Intel boosts low-end PCs, laptops with Atom-powered 'Braswell' SoCs

Dan Paul

Product looking for a market

Considering that the actual cost of better chips to longtime laptop manufacturers is pretty low, why would you risk your reputation using crap like this?

Intel i3 and i5's meet the power versus performance argument enough. Using this Celeron stuff has to be for the really low end of the market, like landfill electronics, obsolete before they are a year old.

Do you remember the hardware specs required to run Vista? Woefully underspecified and woeful performance. That meant there were a lot of crap laptop hardware that could never run anything better than XP being used to run Vista.

This will be the same.

US still hoarding zero-day app vulnerabilities, say EFF campaigners

Dan Paul

Re: zero days, AETs, malware callbacks

And you cant quite sure of whose side THEY are on, either.

In fact, there are NO manufacturers of anti-virus or other security software that are blameless.

If you can't get positive indication of ALL vulnerabilities; is that the Security vendor letting the fox have the keys to the henhouse? Or are they just incompetent?

Nuclear waste spill: How a pro-organic push sparked $240m blunder

Dan Paul

Something entirely different

Now you get into something that increases the mechanical or electrical shock sensitivity by adding metal powders to an oxidizer.

The comment about nitrobezene would also make it more hazardous. No need to do that. ANFO moves mountains all by itself.

Ammonium Nitrate is a strong oxidizer and the carbon in fuel oil is a great fuel. Add some 8th grade chemistry equations and you can figure out how that or other chemical work with Ammonium Nitrate.

Dan Paul

It's the same thing (Diesel vs Fuel Oil)

There are only different grades that are either lighter or darker colored oil. Also same as kerosene or JP4.

If mixed in the right proportions ANFO (ammonium nitrate and fuel oil) requires another explosive like a blasting cap to set it off. They mine with it all the time, its VERY stable.

You could try to light it with a match and it will just burn like C4. Ask Lewis, he will back that up.

Dan Paul

Re: Why not organic kitty litter?

You don't want to use organic kitty litter if the only use for it on site is as a collection agent for spills in a chemical lab.

Regular clay based cat litter is somewhat basic and would tend to neutralize and absorb weak acids and other chemicals or spills.

Organic litter would react with the chemicals and likely offgas. Or decompose and and offgas.

One would hope that animal testing labs would not use organic litter if they were doing anything radioactive. The animal excrement would be fairly radioactive as it tends to concentrate the testing substances.

Re: Too soon @Directive 10-289

I too tire of the Apologists and the Nannies here who blame present day people for the ills of their ancestors. We need to stop living in the past and move on. People need to stop playing the role of the poor "Victim" and take responsibility for their own actions in the present.

The Slavery industry was created by Europeans and brought here to the US and the Caribean Islands by their ships. Once the system was in place, there was no reasonable way to walk away from it without throwing away the benefit of cheap cotton and tobacco. The fact that Europe helped bankroll the Confederacy during the civil war is all the proof needed to put the blame back where it belongs.

Anti-gay Indiana starts backtracking on hated law after tech pressure

Dan Paul

Religious Discrimination

I feel quite comfortable stating that the majority of El Reg commenters are anti-religious and atheist. And you are welcome to your opinion. However, there are many here that take that to an extreme and that is strictly discriminatory.

What have we done to you by simply having Christian beliefs and espousing them? Is that ANY different than you doing the same? Where is the moderation when it is clear that there are extremely derogatory and intolerant statements being made against Christians?

It wasn't a Christian that dragged out the Old Testament on these forums and started quoting ancient beliefs that are no longer mainstream, it was an intolerant atheist.

If we have done nothing to you except express our beliefs in certain circumstances; why do you feel you have the the right to criticize and demean our beliefs?

We have not demeaned you because you are gay or atheist. We have said nothing to that effect.

However, both the commenters and the author of this clickbait article have taken every opportunity to present a one sided argument that we are evil just because we are Christians.

As such, I say you are intolerant bigots because you are anti-religious.

Over 19 other states and the federal government have almost identical "Freedom of Religion" laws and there are no outcrys against them, only Indiana.

Obama himself was instrumental in proffering an almost identical "Freedom of Religion" law in Illinois. Where is the outrage against his hypocrisy? Nowhere, because it is inconvenient to the truth that Kieran wishes to tell.

Does Kieran Mcarthy feel she and El Reg don't have to provide all the truth but only their bigoted anti-religious opinion? Sadly, it would seem so.

Again the left wing speaks before they bother to learn all the facts or include them in their articles. This is the same idiocy that happened in these comments about Ferguson Missouri after it became clear that Darren Wilson was justified in shooting Brown and cleared by the state grand jury and the Federal Grand Jury investigation.

It is not considered "good reporting" to slant your article towards one side or the other. The word "Tabloid" comes to mind. Perpetuating these lies is even worse behavior.

Re: "Don't tread on me" applies to ME, not you. @Thomas K.

Are you really that ignorant to say that?

Do you even know how many small towns and farms were basically stolen by the TVA to put up those dams? That they literally trampled on the rights of the property owners?

Considering you folks haven't got a clue when it comes to Americian politics, geography, States rights, the Constitution or anything else topical; so as much as you can't restrain yourself you might try learning what actually happened before you make lame statements like that.

BTW, these "same States" are the last to want the federal government to be involved (especially the southern ones) in ANYTHING. Ever hear of "revenuers"?

Dependent on candle light and happy to still own their family property, free from State or Federal interference would be more like it for those Tennesseeans that got ripped off by their own state goverment.

To add insult to injury you quote unsubstantiated opinion and conjecture from wikipedia as your source. Wikipedia is a very unreliable source in many cases, especially that one.

Re: I'm skeptical that this bill will pass, but...

You have never even heard what Cruz had to say because you are too busy criticizing him. As I have heard and said many times You're not listening if your mouth is moving.

The excellent speech he gave at Liberty College announcing his candidacy was done without any teleprompter. Cruz was in the top of his class at Harvard and many have said he is an excellent debater. Though there are speechwriters at all levels of politics, this wasn't your typical situation.

In comparison, YOUR president has never made a public speech without a teleprompter and he sounds like a space cadet when he doesn't use one.

You liberals have proposed little to nothing of value in eight years while bankrupting this country by printing money and buying votes and blocked the legislation of any conservatives. Now shutup and let someone else have a turn. They couldn't be any worse than what we have now.

Re: Shameful (Shoe is on the other foot?)

What is shameful is that Europeans can't understand the same issue applies when you want to regulate US companies. I agree that the US Legal system should have no direct authority beyond US borders but that assumes that European courts have no jurisdiction of US companies. Like deserves kind.

However, US courts DO have complete control over Mastercard and Visa, Paypal, EBay etc. Cutting off their air supply is one way to gain compliance with the judges ruling.

Standard General bids to save RadioShack from oblivion

Dan Paul

Re: Next (No retailers left!)

Because there is something very satisfying about having it in your hand now when you need it instead of it being backordered. Never had any kids, did you? That special cable they needed isn't available in time for Christmas? Too bad, it used to be at the Shack but no more.

The next "online" thing will be food. Just wait until the local food store goes tit's up when you need milk or formula or diapers. This is why you split purchases between bricks and mortar and online.

Price is not the only consideration.

Dan Paul

Re: Radio Shack was useful at one time (And still is)

SO, But still there and in the store. Look, whether you like it or not all the whining about not carrying Arduino at the Shack is not true. YOU go buy it from the "lowest" price vendor online, YOU can be the guinea pig for that stall in Shenzen that takes 10 weeks to ship the knockoff parts. All the while your credit card info is traded 6 ways to Sunday. Lowest available price is not the only factor when you NEED something after 5PM on a weekend.

Dan Paul

Re: Next (No retailers left!)

Perhaps if some of you had spent some money there instead of blowing it all online they might still be around. There is some use to a bricks and mortar storefront. Don't whine now, its too late.

Just wait, FOOD is next.

Dan Paul

Dan Paul

Re: Radio Shack was useful at one time (And still is)

You obviously have not been in their stores in several years as you would have noticed that they are indeed selling Arduino & PI and lots of other related electronic doodads. And they have been available for at least two years.

You only have to look here:

Hey, Woz. You've got $150m. You're kicking back in Australia. What's on your mind? Killer AI

Dan Paul

No AI for computers ever

The premise of Artificial Intelligence has been done in almost every way imaginable through Science Fiction literature. In most cases, nothing good has ever come of it. Even stories that have a more positive outlook usually come with strong caveats against it. Science Fiction has been well known for predicting future trends for some time now. Submarines and space travel come to mind.

When Steve Wozniak, Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking all say the same thing, we should listen to their every word on the subject. These are some of societies most intelligent outliers, geniuses that are almost able to forsee the future. They may not be infallible but their opinions on these subjects should beat the odds most anywhere.

I believe that they should take the pixellation off these videos so they completely shame the idiots who did the disgusting deeds in public. If you get caught doing something bad by the camera, be prepared to be on TV. Screw "empathy" as there can be no excuse for that behavior, ever.

Stop apologising for these fools. They lost all right to any "pity" long ago.

Re: Criminal acts...

No, she can't because she commited a crime by peeing on the floor in a public area (disorderly conduct and/or lewd and lascivious behavior) and providing oral sex (public nudity/lewd and lascivious behavior) and she continued to commit the crime knowing full well she did it in plain sight of the cameras as they tried to block them (Willful Intent). Both are guilty of the second and third crimes.

The cameras were placed legally as they are not in any place where one would ever expect privacy like a lavatory or locker room. An elevator in a public building is a public place.

Otherwise, a certain US football player would have been able to squash the video of him knocking out his fiancee at a Casino.

Kaspersky Lab hits back at Bloomberg's Russian spy link hit piece

Dan Paul

Re: "You can trust US", says Uncle Sam - yeah, right!

The US does not have a state sponsored criminal hacker element like Russia & China does. It does not have the blatant graft and corruption that Russia & China does. The US has laws that most people obey. It's almost a game in Russia and China to see how you can beat the laws.

No one likes their communications being monitored but the US is only looking deeply at "bad actors", everything else they look at is at a 50,000 ft meta data level. Agreed, if you use any full cradle to grave encryption method or search for things like making explosives or jihad they will be much more interested in you. If you can't live with that fact, better buy some pencils and paper.

All the more reason for Kaspersky Labs and ANY other anti-virus software manufacturer or their employees to be suspect as there are many "features" built in to anti-virus programs that could potentially be used to steal users banking or other personal info.

Anyone with an innate knowledge of such programs and a criminal motive could be very dangerous indeed. A lack of funds is often all the motive needed.

As long as we are making wild suppositions, whose to say that those same people did not write the hacking exploits that are available for sale, especially as many anti-virus programs don't find these exploits?

Re: Google dominance

The only "dominance" that Google can be accused of is making a MUCH better product than anyone else in the world. The rest of these accusations just fall in to line with what a well run business does to be succesful. "Diversity" of search engines isn't Googles problem when nobody else even tries to compete.

Why do you Euros (and some idiots in Washington) think thats abusive? Looks like you want everyone to be deliberately subpar; nobody can be a winner just so no ones feelings get hurt. Reminds me of Teeball "Oh we don't keep score". Any good business does.

Great companies win. Get used to it or make a better product than they do.

Battle for control of Earth's unconnected souls moves to SPAAAACE

Dan Paul

Thats the point of internet access in Africa or other regions

Commerce needs web access in order to flourish in those regions. The lack of that access is an impediment to those small businesses advertising, communicating, using micropayments, banking, determining prices, etc. This same web access could help dispel rumors about vaccinations and other health issues and educate the populace.

Internet access also provides the user with the ability to find new markets. Getting peoples products directly to market while eliminating the "middleman" will go a long way towards providing an income for them, thus helping to bring them out of poverty, famine and disease.

FLAT TAX! No more loopholes.

The world needs a flat 15% income tax on all companies or persons that are based in that country.

The tax laws need to be changed everywhere to remove 100% of the loopholes. In fact, throw them all out and start with all new legislation guaranteed to be understood by even the most ignorant among us. It only needs to be one sentence long.

As it stands now, almost all corporations pay an insignificant amount of taxes because of loopholes and accountants. Once corporations pay their fair share, the individual tax rate could be decreased.

The upshot being that a huge increase in disposable income would be able to spur economic growth.

However, both political parties have been guilty of the same behaviour.

Depending on the severity of her offense, she could be guilty of a felony and THAT would make her inelegible to vote or hold any political office. If it can be proved that she obfuscated messages of a sensitive nature by using this or even another account, she could be sent to jail.
