While I agree with the sentiment, from what I remember reading the hammer didn’t cost $600 it was part of a bulk equipment and spare part purchase brought for a few thousand and the ‘bean counters’ just allocated each item as costing $600 to make things simple, I think the quote went

As for the toilet seat, that was to replace a broken toilet in a submarine that had to be a certain spec (I’m guessing size, weight, noise reduction, etc), as they didn’t make those toilets anymore, , the money wasn’t on just buying a new toilet seat, it was on the R&D of more or less reinvent the toilet seat.

Well, you sir have never been to Belfast.
As someone who is from Belfast and grew up there in the 70s and 80s I can tell you first hand that I did not know a single person who did not have a friend or family member “harmed” by the IRA, Real IRA, PIRA, or any of the other groups, and I am sure if I had been born on the other side of the wall the same could be said for people harmed by the UVF, UDA or any of the Loyalist groups also supported by the US, for your information there has been two bombings just in Belfast city center, THIS WEEK.
In simple terms Northern Ireland has a population of around 1.8 million, more than 3,600 people were killed during the worst of the troubles and many more since then.
In other words, in todays figures that would be 1 out of every 500 people killed by terrorists, and that’s just killed, not to mention all the knee capping’s, burns from petrol bombs, and other injuries both physical and mentally as a result of just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
If I remember the US lost less 3,000 people on 9/11, that’s less than 0.001% of your population, and you invaded another country over that.

Stuff is not free, you buy a TV, pay the licence, get Sky, Virgin, whatever, pay for that, and you can watch the TV show, if you don’t want to pay for these things then you don’t get the end result, its pretty simple, the Daily Show is not free to make, it’s not a hobby, it’s not a right, people have to make money from it to have the incentive to show it on their channel.
The BBC can show TV programs on the interwebs because they get the money anyway, Channel 4 limits what it shows and advertises the balls out of it, and ITV, well, I don’t think I have watched anything other than football on ITV so god knows what they do.

UAV’s have their uses and place in both recon and battle deployment, as stated before (on another thread) it makes no difference to someone if they get blown up by a ground attack aircraft a few miles away, from missile launched from a ship hundreds of miles away or by a drone a few hundred feet above them being controlled by someone in another country, and while people try and argue it takes the human element away or such nonsense (because someone watching a screen and pressing a button in a helicopter or a ship is more empathetic than someone watching a screen pressing a button in a bunker?) it’s like arguing artillery is ‘unfair’.
The main difference with a drone, apart from the operator is in a better position to judge the target to be correct and there is less time for the situation to change between the time it takes to press the button and the target to be hit, if it gets shot down it just costs money, not the life of the operator.The people the UAVs target will get killed one way or another, the ‘drone’ is just in place of a more expensive and less ‘controlled’ way of killing them.
In my mind the value of a life outweighs the cost of a UAV, it also hardly compares to the cost of a life, in terms of supplies, training, transport etc etc, using drones for the purposes the UN state not only make it cheaper and easier to carry out these observation tasks, but it also doesn’t put the person controlling it in anything like the danger faced by a guy in a helicopter or boots on the ground.

Or in other words, you cant sue a company for breaching an agreement if you dont actully know what is in the agreement and are just ‘guessing’
I borrowed from a company like Wonga (I won’t say the name as I don’t want to be accused of being a ‘shrill’) once, back in my students days as I needed to get over to Ireland for a funeral and wouldn’t have been paid in time, I borrowed £200, after 5 days (the 4th day being the day I got paid) I paid them £215, to me £15 didn’t seem that much of a cost to have £200 in my account early and allow me to get the flight, in fact it was half the charge I would had received in overdraft fees from my bank, regardless of it being £2, £20 or £200.
As I said I only used them once, but these loans are supposed to be one off short term jobs, if you have to borrow £350 and can’t pay over the best part of a month, chances are you shouldn’t be getting the loan in the first place, let alone a new games console, but if it wasn’t for them I would have been stuck and rather than any mismanaging of my finances (as little as they were at the time) as I was easily able to pay for it, it was a question of timing.
Once again it comes down to having a level of responsibility; a £15 charge in my opinion is pretty good for the service, but there is no way I would use, or advise others to use a company like that for anything more than a couple of days.
The companies tell you how much they will charge, you agree when they will take the money out, they tell you what happens if you can’t pay, they even had contact information for free debt advice, if someone ignores all of that and still takes out a loan they know they cannot afford and have no intention of being able to pay it without another loan, then that is not the companies fault it is theirs.
Better to educate people in how to manage their money they ban services that others (like in my case) are able to use without any issues and for a valid reason

The game is not suitable for children, that’s why it says so on the front of the game I wouldn’t let a young child play GTA any more than I would let them watch Scarface, read a Stephen King novel, smoke a cigar, drive a car or do shots of Vodka, I however being more than 18 years old am the target audience and who the game is designed for, you child can play games that are aimed at them, World of War Craft being one of the games mentioned is rated for teenagers, a bit like a 12A film, again, I wouldn’t let a young child play it, but for a 13 (and 23, 33, 43 etc) year old it’s a good way to develop the skills mentioned in the article, at the same time being entertaining and engrossing.

Just like 9/11 parts of American public (and wider) have a hard time accepting that it only takes a few determined people to change history, they would rather it be some cover up involving a well-oiled secret scary conspiracy then a couple of nutters, or in this case one guy with a gun, because to them its incomprehensible that these things can happen and are not controlled by a higher power, be it the government, or god.

I don’t have problems with allocating time to achieve a task, it makes sense, but down to a number of seconds over a number of hours seems a bit much, I mean, can you imagine having to say to your partner “I didn’t get full pay because I missed my target today, I sneezed and then blew my nose at 14:34 and that put me out by 6.7 seconds”
Pretty sure that’s the way they do things in Argos, Tescos, and other places they have huge warehouses, the problem with being ‘timed’ to achieve a task, in this case down to the second, is it does put stress on anyone, you can work it out and say its only 40 yards a minute, but you forgetting the few seconds it takes to find item, scan item, place item on trolley and check next item, (I’m assume they don’t return after collecting each item and basically fill the trolley before returning?) while this might only take say 10 seconds, that’s still 1/3 of your allocated time, and not all items will only be 40 yards away in a straight line.
Of course you have to make sure that the d̶r̶o̶n̶e̶s̶ workers are not slacking, but maybe a bonus for doing over a target instead of a counting clock would be better, otherwise spending 2 seconds more looking for a small item in a shelve full of identical items impacts the time for each item for the rest of your day.
I know from a friend who used to drop off the deliveries for a large British supermarket (the green one) that these where allocated a time down to the minute as well, which was even more unrealistic as each day there would be someone who had parked their car in a way so his van couldn’t get past, or an accident, or road works, or anything else that could affect the time that of course cannot be factored by a computer, they had something like 4 minutes given for ‘customer interaction’ which was the dropping off of the load, the checking, the signing, etc, but you could spend that much waiting for the door to be answered, avoiding a dog, finding the correct house or helping an elderly or disabled person take the shopping into the kitchen and unpacking it for them (if you were nice that is), that’s if the customer was in at all.
Needless to say apparently few of the other vans accumulated scraps, bumps and even speeding tickets to meet the demands

After googleing the image I think it is completely possible to figure out what is going on, an obvious police car parked up, a couple of people in dark matching tops, trousers and hats a few meters away from the car in a group, (uniforms considering the proximity of the police car) some of them looking towards another person with the same dark matching uniform standing a few meters away facing a figure in non matching lighter coloured clothing lying sprawled awkwardly on the ground, in the next image from a different angle the person looking at the figure on the ground is now walking away towards the car leaving the figure in the same position.
