Police 'stumped' by car thefts using electronic skeleton key

BornToWin

It's not the ability to develop electronic digital keys...

...that has the cops mystified, it's that the crimes are only able to disable the alarm and open the passenger's door. They can't unlock the ignition nor start the car so more than likely they've developed some cheap tool that sends a default signal to disable the alarm and unlock the pass door but nothing more. Real thieves would have the good stuff and actually steal the car not the contents. Thus these are likely to be amateurs such as teens or drug addicts without the resources to chop-shop the vehicles. They might have modded a remote control garage door opener?

AMD chalks up Opteron X design win on HP Moonshot hyperscale system

BornToWin

AMD is in the driver's seat

When it comes to APUs AMD is in the driver's seat and will be for quite awhile. Seamicro should be able to deliver a generic version using Koyoto chips.

Intel: Haswell is biggest 'generational leap' we have EVER DONE

BornToWin

Close but no cigar

Haswell is actually quite a disappointment from the CPU aspect. The GPU section is a nice performance bump but the CPU gained almost nothing. With the absurd Intel pricing these are going to be a tough sell with AMD's APUs being superior for portable devices at all power and price levels.

Elon Musk pledges transcontinental car juicers by end of year

BornToWin

It's OK to be an optimist...

...but IMO Elon is more a dreamer looking for investors and government free money to increase his bank account. He is an expert at getting politicians to finance unsustainable businesses.

China denies hacking claims, says it doesn’t need US tech

Belarus becomes world's top country ... for SPAM

BornToWin

I'm all for full recourse

I suggest using the top secret tech that allows authorities to send a digital fire to the HDDSs of all SPAMMERs burning up their PC hardware. I hope that film crews are on site when the fires begin and the perps panic. This would be news worth watching.

EMC inks deal to take Brit F1 racer Lotus to the clouds

BornToWin

Lotus in name only

This isn't actually Lotus the car maker. This F1 team just has rights to the Lotus name since the real Lotus car maker departed F1 years ago.

As far as Lotus using the cloud...Lotus is under budgeted and always a few weeks away from bankruptcy IMO so they might not even make it through the current F1 season, even though they have been pretty competitive with Kimi the past two seasons.

AMD takes on Atom S server chips with 'Kyoto' Opteron Xs

BornToWin

For those not paying attention...

These Jaguar based X-series processors are for MICROservers. The don't compete with Atom, they bury Atom. Why would anyone even consider Atom when they can have these far superior Jaguar based APUs for less than Intel charges for Atom? AMD has hit another homerun with Jaguar and the Steamroller cored power server processors will be better than Jaguar and shipping in late Q4 of '13.

Anonymous 'plonks' names, addresses of far-right EDL types on web

BornToWin

Ouch !

A few more anonymous members to bite the dust. These people must want to get into prison really badly. Did someone tell them they get 21 virgins when they go to prison or something?

'$6bn money-laundering website' Liberty Reserve kingpin cuffed in Spain

BornToWin

It's all good

Some more scumbags bite the dust and a lot of illegal money now belongs to authorities. I'll bet there are a lot of puckered arses right about now and one way booked flights.

Bill Gates: Corporate tax is not a moral issue

BornToWin

Not to worry

Bill Gates has no morals IMO and wouldn't know what they are if you splained it to 'em.

How God and übergeek Ron Crane saved 3Com's bacon

BornToWin

It's unfortunate...

...that quality engineering, design and manufacturing is so under appreciated. Instead rushed to market, half-baked CRAP is what CEO's want so that they can get their $700 Million dollar annual compensation package while using Chinese slave labor to produce their products. Think: Tim Cook.

PC market facing worst-ever slump in 2013

BornToWin

Win 8 sucks...

...but the real problem is a worldwide economic meltdown that has not recovered and looks to continue perhaps for another five years. While a few industries or players in a particular industry such as cell phones or new car sales are doing fine, most industries are in the toilet and it may get worse before it get's better. I see companies that have been in existence for 20-30-40 years closing their doors forever. This undermines the entire economy and it's a worldwide issue including Europe, the U.S. and Asia, so it's a big deal to say the least.

Forget the word 'cyberwar' says Marcus Ranum

BornToWin

Of course somebody can win

The bad guys are winning because they are stealing billions of dollars in money and goods, stealing other people's identities and personal info., disrupting business and government ops, etc. So yes the Crims are winning the war and everyone with a clue should be outraged and supporting all efforts to convict these cyber crims.

Imagine that...PC sales have dropped during a world wide economic depression. DUH.

Now it gets serious: Fracking could RUIN BEER

BornToWin

Fracking needs to be fully controlled

The oil industry does whatever it feels like unless monitored 24/7. Laws mean nothing to most oil companies so governments may need to limit exactly where oil companies can and can not use fracking. At the insane prices being charged for crude oil products, i.e. blackmail, there is no need to allow the oil Cabal to ruin the natural water supply.

Internet cafés declared 'illegal businesses' in Ohio

BornToWin

No legitimate internet cafe is being hurt

As usual the knee-jerk reaction by the liberals skews the story to make authorities the bad guys for enforcing law. This is ypical unscrupulous shilling for crims.

Legitmate internet cafes are not hurt at all by this new law. Spewing ignorance about this law isn't going to change reality. These cafes are operating illegally and they should be closed. If they want to run casinos they can go through the proper licensing and regulations that legit casinos have done.

'Catastrophic failure' of 3D-printed gun in Oz Police test

BornToWin

Two fold safety risk

The first possible safety risk is if the gun is actually able to fire. The second risk is if the bullet does fire, then the gun is certain to explode injuring any damn fool dumb enough to try and fire this form of 3D gun.

Did Kim Dotcom invent 2-factor authentication? Er, not exactly...

BornToWin

What a con artist this jerk is

Anyone who would change their legal name to Dotcom is a jerk and his claim of inventing two-factor authentication process is absurd.

Kim Dotcom claims invention of two-factor authentication

BornToWin

What a piece or work or other substance...

Kim Dotcom is quite the whackjob and very delusional.

Computer use irrelevant to education outcomes, says US study

BornToWin

It's sad

It's sad that educational administrators are oblivious to the reality that PCs are just another tool often used as a toy and thus never achieving the desired educational value. Many school systems lack the resources to hire quality teachers or pay reasonable salaries yet they find money to buy PCs. In the end we still have a large percentage of students who graduate without much of a clue in the very basics of education.

Intel's answer to ARM: Customisable x86 chips with HIDDEN POWERS

BornToWin

Intel is getting desperate

With AMD's customized APUs winning all three gaming consoles plus a lot of other market segments including some that use ARM chippies, Intel has fallen behind by several years. It's good to see AMD deliver better tech at lower prices.

Apple chief Cook: You - senators. Get in here and redo this tax law

BornToWin

How laughable

Dictates and shilling for a larger CEO bonus by a man who uses Chinese slave labor to receive $700 Million in annual compensation. They'll listen to him about as much as they do to Bill Gates when he says that Microsucks needs to be able to hire more low wage green card holders so that they won't need to pay fair compensation to capable U.S. citizens looking to earn a decent living. Many big corporation CEOs are so evil...

Financial firms start lining up for AMD Roadrunner systems

BornToWin

This will help

These units will help enterprise and AMD. A 50+ % drop in cost with equal or better performance depending on the application, is a good thing.

'LulzSec leader's' victim named: tiny Oz council

BornToWin

What a joke

Every hacker, pirate and DDoS initiator is innocent until proven guilty. The evidence usually proves they did the crime and were not "set up". We'll see how this plays out in court. If he's convicted I hope he does spend 12 years in prison. Japan has the correct solution to digital crime with mandatory prison sentences and high fines. If these people are dumb enough to commit digital crimes then they belong in prison with the other dumbarse criminals.

40,000 Chinese workers say low-cost iPhone coming soon

BornToWin

I'm sure Tim Cook needs another bonus

Ya know $700 million annual compensation just doesn't go as far as it use to... If those Chinese slaves would just work 16 hours per day, 6 days a week instead of just 14 hours per day, then Timmy could get another $700 M or larger annual bonues. I hope there is a Hell and that all who exploit humans end up in Hell for eternity. I'm guessing maybe Bill Gates will be there to great the newbies.

3D printed gun plans pulled after US State Department objects

BornToWin

Maybe the Feds should not object

With any luck these plastic toys will explode and take out the perps using them. Then there won't be any need to find and prosecute the scum.

Seagate: Who us... no flash cred? Check out our PCIe card, suckers

BornToWin

I'm still waiting

I'm still waiting for fast PCIe flash cards at affordable prices for desktop PCs, not servers. This is a no brainer since most desktops have an unused PCIe socket. The performance easily exceeds the best SSD and it should costs the same or less to produce.

Coke? Windows 8 is Microsoft's 'Vista moment'. Again

BornToWin

It would be great

...to see Win 8 bring Microsucks to it's knees financially. Then maybe they could buy a clue?

Acronis co-founder slips into driving seat after CEO picks up P45

BornToWin

Works for me

I've used Acronis True Image for several years and never had any issues with it. I think they sell a quality product, IME.

Senate passes Marketplace Fairness Act by wide margin

BornToWin

They completely missed the point

Most consumers don't shop online to escaped being raped by state criminals looking to tax everyone even when it's inappropriate or illegal.

The reason most people purchase online is because of convenience, product choice, information and a hassle free experience. Just as outlawing guns won't stop crime, taxing online sales is not going to help local merchants who do not stock the products consumers desire, who do not provide quality service, who do not sell at competitive prices and who make the purchasing experience unenjoyable at a minimum and frequently more of a real hassle. This new legislation will just exploit consumers even more than they are already being raped by the criminals currently in office.

Dept o' Labor says US created more jobs than it thought this spring

BornToWin

Next month...

...they'll revise the data downwards but it will never be reported by mainstream media. They do this month after month after month to try and dupe the naive and gullible.

Ask those who have been unemployed for 1-2-3 years if the employment situation has improved. The Feds actually stop counting the unemployed once their benefits expire which is typically 12-18 months. After that you don't exists as far as the Feds are concerned so naturally unemployment figures drop unless even more people become unemployed at the rate of those falling off the unemployment rolls. For those lucky enough to find a job, ask them how much their salary decreased and if the new job is in the field they are trained in. The employment situation in the U.S., Europe and Asia is terrible and not improving much at all.

Lehman Brothers sues Intel over a billion dollar deal

AMD reveals potent parallel processing breakthrough

BornToWin

AMD is definitely forward thinking

This development has been in process since 2006 and it's finally starting to come to fruation. It's great to see AMD leading the next big PC performance improvement. They may have had their troubles over the years, no thanks to Intel's illegal practices, but at least AMD continues to deliver the best value products for consumers.

I personally will be buying a Kaveri powered laptop as soon as they are available for purchase. Kaveri should offer a dramatic improvement in APU performance allowing AMD to then offer mid-range and high-end desktop solutions that equal current and future discrete CPU/GPU systems, but at a lower cost with lower power consumption. It's all good for consumers.

Police arrest suspect in BIGGEST DDoS ATTACK IN HISTORY

BornToWin

Re: Treble damages and prison time is due

You're confused...about many things including DDoS. It can cost millions to fix the problems, investigate the perps, locate and seize the perps, develop the court case and prosecute the perps, convict and incarcerate the perps - after multiple appeals. Not only does the company and it's customers sustain losses, so do tax payers.

Punishment is not an exchange of value or compensation for the financial loss. If you rob a bank and then give the money back when you are caught, you still go to prison for 7-10 years in most locals. Cyber crimes should be treated no differently. Japan has the correct approach with mandatory prison sentences and fines for pirates, hackers and facilitators of piracy. That approach needs to be adopted world wide for all cyber crimes.

AMD pins future growth to embedded marketplace

BornToWin

AMD is generating new revenue sources

These SoCs have a broad market application and AMD already has contracts so it's all good IMO. AMD has a lot of good new products coming to market all at once with Kaveri, Richland, these SoCs, some new discrete GPUs and Steamroller for desktop is not too far off. Everyone of these products should prove to be a good value and performance proposition, which is what OEMs and mainstream consumers look for.

Japanese Feds urge ISPs to support Tor ban plan

SanDisk '2-3 years' away from mass-producing 3D flash chips

BornToWin

2-3 years away would not be 2013 as the story sub-title claims

The problem with stacked ICs is heat concentration and insufficient cooling. The failure rate also increases meaning unit costs increase. We'll see how this all shakes out down the road.
