Virgin Media trashes patent infringement accusations

loose the antiquated VM liberate middleware and end users win

in one way this court case could finally make Vm replace the antiquated liberate middleware and its related backend and that would be for the good of every end user if they didnt buy in something even slower and STB CPU stealing, that thing needs all the help it can get even on the V= boxs neevr mind the older SD STBS.

however this case is also about software patents and as already mentioned not a valid case in this country, unless they have other options we have not been told about ?

so we are unlikely to see the liberate replaced, and thats the biggest shame for us end users.

take your vote, replace the current liberate GUI or let the US gamestar force a payment or two, on gets you money spent on your stb for the better, the other payed out your cash to these jokers.

remember though the VM executive board are US based and the money you pay finds its way into these US directors pockets eather way....

a very nice cash cow eather way for the US directors for all intents and purposes.

BTW, you cant now rearrange or hide the VM channels since the VM stb updates anymore, if you use the leaft/right buttons on the handset

eather way all versions of the NTL:tw:VM liberate gui are plain crud however you look at it.

one final thought, this liberate middleware GUI works by using a very old and limited subset of html code, so is it really a cripped web browser and so not covered by these patents?, question questions, we need aswers it seems and a good base for our future long term VM GUIs.

rebol/view gets my vote as its fast fully TCP:ip based and scriptable, just what the doctor ordered...,take a look, you might like it,a and best of all its multi OS ready ... today.

is it good for advanced cameras?

these are tubes right? so can you get or make a photo cell that fits the end.

if so wouldnt these things make the best possible digital cameras and yet be super light for deployment in something like an interstella array?

im assuming if it works, its going to be better than the current super expensive mirrors up there now...

dealer want to be heard, what about the users...

of course theres also this related story today, as usual nothing for the end users though other than paying through the nose.

http://www.mobilenewscwp.co.uk/News/7708/dealers_pack_out_ofcom_meeting.html

"...

“It’s the first time dealers have had the opportunity to talk directly to Ofcom and everyone has jumped at it.”

Caudle added that he would develop an agenda for dealers’ input to the meeting via the IMPDA and Phone Dealer Forums. Along with cashback and misselling, dealers would focus on network relationships and the future of the mobile industry in general.

“We want to get more give from the networks,” he said. “For example, O2 won’t let authorised O2 dealers have the iPhone until January. It’s crazy. We’re hoping Ofcom’s influence on the networks will help us.”

EU tunes in to DVB-H

DVB is good but .....

while its been clear for a while now that DVB is good as is AVC/H264(Mpeg4-part10) WHY are they saying use DVB-H when its far more effective DVB-H2 brother, the latest DVB standard is already defined and matched to the currently used and expanding DVB-S2 standard/markets.

theres also lots of progress from the DVB-T2 and even the DVB-C2 standard is being worked on, even if the ludite UK cable provider Virgin Media (or is it its US based boardroom boys) is still refusing to see the righting on the wall of the EU/world and provide a AVC/DVB-C let alone the newest DVB-C2 capable end user device.

put it simply, the newest DVB-whatever '2' standard is far better at far more in the same alloted space and is available right now so use and standardise on that '2' rather than its older sibling for a far better /advanced long term expansion.and growth.

just give me the power down the local shops

"Global Warming is a myth or it won't have the effects claimed and we endeavour to reduce our energy consumption and seek alternatives to fossil fuels etc."

the simple fat is the majority dont give a stuff about global warming/cooling/convayor belt etc.

windpower http://www.gotwind.org/visitor_1.htm

and solar in a simple place on your property and plug in to your computer kit and a nice cheap price and everyone will start to use it, i know i would as im after saving masses of cash i put in my electric meter every week, just make the damb things and put them in your local hardware street shop, B&Q and everywere else.

a bug standrd 12v 5-50W self contained and rain water fed fual cell should start most people off if its as cheap as buying sa wireless router.

hell start matching them up with all your low power wireless kit and we might start getting somewere in the UK.

"mike:As for multicast, be careful what you wish for.

About the time folks really started using multicast, the NIC vendors were dropping the (Layer2) multicast hash filters from new designs, in favor of a single "Show me every multicast frame" bit.

So better hope your CPU and OS can handle having a high-bandwidth connection in (effectively) promiscuous mode any time you enabled multicast.

(not to mention that many popular core routers fall over pretty badly with "much" mcast traffic)

that being the case, perhaps its a slight problem then , but given that IPv6 (a layer above your point)is mandated to have Multicast and more to the point its a vital function of operation, there most be a way around any such problems as regards current core routers ?.

until we get multicast switched on all the way, we can never hope to progress past tunneling it over/through the core tear1 and thats a crying shame, the ISP's use it internally inside their networks so their users should also be given the benefits.

its not like the venders cant issue a firmware update to fix any cockup's they have made in costing their top of the line premium cost kit, perhaps the if things are as back as that then the tear1 customers need to take a stand and demand updates etc.

how would ou fix this potential problem you point out mike?, (or any other interested reader?.)

if unicast P2P is such as problem for ISPs the world over then why do they insist on always turning off the the generic multicasting capability found in all industrial strenth kit.

if they just turned it on all the way to the end users and told them, the bedroom coders would thenget to work and solve your unicasting P2P problem for you, and everyones a winner as users got their content and save vast amounts of bandwidth all round.

just turn it on, its powered an available right now.

Mpeg4 is a generic term...

i really wish when salesmen and tech sites/reviewers say things like "It can also turn its hand to WMV and MPEG 1, 2 and 4 formats." they made it perfectly clear that Mpeg4 is a generic term that infact covers far more than mear divX/Xvid video.

the truth is, it seems intentional to keep using this Mpeg4 general term so as to cover up the fact that AVC En/Decoding is not included in these new devices.

to be clear (as i hope theReg will be from now on) for video, Mpeg4 covers both the OLD Mpeg4-*ASP* (aka divx/Xvid *Part 2*)

and the far newer and better Mpeg4-*AVC* (aka H.264 _Part 10_)

heres a link to make it clearer as to why AVC is better, its got a lossless mode that ASP does not.

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=920514

just add the old ASP or the new AVC to your text then at least people might start asking the right questions when they come to buy these bits of kit and perhaps even force the salesmen and HW/SW developers to finally put a simple and cheap FPGA thats able to decode AVC content.

and, have the ability to easy re-program it if a new codec is required for the end users use later.

KiloCORE FPGA's seem like a good and cheap investment for the devs and users alike for the future...
