I nearly went to Kepler-1984 but....
The EasyJet flight landed no where near the planet and the bus took eons.

I was once on a plane to Turkey a few years ago when a two legged women got drunk and tried to open the door at 35,000ft and pished herself (must have been the pressure). Turned out she was banned from flying for doing the exact same thing the previous year. I thought I'd never she her again as she's be spending sometime in a nice Turkish prison. Turned out she was on the return flight after a great holiday and was again pissed.

Has you PC Speakers never chattered with Mobile phone interference ? This is the phone inferring with a subsystem within the PC (TV or radio) most likely the sound card. Now if you could develop this so it developed a buffer overrun on the sound system you might be able to inject data or code into the computer its self.
You also have to remember that Mobile phones are computers with a very broad RF broadcast range; so if you can find a common or range of common subsystems that can be targeted that chances are that they use the same chipsets such as USB, BlueTooth, Wifi, Ethernet. Just because they is no configuration of a sub system (eg network, wifi, IR) does not mean it is not powered, working and more importantly service by the OS.
Also think of other attack vectors such as a picture on a web site can inject code in to the client OS (very common).

"Apple stuff is supported for longer and tends to get used or passed on an used for years."
Eh....No this is complete rubbish. Apple do selective upgrades so your older iPads / Macs can't install any of the software / apps in their store. The older versions of which will work on this kits is not available on their app store.
Governments around the world make a very healthy income selling RF space to mobile companies;. And what if the said governments don't want an effective spy network over their lands.
The current Tory government in blighty (no its not a coalition, if you think it is; your just kidding yourself on) will no doubt say "YES" as Google has better access to no 10 than the current Tech gov department.
