Oh snap: AWS has only gone and brought out its own Backup

UnkDB

Am I missing something?

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/EBSSnapshots.html says "Snapshots are incremental backups..." so if my application is in AWS, why do I need another backup?

If they were offering me the ability (and I think they are) to backup my on-prem to an off-site facility (the so called cloud), I kind of get it.

Shocker: UK smart meter rollout is crap, late and £500m over budget

UnkDB

Remind me of the benefit for me?

I can probably save more that £18 by switching provider every year; but in doing so, the chance of the installed smart meter continuing to act smart is low (MoneySavingExpert suggests as possibly being as low as 1.2%).

What most people think it looks like when you change router's admin password, apparently

Do I get a lollypop?

I use BT for broadband and Sky for TV.

Last week Sky engineer installed Sky Q.

1. Went straight to my router and pulled out the card to connect his iPad to my Wi-Fi. Was most upset when I told him I had changed SID and password. Connected him via WPS...not sharing my password with a stranger (yes, I know it's not the admin one).

2. When connecting the Sky Q - I asked him to used the Ethernet cable that was sitting there waiting for him. He's been told he should use Wi-Fi and has never plugged an Ethernet cable into a Q box; and said I might even have to revert to Wi-Fi if I have support problems.

Duh? Why else would they have an Ethernet port or configuration options in the software?

BT, Sky bury hatchet with deal to sell each other's telly channels

UnkDB

I pay way too much money at the moment for football coverage from both BT and SKY.

Hopefully, because I currently have the "all the Sky I can eat" deal, the BT channels will get absorbed into that and I won't be paying extra form BT Sport and extra on top of that for BT Sport HD.

But I bet they still manage to screw me over somehow.

Microsoft: Office 2013 license is for just one PC, FOREVER

Who's at the front door now?

I installed 2013 two weeks ago. Last week the hardware suffered a major failure and I am buying a new system. I intend to physically transfer the hard disk from one machine to another. I am not re-installing software. But by reading the statement I would technically still be in breach.

If MS want it removed, they are welcome to make an appointment to come to my house at a mutually convenient time to perform the un-install.
