Why a merged Apple OS is one mash-up too far

Sean Jennings

2+2=8

The author's maths are amiss.

The original Bloomberg article refers to Apple using its own A series chips for running macOS.

Nothing about Apple merging its operating systems, though they do certainly currently use a common kernel at the moment, namely UNIX BSD.

Apple have stated previously they don't believe in one OS fits all approach, hence there is tvOS, watchOS, iOS, and macOS. I would be surprised if they were to change strategy simply because they ditch Intel microporcessors for their Macs.

related?

could it be at all related to IBM's launch tomorrow of the new Eclipse-based Lotus Notes/Domino 8... it already runs on various Unix kit, maybe Solaris is added to the list?

"Hooray for WebSphere."?????

from what I recall from recent quarters and sales figures, that should read "Hooray for Lotus" instead, and this is likely to improve even further with the launch of Quickr, Connections, and Notes 8 this year

ever heard of ODF?

"Microsoft said the partnership reflects the efforts it has made to move away from a proprietary model. The latest releases of Office use the Open XML format, which is under the independent control of Ecma – an industry association dedicated to the standardisation of ICT systems."

This isn't a news article, its a press-release. Everyone knows that ISO, the only standards organisation worth taking notice-of, is not rushing to approve Miscrosoft proprietry XML format which documents and requires compliance with bugs in old versions of Office.

from Microsofts PR Dept?

"Of course, the alternative explanation is that more organised IT departments are better able move quickly and figure they might as well get the inevitable over with, but that seems like a far less plausible explanation."

Surely this is the OBVIOUS explanation!?!?!!!!! DOH!!!!

Beavis and Butthead in London jihad

unbelievable

Thankfully only to the incompetance of those involved, many people weren't killed on Friday in London or on Saturday in Glasgow. True the terrorists concerned may be inept but their intention was to kill as many people as possible.

The tube-bombers on July 21st were also pathetically inept, sadly for the 52 killed and hundreds injured the tube-bombers on July 7th weren't.

Intent not competance defines a terrorist.

While I expect conspiracy-theorists (ie the CIA & Mossad orchestracted 9/11, the Holocaust didn't happen, and other such rubbish) and ultra-leftists (still upset at the collapse communism) to take any opportunity to attack verbally Western democracy in blogs such as this, I find it unbelievable that a technology website carries such utter tosh as that produced by Thomas Greene. If Mr Greene wants to vent such political polemic in public might I suggest a career in politics rather than masquerading as a journalist?
