Nice computers don’t need to go to the toilet, says Barclays

wbaw

Can we have some kind of clearer warning in the headline so that I don't need to click on these Alistair Dabbs stories. If I'm tired & emotional then I could think there's real news about computers going to the toilet.

TLS isn't end-to-end encryption for email, everything is decrypted on each server, it just encrypts the transport layer (if it can). You'd want to use something like PGP for end to end encryption for email.

Re: First modem

You had a modem? Luxury. Here in Yorkshire ...

I use to have to copy games on to audio tape & swap them in the playground. The school's (single) computer was a BBC B & nobody else could afford those, so it was only educational software on it.

And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.

They don't have users, you'd need to be insane to consider using libressl on a production server right now, they've only just started (re)writing it.

For Windows guest - KVM or XEN and which distro for host?

wbaw

You're not going to play 3D Windows games in a VM, not very well.

Apart from that KVM works well.

Buy another PC & use a KVM switch.

Re: Damnit, Google! What does "Transparency" mean to you?

They actually added another layer of security on top of Linux to separate apps from each other & give finer grained permissions control for each app to the user, without making it too complicated.

The latest version even comes with SELinux enabled by default. So it's at least as good as an average 4 month old Linux system with no firewall, that you use on public networks & that hasn't had any updates. If you have a Nexus with 4.4.

It's mainly the OS update system that is lacking. Takes months for most manufacturers to update their latest devices & the older ones are stuck on old versions with known root exploits forever.

At least a simple packet filter firewall enabled by default would seem sensible too.

Re: Ethical

It's unethical because you could choose to buy a different phone that could be customised without jailbreaking. By buying Apple you're giving them the money & sales figures to justify locking it down. Eventually they'll do it right & you wont be able to jailbreak your new iphone.

I don't see any problem if you were given your iphone or stole it.

Re: Fair?

So, why do you buy such a locked phone & keep funding Apple to make them more locked?

Re: Secure email

Javascript encryption can never be secure because it's too easy for an active attacker to inject malicious javascript code into your web page that can intercept the plain text.
