Just the small matter of the bill for scrapping Blighty's old nuclear submarines: It's £7.5bn

EmilPer.

why not strip the weapons and upgrade them

.. to a research/cable laying or monitoring/prospecting role ?

I have no clue about nuclear submarines, just asking.

IBM so very, very sorry after jobs page casually asks hopefuls: Are you white, black... or yellow?

what if you're multiracial ?

What if you're multiracial ? I'm so mixed-race I qualify to become the evil lord from all the racist conspiracy theories and if there were a "affirmative action" policy in my country I'd have been nominated be the lord of the universe.

What about us, no "mixed blood degenerates" category at IBM ?

I was tolerant of adds until now, you managed to persuade me to install add blockers.

hybrid seed is old

Hybrid seeds were used for about 100 years, a long time before DNA was even discovered

As per Mendel, if you plant seeds grown from hybrid seeds you'll get a proportion of each of the breeds used to make the hybrids, and some will even breed true, that is you'll get the original hybrid.

Yes, they won't have the original productivity, but then the inbred plants used to make the hybrid had a worse productivity than the hybrid anyway.

We're no longer using pure breeds because they are not as productive as a few of the hybrids they are used to produce, and even Monsanto/BASF/etc. propagate the pure breeds, else they won't be able to provide hybrid seed.

Re: If we taxed the rich properly

very amusing, but the majority of the taxes retrieved by any government do not come from income tax but from import taxes, VAT and excise taxes, which everybody pays

The march of Amazon Business has resellers quaking in their booties

EmilPer.

"once Amazon has destroyed their competitors the prices will surely rise"

"once Amazon has destroyed their competitors the prices will surely rise"

... is strange how a lot of companies and individuals sell through Amazon to a market a lot larger than they had access to when they ran a brick and mortar store. In the same time the local resellers have the same stocks, products get in stock or out of stock simultaneously, and sell at almost the same prices too, which makes me think they buy from a single distributor.

Most of my Amazon purchases were from private shops and shipped on their own infrastructure, Amazon being only the point of access.

Yes, pretty sure Amazon gets info about what is in demand and what is not and what people regard as a good product. The traditional networks could have done the same but they bothered more with exclusivity contracts and gouging on prices now, not in a hypothetical future.

The scandal about Amazon taxes is about the taxes paid by the smaller shops, the governments in Europe would very much like to have Amazon deliver their "fair cut" directly regardless of what the small shop actually spends while supplying those products.

Trump's axing of cyber czar role has left gaping holes in US defence

EmilPer.

was the old Czar any good ?

Assuming the chatter about foreign IT interference in the elections helped Trump, then having an incompetent security guy in the cabinet is not worth his paycheck. Or her paycheck.

Re: A gun is involved in every single mass shooting.

"but why that happens only in USofA ? maybe there is a problem..."

USofA still has a free press, you hear about it as soon as it happens.

Shootings and gunfights in the streets and murders etc. happen in other more respectable countries, but to find about them you have to scour archive.org, or to wait 10 years until they get mentioned in connection with something else, such as neonazis serially executing immigrants and such, or very public fire fights between biker gangs.

That's a theory

when economists write about productivity they mean income per employee, not number of widgets produced by an employee, that was the way Soviet Union and the sattelite states looked at "productivity".

Official: Perl the most hated programming language, say devs

Re: Sad really...

actually Perl is only like 2 years older than Python, only people started getting woozy about Python 5 or 6 years ago when the Ruby hype cooled down
