Apple has locked me in the same monopolistic cage Microsoft's built for Windows 10 users

Re: So why does Apple get less stick than Microsoft for their planned obsolescence blackmail?

"Unlike Microsoft, Apple have full, 100% control over every aspect of this thing"

What are you talking about? Microsoft is far worse now, turning Windows into an absolute shitshow that is not only defective in both design and execution, but badgers and stymies the user endlessly by demanding that you log in, LOG IN, LOGGGG INNNN with an idiotic "Microsoft account" that nobody wants or needs.

Microsoft also orphaned millions of computers with capricious hardware requirements, far more egregiously than Apple. My late-2014 iMac was supported for quite a long time.

BTW, I tried OCLP on that machine and it sucked. Even if you can get past the project-runners' shitty attitude, there's the issue of trusting your information to a heavily-patched system. And if you get past that, you still have a basically unusable computer. Even Safari wouldn't work reliably. The system was plagued by never-ending errors and functional failures that made it a total waste of time. That computer is now running Mint.

absurd and not credible

This is ridiculous. This guy knew damn well that a tablet, especially an Apple one, was not going to replace a proper computer... especially given his use cases.

Microsoft open sources PostgreSQL extensions to muscle in on NoSQL

I wish they'd give up on Windows. What a sorry, offensive, defective POS they've made it.

LibreOffice still kicking at 40, now with browser tricks and real-time collab

Re: All you need

Then there's Excel's utter incompetence in formatting text the way you tell it to.

Or they're lazy or lack the technical acumen to run a business's IT.

EU irate about geo-locked Apple IDs

OscarG

multiple Apple IDs

Apple introduced this problem when they forced people to start using E-mail addresses as user IDs. It's a stupid policy that predictably resulted in people setting up multiple IDs when their E-mail addresses changed.

At one point enough people complained that Apple actually responded, but only to huffily declare that they weren't going to fix the problem and allow people to merge accounts. Typical behavior from a company that loves to break shit and then not provide any solution... even at a fee.

OscarG

At what point does Apple finally admit that being a worldwide dick isn't financially viable... or even advantageous?

Raspberry Pi AI Camera takes inferencing load off the CPU

Every Pi camera has been utter trash. Instead of simply delivering a higher-quality, low-noise camera... they deliver this.

Sad.

Google says replacing C/C++ in firmware with Rust is easy

Yeah I totally trust the word of a company that managed to create an OS that lacks a proper hardware abstraction layer and driver model in 2008, making millions of devices non-updateable by their owners until a hacked, proprietary version of that OS is rolled out for every model of every phone one at a time... separately by every telecom company... if it ever is (which it most likely isn't). Android is given cutesy names to obscure how orphaned and out of date a huge portion of its user base is.

Meanwhile, creaky old Windows was installable on day of release, on millions of disparate hardware configurations.

Users rage as Microsoft announces retirement of Office 365 connectors within Teams

When we people learn to GTFO out Microsoft's trash? They played nice while they were a moribund, forgotten company. Now they're roaring back as bigger assholes than ever. Windows is an offensive, incompetent shitshow... as is Office.

There are open-source or small-source alternatives that are far better than Microsoft's clumsy junk. GET OUT NOW.

AI hallucinates software packages and devs download them – even if potentially poisoned with malware

Re: Not "hallucinates"

Exactly. People love to regurgitate incorrect terms, apparently to seem "cool" or "in the know." But they just reveal ignorance.

AI does not "hallucinate." English offers a wide variety of words, one of which is "fabricate." Use that if you can't figure out an equally good one next time.

Apple slams Android as a 'massive tracking device' in internal slides revealed in Google antitrust battle

Re: Pot... Kettle...

Exactly. Lumping Apple in with the rest of "big tech" reveals profound ignorance of what each company does.

Apple is not a gatekeeper to the Internet, or even large sections of it, to millions of people. Google, Amazon, and (sadly) Meta are. Nor is Apple a monopoly over anything except its own mobile-device app store, which is not a monopoly in its market either.

The only legitimate aggrieved party in Apple's case is developers, and even their grievances are limited to Apple's lies and capricious behavior in regard to its app store.

Jony Ive is a pompous hack

Clueless Tim Cook has allowed Jony Ive to destroy the usefulness of every Apple product.

Ive is the Trump of consumer-electronics design: With no ideas of his own, he only seeks to destroy the achievements of generations of predecessors.

His idiotic, played-out, and embarrassing mania for "thinness" (which no one asked for) has been used as an excuse to hideously cripple one product after another.

Apple needs to fire this asshole and get its house in order.

PlayStation daddy on new PS4: She's ALL 'PLAY', NO 'Station' this time

OscarG

Yes, because MP3 playback is "too hard."

BS, Sony.

This is a response to backlash over the fact that the PS4 doesn't have basic media-playback capability. Not even CD playback, which is built into every cheap-as-dirt Chinese DVD drive!

The media player and UI on the PS3 are pathetic, but instead of fixing them with a simple user interface, Sony just DELETES the functionality altogether! Oh, but they had time to REQUIRE Facebook integration for user avatars and photos, instead of simply using the camera that COMES WITH the system.

As time goes on, it's clear that there aren't enough designers to do the work that's required.

Finder: a disgrace

There's no excuse for having to use a plug-in or hack like PathFinder to fix glaring and elementary deficiencies in a FILE BROWSER. Finder stands as an insult to users and an embarrassment to Apple year after year.

A file browser that doesn't even sort properly (with folders AT THE TOP of sorted lists)? That doesn't show you WHERE search results have been found (because there's no path shown for each hit)? That doesn't start searches in the selected folder by default, or even offer that as an option. That doesn't create a new folder within the selected folder when you say "New folder", but instead creates it at the root of the volume (which is often off-screen). That litters your computer and any others you browse with DS_STORE turds, to save display options and other crap instead of storing it LOCALLY.

What kind of inbred thought process leads a programmer to design a file browser that spews files onto every OTHER computer it visits? That's just offensive. Not to mention a totally defective design, since the next person who browses that same directory will overwrite the turds you left.

Finder was supposed to be "rewritten from the ground up" years ago. What happened? Nothing. It's the same defective POS it's always been.
