Good read.
Nice article (and no sarcasm intended). Informative with a splash of Reg humour.

I largely agree with this article, but I think Employers needs to recalibrate their expectations. The salaries for software engineers are usually in the 20-30K band, similar to that of police men, taxi drivers, nurses etc.
A good example is the job adverts on this site, C++ programmer, 28k salary. And that is not for a grad, that will be someone with 3+ years experience on top of a 4 year degree.
I would argue the professionalism, skills and depth of knowledge required to be good software engineer are comparable to that of a surgeon or architect and the salaries should reflect that.
Oh and good luck getting a software engineering job once you reach 40.
Light left this supernove 10 billion years ago and the universe is aproximatly 15 billion years old, so when this supernova exploded the universe was only 5 billion years old. A universe of 5 billion years has a maximum size of 10 billion light years, as the universe expanded at the speed of light. So how did it take 10 billion years for this light to reach us?
This article fails to point out that Windows 8 can be purchased for as little as £29 whereas Windows 7 was significantly more. The revenues generated for MS on Windows 8 sales are likely to be considerably down on Windows 7 sales. Microsoft will no doubt be hoping to claw back this revenue from the commissions gained from its app store and in-line advertising. I can see MS blocking (or making it very difficult) to install third party applications not purchased through the app store.
IMO this release of Windows is a very self-serving, syndical, anti competitive move by Microsoft. They are looking to lock in users and lock out competitors. But hey, at least the performance monitor looks good!
"HP announced last week it would take an $8.8bn writedown on the 2011 $11bn cash purchase it made for Autonomy..."
This is like buying a £200,000 house and finding out its only worth £40,000. This must be some sort of scam to avoid paying profits out to shareholders. Or the entire HP senior management board are completely incompetent.
