First iPhone X fondlers struggle to admit that Face ID sort of sucks

Re: Sounds like my S8 and facial recognition

I actually moved to iris recognition and it works significantly better. The only problem I have found with it is when my glasses are filthy (which my kids ensure happens lots). But i do not need to be holding the phone in any unnatural way to make it work, it just does.

Re: Upgrade cycle

I'm in that minority. The Galaxy S6 has everything I need in a phone and combined with an unlimited data sim only contract and google drive, storage is not an issue. The battery is reasonably good, the screen is great. It has an IR blaster which I use often (and is missing from the S7) and the camera holds its own. I am clean out of compelling reasons to replace this phone with anything else on the market.

It has replaced an S4 which is still a very capable handset except it seems to have an issue with its sim card slot. But, thats no problem. It has instead become a very capable media remote for the home and lives in the lounge, replacing multiple remotes and working with chromecasts etc etc. It has its own google account which is part of my Google family set up and if i'm really really pushed to use it as a phone, Skype fills the void.

Basically I have stopped looking at the phone in the way the industry wants me to and just see it as another computer like my laptop or PC.

Re: People have been saying this would happen for years

Tizen 3.0 is aimed at other devices like wearables and TVs and IoT things because it didn't compete against IOS/Android.

I think if Samsung make a success of the platform in these areas, they will revisit the mobile phone market and have a stronger position from which to compete.

Christopher Rogers

Still using my S4 and have yet to find a compelling handset to replace it with. Battery is crap, but i've learnt to adjust and its made of plastic, but then so is the Speck case on it that hides the entire device bar the screen. Even if i were to get a swanky metal and glass upgrade, it would be hidden by the plastic cover.

There's NOTHING on TV in Europe – American video DOMINATES

Christopher Rogers

Re: You jest!

Thats the point of a national broadcaster - show the stuff that wouldn't be commercially viable for private television broadcasters.

European TV is GRIM. About 5 layers of suits need to be taken out of television management in the UK so channels like 2 and 4 can start producing more properly off the wall shows.

America has the advantage because it can mass produce english language television and every now and then it gets it right.

I'd love to know why you think microsoft are so far behind??? - because market data.

Get a reality check!! - really?

I had written a longer answer, but since you seem to be incoherent, I'll stop here.

Christopher Rogers

still behind.

Well, she's saying all the right things, but still hasn't addressed the core problem for MS in the mobile world - they are playing catchup and an 18 month delay to pulling their mobile OSes together is not good enough. Android and IOS will have progressed further in that time and any number of competitors could be in the market by then. MS are essentially saying its going to take them nearly another 2 years to join Apple and Google in their ongoing dual OS strategy, a poor show from a software house majoring on OSes....

While the BBC drools over Twitter, look what UK's up to: Hospital superbug breakthrough

Christopher Rogers

Ooooh Shiny shiny

I cannot for the life of me see what Twitter can offer to an investor outside of the potential to throw advertisements at people. Surely at 26$ a share, the price is going to collapse. Facebook didn't exactly cover itself in glory with its IPO last year, but unlike Twitter (which I like and use by the way) it is not a 1 trick pony. So a handful of people get mega rich and everyone else gets commercials in their feed and thats it.

The rise of Whatsapp et al and the continued existence of Facebook and Google + surely puts the value of Twitter at serious risk?

Maybe thats where Blackberry are going wrong? They should just sell everything and become Blackberry Messenger and directly rival Twitter?

I wish I owned Twitter. I'd be minted today.

Apple CEO Tim Cook v Microsoft's Ballmer: Seconds out, round two!

Christopher Rogers

All of which makes Apple the expensive version of google.

I am aware of MS's cloud integration. But my argument is this:

Today I can go out and buy a laptop branded with Apple or Google's logo, running their "free" operating system and make use of their "free" productivity apps and store my work on their integrated cloud storage.

The price of this with Google starts at £199. With Apple its £849.

I know you can do additional stuff with OSX, but on the basis of what the majority do i.e. internetting, some multimedia, mail and a couple of documents, Google provide the better option.

Christopher Rogers

With Apple giving away its OS, Google Chrome suddenly makes a hell of alot of sense. Outside of their own chromebook, any device with web access and a variant of Chrome browser does the exact same thing. So really with taking aim at Microsoft, surely Apple have just positioned themselves as an expensive Google?

Here comes Windows 8.1! Microsoft grits teeth, pushes upgrade to world

Christopher Rogers

Re: It could have been so good... :(

Its also why Linux has not been taken on by the masses - fragmentation. Multiple versions multiple interfaces. Its main strength is also its main weakness - people need a consistent experience (hence the uproar going Win7 to Win 8).

Christopher Rogers

Well for all the blood sweat and tears, I like it. It feels like the product Windows 8 should have been originally, but now its here, it feels like a decent OS. It boots straight to desktop, the start screen is very customisable and the Skydrive integration is much better.

The return of the start button is f**king pointless however.

Christopher Rogers

Re: It could have been so good... :(

"Microsoft for some reason wants to be the beginning and the end of computing each time someone invents or unlocks a market "

Apple make all the hardware and software and you cannot use OSX on NON-Apple hardware (but you can run Windows on Apple machines) Lets remember, MS make software (regardless of if you like how it looks) that runs on shedloads of devices, including the most frankenstein of homebuild PCs.

Linux provides this service too, however looking at the Linux posterboy Ubuntu, they are now trying to emulate Microsoft, putting Unity across every device type and trying to tie it all together. Eventually, they will have to try and monetize their efforts for the existing investment (time, money) to have longevity.

And Google and their Chrome OS. They provide a nice twist to the conversation in that you pretty much get the OS experience by using the Chrome browser and a gmail account.

And lets not forget 1 thing - this lot are in business to make money. They are going to try and grab as much of their industry as possible to make as healthy a profit as possible.

Christopher Rogers

Re: Its the UI changes that kill it for me...

Windows 8.1 - Put a shortcut to the browser on the desktop and tick the "boot to desktop" option that bypasses the menu screen. And anyways - with the applications being represented by big icons and bright colours, surely this is a better option for grandma??

Christopher Rogers

Re: Still not enough

"it is easy to see why they have lost their old position as the de facto OS and software supplier of choice."
