Re: Rose tinting?

How about if you are logged in to gmail or any other Google product or signed into another service using a Google+ account and also using Google DNS? I can imagine they could correlate the data in that instance. However, it is data and that is valuable to Google, even if they have no use for it now, they may find a use later, costs them very little in the scheme of things.

Re: Nothing too extensive

My mum when she was in her 60's decided she needed a computer now at 76, she is quite comfortable with them, but the old man refused to have anything to do with computers. Then a few years ago we bought mum an iPad and he started playing a few games(dominos, sudoku etc.) ended up we had to buy him his own iPad for the sake of family harmony. Now it's not just games, it news, sport and he is learning more everyday, he is 79. Interesting thing he has a friend who is very ill and can't get out, but has an iPad, online dominos I believe is being experimented with, FaceTime is also useful.

Now they only watch TV when the iPads need recharging:-)

Just a small point...

A Rose is still a Rose...

Will check this out tomorrow on my test setup, this is good news, why? Crappy old hardware! Takes less than 4 watts, the RPi as a server can easily handle a class of 15 with Khan Academy Lite, with the RPi also working as a desktop client with modern monitors, the implications for village schools in the back of beyond, running on small solar arrays, other renewables or limited shore power, with battery and inverters are fantastic.

Yes, fan of RPi, for a good reason, you do also realise that not all the world has affordable energy, never mind modern computers, but education is important for all?

Name = who cares?

Old = does it work and is it affordable and reliable?

$2 = don't give a shit about coding, not even close to that bridge.

Hmmm, that does seem rather aggressive for me, oh well, let it stand :-)

Hardkernel nixes RPi clone project

Speculation on forums...

nope, seems RPi mod has locked the forum, probably a good idea, judging by the 16 posts, which range from well argued to tin foil hat.

Anyone can make guesses at what has happened, but the truth is probably,

1. Hardkernel, we have worked hard on a clone of RPi, can we buy x of this SoC

2. Broadcom, yes, price will be = z

3. Hardkernel, we can't afford that price

4. Broadcom, ok if you buy 10x we can give you this price

5. Hardkernel, we can't afford that risk

6. Broadcom, sorry can't help

Perhaps RPi could offer to sell the quantities required by Hardkernel, but maybe RPi have T&C's that say they are not allowed.

The issue is probably better understood if we knew where the first batch of Broadcom SoC that Hardkernel used to develop their product, came from, was it Broadcom, a distributor getting rid of stock, bankrupt stock...

I could be wrong, but in the last few years RPi has pretty much followed the Arduino model - 'if you want to make it carry on, but don't call it Arduino'

I visit their website almost daily and they always IMHO are 'on message' with their mission about improving education in computer science and related subjects, the hardware whoever supplies it, is just another vehicle for this.

Re: History catching up again.

I will probably get the iPhone 6 in October, I will drop back to my old iPhone 4 sell the iPhone 5s and use the money to buy the 6.

My reasons are simple, resale value of the 5s is good, therefore it costs less to keep up with the latest iPhone. This effort, affords me(normally) a little better battery life, a slightly faster phone, a slightly more reliable phone, a phone in warranty and lots of other little bits.

Waiting until October, is to ensure, those little bits I mention are true, smartphones are smartphones, the brand you choose is, just the brand you choose, for the reason you choose. For me the differentiator is resale value and the iPhone and Mac products in general are clear winners in that. The buy in cost is higher, but once in, the running costs and feature set are about the same as any other product on the market, if not, well whats another year, did not miss them before, so the wait is no big deal.

The best filter coffee I have come across is from Lidl, gold packaged Arabica, don't have any left to give you the brand name, but it is really good and the price is fantastic IMHO, when I had my pubs people used to always complement the coffee(cafetière served) if that is anything to go by.

Korean vendor launches wearable RPi clone

Salts

Re: What's great about it..

Well, yes. if you use the same SoC as the RPi otherwise you maybe up the creek.

I think the best thing to say, is "The greatest form of flattery is imitation" pretty sure we have not arrived at the IBM PC clone market. Many of the "RPi like devices" have always been, the same but different, but this seems to be a clone. Though not that cheap, when compared to a RPi B+, as you need the docking board for the Odroid-W to get the USB and ethernet, but the eMMC is interesting, if you need it.

Guess we will have to see if Odroid-W puts £1,000,000 into an education fund and more than that into open source development, with the profits they make.

OK I am a staunch support of the Raspberry Pi and more so of the achievements and direction of the RPi Foundations :-)

Mine is no my desk under a pile of paper, haven't used it this month, really must give it more attention, but I like my old Linux desktop(it's like slippers :-) and the last time I was going away I knew I had to get a ropey local fishing boat to my destination, took the chromebook, I get drenched but the chromebook was ok and if it wasn't well, $199 against $2,300 mac book, yep, no contest :-)

I like the mac book, it is a great bit of kit light weight, looks good, good battery, no upgrade path, don't care, can sell it for a good price and upgrade and not loose much and get CPU, Memory, Battery & disk upgrade all at the same time.

Re: Camera phones at sports events

you do have gps, exif, wifi and bluetooth data, being recorded/transmitted on smart phones.

I don't see it as being easy, but possible, imagine I enter a stadium via gate 'f' smart phone in pocket, the time and location could now be known, but even if I was pointing my smart phone in the right direction, it is improbable it will capture anything worthwhile, as reference to my location, via mapping of the stadium shows this. However those that enter through gate 'c' should have a good view, with gate 'a' also possible.

You could also grab facebook and twitter for the event/incident and match up the data.

post mortem, you will certainly have something worthwhile, whether this is a 3d image or not, I can see law enforcement, marketing, sale etc. loving the idea, time to get my tinfoil hat :-)

It is my go to travel companion these days, however I also need access to a full blown OS, the chromebook can't do everything I need, but if you just need social networking, youtube, webmail, WP, spreadsheet, note taking(stackEdit excellent) play music & videos at the price you can't really go wrong. One last bit I can't see the need for a core i3 and 4gb ram the c720 dual core celeron & 2gb is more than enough.
