HTML 5 is a half baked techology right now. The spec is not completed never mind implemented. Flash does have some problems. But it is still very useful. Especially to advertisers. And for us it is very useful for streaming video. And it is cross platform.

Flash won't be dead for maybe another 5 years.

Open means whatever Jobs wants it to mean.

Also Flash will be on Android, MeeGo, Windows Phone and other platforms.

I cannot understand why Dell would not use Windows 7 Pro. As a previous poster send WIndows XP is very important to the corporate market and will remain so for another few years. 7 Pro and Ultimate includes Virtual PC meaning any XP program will work without any problem, alhough not XP drivers, ultities and AV software.

I have to say though that in this market the Panasonic Toughbooks are the benchmark for fully rugged laptops. And for semi-rugged laptops I would very strongly recommend the new HP Elitebooks.

Motorola have a handset business which is a lost cause. It has no future. I blame Ed Zander. Anyone says that Nokia are struggling. But compared to Moto they are the best run business in the World. Shame I did like the Startac, Timeport and RAZR.

I would have liked to have seen Nokia buy Palm for WebOS. Symbian does not have a future in high end phones, tablets, netbooks etc. Meego is going to competing against iPhone OS 4, WP7, Android 3. A more mature WebOS with the best possible Nokia hardware engineering would have been something.

The best retailer on the high street is obviously John Lewis. No other retailer even comes close.

Online I would say Amazon. They have great prices. You can return something within 30 days for any reason or no reason at all. Also they have a little known thing where if you buy something from Amazon and the price goes down in the next 30 days they refund the difference - no questions asked. You have to phone them, but this is useful with electronics.

Other decent online retailers include play.com, hughes direct and of course Misco for any proper computer kit.

Obviously avoid the Dixons Group at all costs. Lets hope they go out of business soon. Lets make it happen.

Reality of DVD

I own a Toshiba E1 HD-DVD player and a PS3. So I guess this is a subject where I know something. The reality is this. I use the Tosh to upscale DVDs to my TV but I don't care about either format. I couldn't even been bothered to redeem a coupon to claim five HD-DVDs. BR is even worse with much more DRM, crappy half baked java code. DVD succeeded because it was a unified format and a big improvement on VHS. To be honest anyone who really cares is a sucker. DVD is fine for the next five years. Then it will be 1080p BT Vision IPTV, or 1080p Freeview or Sky. And a PVR/DVR is a better solution for recording than messing around with disks. Actually the Philips BT Vision DVR is excellent. The Microsoft Mediaroom software is superb, it wipes the floor with the Bangalore crappy software, made in Guangdong hardware that is Sky+ sourced by Hackney barrowboys based in Brentwood (Amstrad). The Philips box is even made in the EU, in Hungary. Check it out at John Lewis or Comet. Seriously.
