Eight in ten IBM Global Tech Services roles will be offshore by 2017

Re: So what does IBM DO then?

They aren't outsourcing their staff, it's offshoring. They employ people in India etc to do the work rather than paying three times the price for people in mature markets. That way "in theory" companies can outsource their IT to IBM for cheaper than doing it themselves. I wouldn't call a company with hundreds of thousands of employees a shell company. They also sell software.

BTW I'm not saying it's a good/fair business model but just letting you know the facts. IBM has plenty of problems but being a shell company is not one of them

Re: Company splits in half at the end of last year....

They restated their financial statements from last year so the decline is an apples to apples comparison. The Reg didn't need to do any maths, HPE did it for them

IBM sued for talking up semiconductor business it couldn't give away

Do these lawsuits ever actually work? For starters, if IBM had to pay $1 to every shareholder, its share price would drop by $1 so I hope this pension fund isn't still a shareholder. And if they are not, how much can they possibly expect to gain? Besides, who could have predicted that IBM would get less than nothing?

Re: "Distant memory" indeed

You do realise that Amazon only makes a few billion dollars from IT and the whole company can barely turn a profit. It's very easy to dominate a market if you aren't worried about actually making money for your shareholders. IBM makes over $100B in revenue and $17B in profit. It's the second largest IT company in terms of revenue behind HP and second behind MS in profit. Hardly what I would call "just another" IT company

Re: As ever ...

Your logic is right but facts are wrong. Q4 is always the biggest quarter (take a look at the link below). You could just as easily argue that Samsung's sales would have been even higher except for the stock pumped into the channel in Q4. Or you could just accept it's not a perfect comparison but the difference is large enough that no matter what, Samsung sold more phones than Apple.
