Surrey teen charged over Mumsnet hack attack

The Nazz

I-spy an omission . . .

should it have been ..."against the high profile UK mis-parenting site"?

YMMV

Safety, pah! Digital Dukes of Hazzard have robot cars powersliding

The Nazz

I'm not impressed, at all.

Not a particularly difficult track to learn is it?

I reckon my dog could drive the kid's battery powered car around that track given 20 minutes learning time. And sufficient treats.

US Telecom beats up FCC over investment

The Nazz

Holland speaking double dutch?

If Holland, as a mouthpiece, is so in favour of investment in real, actual facilties, then why such severe opposition to any municipality that wishes to make real investment in real infrastructures?

G4S call centre staff made 'test' 999 calls to hit performance targets

The Nazz

It's only going to get worse.

If only a fraction of what the sister-in-law, a teacher, tells me then most of the current state education system is engaged in gaming the system (for higher self reward) and producing a whole load of future operatives for such underhand tactics.

Wouldn't it be better if the NCA or similar employed this Love guy in a job, a top job?

SpaceX adds Mars haulage to its price list

The Nazz

What a bargain! "For just US$62.0 SpaceX will send 4,850kg to Mars"

Okay, i've booked the Ex on the first flight, no guarantee required other than it at least tries to take off.

Bonus too, 4,740 kgs spare capacity, free to a good home.

Are state-sponsored attackers poisoning the statistical well?

The Nazz

Didn't the UoEA prove this very point?

Maybe they patented their process.

Maybe not.

Such and similar financial practices, let's say misuse of public monies, have been endemic in UK public bodies for years.

Music's value gap? Follow the money trail back to Google

The Nazz

The value gap indeed

For sale in our local charity shop : CD's 49p each.

so i has a rummage, selects one i actually want and a couple i'll give a listen to.

Just about to sort out the princely sum of £1.47 when the lady asks for 99p.

Yeah, that's correct, it's 49p or three for 99p. What value indeed.

And the best parts of this?

When that CD was made and sold, the musicians, songwriters, producers etc were ALL paid by the record company, or more correctly were supposed to have been paid.

And NO f*cking licence. No sign of one, at all. I just put it in the hi-fi, car, optical disc tray whatever and it just works*.

And when two of em go back for resale to someone else then the various artistes were still paid.

*Mind you, these days they tend to need de-amplifying by upto 50% to be bearable.

Perhaps the makers of "Prestige" wellies (what a dreadful analogy) should pay more attention to THEIR quality and asking prices.

Streaming now outsells downloads – Recording Industry Ass. of America

The Nazz

I wish they'd make their friggin' minds up.

Either the punters have PURCHASED/BOUGHT a download or they've leased it. Choose one only. Typical greedy twunts, "purchased" when they want our cash as revenue, but only "leased" when they want it back or prevent you passing it on to your widow/estate etc.

And in which segment of revenue is that paid by broadcast radio, eg the UK's BBC Radio 1 which i believe pays the best part of £100 ($140 or so) every time it plays a song. Some of those songs must be owned by the "US record labels".

Spotify to cough up royalties, just toss your copyright claims over there ... in the bin

The Nazz

I'm a tad confused

as to who Spotify are going to pay. The article makes mention of all of Songwriters, publishers and artists.

Spotify paying artists directly would be a good thing of itself but i reckon the majority of payments won't be made directly to them.

Came across an interesting article ( a bit dated mind and admittedly predigital, pre Spotify) the other day re Bill Nelson of 70's group Be Bop Deluxe and his receipt of ZERO royalties from that work. Interesting how the "Music Co", involved either refused or couldn't (as if) provide any accurate data on what was received in and what was due out. Perhaps they'd no money left after splurging it all out of Robbie Williams.

Speaking of which, if i did play Robbie Williams's "South of the Border" please tell me that Spotify WILL be paying out royalties to Shel Silversteins* estate :

Why should you care about Google's AI winning a board game?

The Nazz

Maybe it's not all it's cracked up to be?

Upon the machine suffering it's first defeat, or more correctly, Mr Lee Sedol winning a game the BBC news report included the following :

"Google representatives said the defeat was "very valuable" for AlphaGo, as it identified a problem which they could now try to fix."

That sounds to me much more like human programming than genuine machine learning otherwise why would the google guys need to be involved in a fix,ie upgrade.?

Also, whilst there may be a huge number of possible moves , to the power of 170, does it really matter that much where the second , or third, stone is placed? Does this, realistically, not reduce the "potential" moves by a massive amount?

Re: The "right" to listen to music

Would you please stop with this nonsense.

The music industry sold me physical property, Vinyl LP's and CD's on which i paid the appropriate "artiste" and associated parasite "taxes". Outright purchase. No mention of a licence.

The Nazz

Re: the right to listen to music

Can you please stop with this nonsense? The right to listen to indeed.

I only buy physical things, Vinyl LP's and CD's. Having purchased the product i use it as i see fit.

I paid the "artist" and associated "parasite" tax at the time of outright purchase.

Anyway, wasn't the original intent of copyright to remunerate creatives "whilst they create more work"?

Not as a parasite foodstuff many years after their creative output ceases (including death).

Apple backs down from barring widow her dead husband's passwords

The Nazz

"Renting" music ffs

If one only "rents" music for the duration of one's life, then isn't it about time that copyright only exists for the lifetime of the artist? Last to expire if it's a group thing.

(yes, yes i know, groups rarely own the copyright).

Music publisher BMG vs US cable giant Cox: Here's why it matters

The Nazz

Re: Spoilation

From the linked articles it would appear that :

Rightscorp are the ones who deliberately destroyed important evidence. Not Cox.

ALL versions of their tracking software before July 2015.

One has to ask, in an ongoing case, why they did so and WHAT HAVE THEY GOT TO HIDE?

Not that Judge O'Greedy seems to care so much.

The Nazz

Business as usual then.

From the article on Rightscorps losses it appears that the vast majority of their revenue ends up with the Music Rights holders and lawyers anyway.
