Navy engineer gets 11 years for attempted espionage

M7S

Just curious,

Is this espionage, or treason?

I assumed the former is something done against another country than one's own, and that by virtue of being "in the navy" (to quote the song, just in time for it to bug you all weekend) and having access to NOFORN documents this person would be a US citizen and thus perhaps committing the latter.

Possible use, with some upgrades

If it could return to a charging base every so often, could it be a little security guard that wanders around your house, phoning you/your alarm service/whatever with video if it sees something not matching the patterns it expects/saw last time, and allowing you to have a two way talk if appropriate?

The icon may indicate other upgrades that readers may elect to fit, local laws permitting of course.

Re: Door mirrors...

There's another advantage of mirrors over CCTV.

If you're filtering (lane-splitting for readers in North America) then you can sometimes look the driver in the eye and know that s/he's seen you and possibly understand who's going to pull away first, reducing chances of an accident, or if you don't make eye contact, then you know to play safe.

Re: And we need this for..

Its all a plot by the secret world government.

There used to be warnings on TV where heroes like No. 6* or the ladies in that allergy research clinic in OHMSS would be hypnotised by a flashing light (often with a spinning spiral pattern added).

Now these things are going to be installed in our homes and controlled by the lizards.

Strangely such warnings seem to have vanished from our screens in recent decades. It's a conspiracy I tell you, a conspiracy!

Doctor Who returns to our screens next week – so, WHO is the worst Time Lord of them all?

M7S

Re: Just thinking...

For Old Who at less than the extortionate prices for the DVDs, try The Horror Channel (Freeview 70) which is currently running most of them in some sort of order, mind you we're reaching The Mark of the Rani so it may all come to a halt soon as I suspect they've not purchased "new who", but its around two episodes each weekday morning with a repeat of those each afternoon as well. Hopefully it will loop back to what remains on tape of the early doctors when they finish but that remains to be seen.

They used to do compilations (out of order) on a Sunday but they seem not to have run for a few weeks.

UK.gov claims 'success' over SME broadband scheme

M7S

Dodgy offers

We received a number of ethically questionable offers to use this as an inducement to switch providers (we are already connected). For our remote locations, if it wasn't in an area already covered by decent provision and just requiring a hook up, then either the offering entity was not interested, seeking an "easy job" with the chance to raise the price by most of the cost of the subsidy, or the overall cost was still too high.

I suspect a large amount of this money has ended up padding the accounts of providers of snake oil.

On this basis, should a burglar find that your house door/window locks are easily jemmied, or perhaps that you've left it unlocked while you pop next door for a few minutes, I assume you wouldn't mind if s/he rummages around your house for anything interesting?

There's probably a better analogy involving someone cracking and using your home wifi and causing your Netflix to keep buffering as they use your bandwidth, but regardless of issues around the use of contract terms, theft on the basis of insufficient security is still theft.

US to stage F-35-versus-Warthog bake-off in 2018

M7S

How survivable is the F35?

I recall reading an article on the A10 decades ago that stated it could survive the loss of one engine, and reasonable portions of the wing and/or tail surfaces and remain flyable, possibly even partially combat effective. Also that the pilot was protected by a bathtub of heavy metal (perhaps not in the nuclear sense) and the flight controls had redundancy built in, which was also pretty simple to fix in the field.

If this is true, how "delicate" is the F35 by comparison, insofar as we civilians are able to reliably know?
