Cryptomining groups fight fiercely for cloud resources

Graeme5

Crypto is a waste of power

The idea that securing something with a block chain secured by mining which equals CPU power, which equals electricity is such an environmental nightmare.

It's literally a race to burn as much electrical power as possible for cash. I can't believe Greenpeace or similar are not protesting every crypto currency constantly.

It would be nice to have some electronic cash that could be trusted and traded freely but it's not worth the energy input of this system.

First rule of Ransomware Club is do not pay the ransom, but it looks like Carlson Wagonlit Travel didn't get the memo

Graeme5

I was just thinking paying a ransome is funding organised crime / terrorism. It should be illegal.

FIlter Articles

Hi, sorry if this has been asked a thousand times... but...

I read the register most days but every so often I get to the bottom of an article which has completely missed the mark and stated nothing more than the blinding obvious. It's really disappointing as most articles are actually worth reading.

Feature suggestion

There may be solution though, interestingly all these articles are labeled with a marker of such drivel. Specifically at the bottom of each is a picture of a man(?) and the name "Alistair Dabbs" Is there a way I can filter my El Reg experience so that this doesn't occur, maybe a hide "Alistair Dabbs" button, I'm sure I could do this on facebook.

I look forward to this feature and will keep checking the homepage for my new button, please put it in a prominent position, its a very important button.

Thanks

Prime95 - still?

"Using Prime95...". Really, why not Linpack? For intel CPU's I have always found Linpack (or the linx gui for linpack) much more reliable and faster to find any instability.

Scariest NSA revelation yet: Spooks are RUBBISH at CIPHERS

the "y" is in error, the nsa tweet said "our nation", el reg didn't check the translation apparently!

Re: So to get the job

To get the job you plant your resume on their server.

Graeme5

Dohh

Tip, when making fun of how "lame" a simple a puzzle is, try to get the answer right. (two words missing and one letter extra)!!!

Reg Article:

“want to know what it takes to work at nsa? check back each monday as we explore careers essential to protecting your nation.”

Actual:

“want to know what it takes to work at nsa? check back each monday in may as we explore careers essential to protecting our nation.”

Windows 8.1, which you probably haven't upgraded to yet, Already obsolete

Graeme5

So people who have turned Automatic Updates off (to manual) will not get future updates. Sounds about right, isn't that what you'd expect?

The only trap some people may fall into I guess is if they have disabled 'hidden' Windows 8.1 Update after the initial issues, now even if they have automatic updates on they won't get them.

Micro USB may be ok, but it was never designed for charging devices, what a shame they didn't pick something better.

Also (an no I haven't read the spec) but surely apple just need to add a microUSB socket in addition to its own superior connectors. Just wire in the 5v from the usb to charge the device, even if it charges slower. its just a shame it won't be as clean a design.

Hey Linux newbie: If you've never had a taste, try perfect Petra ... mmm, smells like Mint 16

going for record downvotes... deep breath...

or you could just buy a 'finished' product like Windows or OSX and stop wasting time with linux desktops.

Three uses for Linux Desktops:

- Administering linux servers

- Cybercafe / kiosk

- Script kiddies

- People too tight to buy something competent

note: linux on embedded devices and servers is where it works best. Desktop GUI just doesn't.

Windows 8 and TIKFAM

Windows 8 is a perfectly good OS, it boots faster and runs smoother than 7 on similar hardware and it runs anything Windows 7 did (almost). Sure there are glitches in updates, just look it iOS7, that's not new and it won't stop happening anytime soon. If you're a serious business user just hold off 6 months on major changes and it'll be fine. There is only a little over 6 years left on Windows 7's support lifecycle... I sell to plenty of business who think 6 years is a minimum hardware lifespan, not maximum.

TIKFAM is weird and takes some practice. Sure it makes more sense on a touch screen but it works well enough to launch a program. There are limited numbers of good apps in the store... so ignore it. If TIKFAM bothers you so much just install StartIsBack and never see TIKFAM again, really it works just like 7, you would barely notice.

PS: My laptop is affected by the mouse issues, the touchpad has stopped responding twice since I installed 8.1, but it reboots in under 20 seconds... really it wasn't the end of the world.

Lavabit, secure email? Hardly, says infosec wizard Moxie Marlinspike

Graeme5

Popular secure email service is a misnoma

If you use a well known 'secure' email provider like Lavabit used to advertise its self as then you are right in the spotlight of NSA types - shouting I have something to hide and I store my email here!

How secure any system is is almost impossible to assess as an outsider, even with unknown private keys you couldn't know if there was an intentional weakness in the implementation, or if the provider was actually an NSA funded front.

You'd probably be better to run your own little system on some obscure hosting provider. Sure if you were targeted you could have a problem but if you use a popular provider you can be sure you will be targeted. Even if your email is secure you will be identifiable as someone with somthing to hide.

All good web developers know what works properly in which browser. If Google wanted to work properly in IE it would.

Intel's new TV box to point creepy spy camera at YOUR FACE

Graeme5
Go

All for it

I am quite happy to be identified by my face... it happens all the time every day. Why shouldn't my TV be able to do it.

Obviously as well as learning what I watch it could read my mood. I have seen software projects that can do this... so when I am 10 mins in to another TopGear on Dave it could speak up and say... "you look board, how about watching The Matrix on Film4?

That would be cool.

So long as it didn't read my post over my shoulder I would be completely fine with this.
