Boffin's claim: I have found how to get girls into tech

Anonymous Blowhard
WTF?

Re: Big deal, I can get tech into girls ..

"Some people can do IT some people cant"

Maybe, but this isn't the problem; the problem is that around 50% of the people who *COULD* "do IT" don't want to because it doesn't appeal to them based on what they perceive in the media.

"highlighting which race/gender/age group is not doing their bit is not helpful"

WTF? What do you mean "not doing their bit"? The problem isn't that some genders or racial groups are "not doing their bit " but that some genders or racial groups don't want to others in their club; perhaps they think that these genders or racial groups aren't capable of "doing their bit"? maybe they think that the other genders or racial groups are inferior?

Highlighting where there are significant differences in gender or racial diversity is a pointer to where prejudice and barriers may exist; or are you saying that we should preserve the status quo? Women have been an underclass since Eve was blamed for us being kicked out of Eden, non-whites have been exploited and even traded like cattle because white men had the edge over them in technology; pretending we're all treated equally now and don't need to tackle prejudice is a massive fallacy.

Re: I wonder...

"you made sure to include a section in the contract what the person can and cannot do with the information he acquired during his job"

There's always a section like this in your contract; even if it isn't there explicitly it is implied when a document has "Company Confidential" written on it.

You can't, 100%, stop your employees from stealing from you; most company IT "security" is just to stop them doing bone-headed stuff like installing key-loggers while they're surfing the internet looking for a new job that lets them use their own kit.

Microsoft waves white flag: We'll put Outlook on Windows RT slabs

Re: people want the power of Outlook on all their Windows PCs and tablets

I once got a copy of Outlook bundled with a Dell Axim X51v; but you're right, MS see Outlook as a "business product" and want business-level cash for it (like how they charge several hundred notes for Office with Outlook and less than a hundred for Office without it).

'Liberator': Proof that you can't make a working gun in a 3D printer

Anonymous Blowhard
Stop

"3D printing at the moment is basically pretty useless."

No it isn't; I've seen some great work done with 3D printers for producing prototype parts, test jigs (to make sure that supplier parts are the correct shape), and for use in mould making.

The airheads who see 3D printing as a manufacturing technique are probably going to be disappointed, but for real engineers 3D printing is another valuable tool for the design process.

Well said; I'm a middle-aged geezer who can't play a note with a teenage son who's an excellent musician (electronic keyboard and saxophone). The last concert evening I attended at his school showed that there are far more children playing instruments today than during my time at school in the 70s and 80s; my 80+ father-in-law (himself an accomplished pianist) agreed.

Gartner: RIP PCs - tablets will CRUSH you this year

Anonymous Blowhard

Re: Tablets will continue

I think the demand for tablets, and other portable devices, will continue to rise in line with improved capabilities; at the moment the desktop PC doesn't really need to be any better than it already is in order to satisfy most people's requirements (obviously there will always be a small community pushing the envelope and demanding better PCs, but not the mainstream).

Tablets, on the other hand, do need to get better (usability in daylight, battery life etc.) and as they are more likely to be carried around day-to-day, thrown in bags etc., there is more wear-and-tear than on desktops so there will be demand for improved devices and for replacement devices.

Re: where i live

Winter tyres are optimised for low temperatures and speeds; at higher temperatures and speeds they will just wear out really fast. Some designs of winter tyre also use metal studs, these are not good for roads if there's no snow or ice (like 80% of the UK winter)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_tires

The problem with the UK is that, in winter, one day it's -5C and the next it's +10C; and there is rarely a solid covering of snow. So it's not practical to fit a winter tyre. You'd end up having to swap tyres twice a week or halfway through a journey from North to South (or vice versa depending on which half has snow).

I work for a Scandinavian company, and the places where it is compulsory to fit winter tyres have constant low temperatures and snow coverage for extended periods of the year.
