...

@AC: Re: Which is usually called...

Dear AC,

Actually it isn't cynical at all! A little while ago I used help 'fix' troubled £xxxm programmes, funnily enough I have never encountered a cattle-tracked programme that needed to change to the latest whizz-bang methodology.

But I did encounter quite a few where:

- the client didn't know what they needed/wanted (which rarely actually matched)

- the sales numpties' primary focus was their commision, as opposed to selling something that would be viable/functional/add some value

- senior Directors/programme managers who would have 0% probability getting hired for the job they held if they were an 'outsider', due to them being f'ing idiots

- for some inexplicable reason, the client thought that hiring consultants/outsourcers to fix what was actually a cultural (not technical) issue would dramatically improve their organisations over a year or so....

Cheers!

Equal stupidity at Network Rail

A little while ago, whilst on a commercial related role for a LARGE programme for Network Rail (£xBn), I asked why something that was having a fence put around it needed five gates (@ £1,600 EACH), I was advised 'it was a typo', funnily enough I found lots of typos and things that by an amazing coincidence did not even f'ing remotely add up...

A little while later a senior manager gave me some 'friendly' advice' about how I may want to carry out my role.

Shortly thereafter I bowed out due to stress.

Re the HS2 debacle-to-be, from my experience of Network Rails' institutional stupidity and inherent dislike of providing 'value for money' the losses due to fraud and incompetence will be mind-boggingly amazing.

Items I heard of being:

- NR building something on land they didn't own, then finding that the owner of said land held them to ransom

- due to the nature of having fixed-fees agreed for certain types of legal work, the managers/contractors would decide how to divvy up any dosh that was left, I am sure that NONE of that ever got back to any NR staff

- Doing a survey and somehow MISSING A BRIDGE that crossed a river

- Do a full plan and cost budget for installing some BIG expensive widgets, but FORGETTING to like, y'know put the power in place...

WTF?

@The First Dave: Re: @David Nash: @Naughtyhorse: @just enough: Mean while, back in the real world...

The First Dave,

I'll take my time, hopefully it'll sink in....

At the last general election, there were more than three candidates (I don't recall the precise # and can't be arsed to look it up).

Candidate A was previously elected to the previous sitting of parliament.

Candidate B wasn't quite my kettle of fish

So I voted for Candidate C!!!

Candidate A got the most ticks in the box, so he was elected, which is fine by me!!

So to summarise:

- I did vote

- but for someone who regretably didn't get enough # to become my MP.

Would you be so kind as to clarify how me choosing which candidate I voted for somehow results in me having 'zero control' over who is elected as my MP, as clearly I am missing something eh?

Also if you actually READ my post, nowhere does it state, hint, generally point in the direction of me (or anyone else!) Being able to CHOOSE our Monarch, that's why it's called a MONARCHY!!

Is that clear?

CF,

Err no matey, the primary reason for the state of many southern european economies is that the Euro simply does not match their economic requirements, this allied with the Franco/German solution for a starving economy to starve it even faster clearly hasn't worked!

Of course there is also the issue that the EU knew that about their relative fiscal cycles and day-to-day tax related issues, but let them all join the club anyway...

But hey, if we had a common tax base, unified laws, common treasury functions and a full banking union (plus our own army), it would all be fine eh?

fruitoftheloon
WTF?

Mean while, back in the real world...

Any organisation only changes for one of two reasons:

- it has too

- it wants too...

Clearly the EU isn't overly fussed about fixing the glaring flaws: CAP, absurd unemployment in southern states, mass emigration, innappropriate effective costs of money, causing mammoth f'ups that only benefit people trackers & Vladimir Putin

So why would it want to change then, unless it is FORCED too?

Btw I love Europe, can get by in French & German, had my recent honeymoon in Paris, I love german cars & beer, adore french food & wine.

My family a few generations back are from Irish & Dutch stock, my mother-in-law is American, so lest anyone think otherwise I believe my self by thought and action to be as far away from a stereotypical 'little Englander' as is possible!

Europe is great, next year I expect to be selling lots of stuff I am currently developing to our european cousins.

BUT I have an MP and a monarch, my fundamental belief is that they should basically 'run' our country, not folk we have never heard of, voted for and can't kick them out of office if we want to...

And as to a European Army? If it wasn't so scary it would be bloody hilarious!

For those that wish to carry on rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, go for it, I'm voting for leaving before we all drowned.

My 2p...

I suspect that they are not trying to tell you anything. Btw who do you think is 'harmed by the hatred' of a footie or rugby fan donning the flag in some fashion?

Granted things flag-related are different in Europe to the US of A (thank cluck for that), generally speaking methinks the hysteria quotient is a little more grown-up in blighty.

@Steve Davies 3: Re: Scope creep

Steve,

A little while ago ~10 yrs I had an 'interesting' role with the Capita Risk team, a key part of which re big sales pitches necessitated:

- reading the ENTIRE client reqs document(s)

- reading the ENTIRE draft contract from the sales bods.

Often there would be lack of congruence between:

- what the client said they wanted

- what the sales bods and techies THOUGHT the client needed

- what the client actually NEEDED

- what it was technically and practically viable to deliver within the defined timeframe(s)

I am proud of my achievements therein, bearing in mind that human nature rightly points out what f'ed up, but overlooks what worked (yes there were several).

Trouble is, the type of role I had only worked if your boss reported to the Group FD, who incidentally made Gordon Ramsey look like the UN Secretary General...
