Ditch tape and fly into the public cloud with us, beams bullish Actifio

This release is about cheaper resiliency and faster availability. No one can match it.

"Marketing BS" aside, Chris, backups stored in tapes and dedup appliances are useful for only one thing: Doing restores when you need them. And when you do those restores, they take a long time to do. With tape those restores may not even work. And while dedup appliances are good for a few months of retention, using them for multi year SLAs gets very expensive very very fast.

Actifio also has its own deduplication technology, and it's also great for a few months of retention. The economics get a lot better when you store data for multiple years in object storage, though, whether in the cloud or on prem.

Even more, Actifio is uniquely able to provide instant access to that data in object storage. So you can not only protect that data more cost effectively, you can actually USE it instantly when you need it, for things like on-demand analytics, data warehousing, media streaming, or fast data integrity checks.

None of the other solutions you mentioned can deliver both those economics and that availability. With these new features, Actifio can.

Re: So what about the rest of my environment?

You should check out Actifio. First and only enterprise-class data virtualization platform, 6-year head start on the new guys and the broadest support across applications, storage infrastructure types, and use cases.

I'm sorry we weren't effective in explaining the problem, Nate. Let me try again, using an analogy.

When you take a picture with your smartphone you create an image, let’s say 1 megabyte (MB) in size. Apple, Google, Dropbox or some other default tool will eventually replicate that image onto a laptop or desktop machine automatically, doubling the amount of storage being occupied by your original 1 MB photo to 2MB. That same system might send it to a tablet or iPad, which is another MB. Use your phone to send that photo to Instagram, and you’ve added another MB. Share the Instagram with Facebook and Twitter, and suddenly your 1 MB photo now occupies 6MB of storage across various devices and cloud-based systems.

The same thing happens in your business, with “production” systems creating “production data,” and separate systems designed for backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, test data management, compliance, and analytics all creating copies of that original - “copy data” - for various uses. In the enterprise, though, these aren’t copies of 1MB photos. They could be copies of 10 Terabyte Oracle databases, which consume massive amounts of time and resources, and massively complex systems and operational processes to maintain.

IDC estimates that - around the world - copy data is a $50 billion problem. And while there are multiple technologies out there to treat the “symptoms,” there’s really only one that cures the “disease” across the full range of enterprise applications, the full lifecycle of application data, all forms of enterprise storage from the data center to the cloud, and all major use cases specific to the enterprise. That solution is Actifio.

"Forgetting about Actifio" ??

Please don't :)

All sounds vaguely familiar... Look forward to see what's behind all the buzz. Things tend to get messy out here in the world, let's see what happens when their plan comes in contact with the external reality.

Real Copy Data Virtualization

Have to call foul on the characterization of Actifio as some kind of backup appliance. Please, guys. The vast majority of our customers today leverage the platform in a use case beyond business resiliency, typically business agility (i.e. Dev/Test) or cloud mobility (i.e., making application data more readily accessible to cloud-based compute resources.)

Actifio is the only true infrastructure- and use case-agnostic platform for copy data virtualization. We created the category... and while there are certainly other vendors out there with point solutions that take a similar approach (Delphix for Dev/Test, CommVault for Backup...) nobody does what we do.

Let's keep it real here. Thanks.

EMC: Backup is broken, do you hear me? Now buy this other thing

Actifio Is Radically Simple Copy Data Management... TODAY.

"Chief Marketing Mouthpiece?" Ouch.

Setting that aside... you nailed it. All I'd add for your readers is that it's important to remember that the big storage vendors created the Copy Data growth problem, and benefit the most from it. It's naive to think they're the ones who are going to solve the problem. Mr. Manley is dead right about where the market is going, but until EMC tells financial analysts that it's no longer going to get the revenue tailwind of massive same customer data growth, this copy cat strategy is more about protecting EMC market share than it is about protecting customer data.

I'd all so point out that they're calling for a data management model that tames storage growth, sets SLA's for production applications, leverages backups as assets instead of insurance, and manages data in its native format to make it accessible instantly. For all the breadth of their current product line... they have NONE of those capabilities today, and Actifio has ALL of them.

Actifio plans wider data management portfolio

Re: that's quite a bit of hype there batman

I'm not sure who you spoke to, Nate, but I wonder if he was drinking from an EMC coffee cup at the time.

Storage upstart polishes copied-data slurping tool

Re: who uses it?

Mike Troiano here, I'm Actifio's CMO.

The short answer to your question is enterprises with 15TB-2PB of production data who find their storage requirements are growing too quickly; they're unable to ingest data fast enough to meet their internal SLA's; or the RTO or RPO objectives they can support using conventional technology just don't get the job done.

Most businesses today are dealing with a storage explosion. When you look closely at the data growth, you find production data growing at a linear rate, and "COPY DATA" - meaning data produced by all the systems that make copies of production (backup, snapshot, DR, BC, test & dev, analytics...) - growing geometrically. Copy data is what drives the storage explosion, because each of the systems that create it operate in a silo, creating copies without knowing what copies already exist. And while it's true there are plenty of systems out there to treat the symptoms of unchecked copy data growth (dedup, WAN optimization, etc.), Actifio is the first that cures the disease.

We do that by virtualizing some or all of the data protection apps I mentioned above. We replace those systems with a single one that makes a single, golden copy of whatever you'd like to protect in production, then stores incremental changes to it in such a way that you can recover anything instantly for up to 90% less than it would cost to do so through conventional means.

I hope that helps your brain stop hurting. If you'd like to know more, just ping me on Twitter @miketrap.
