The move to other RAM is ongoing - look at the slew of storage class memories and PMEM coming. The reality is that as a first off-cpu memory where you have to balance latency, density, cost, bandwidth, power and reliability there is nothing superior yet. Not saying that won't change, but even the much trumpeted 3d x-point has not made a dent.
I just bought a 2020 Samsung SMART TV - forget model (£600 55" thing). The UI is dreadful. Gone are the days of just turning on the telly - instead you have to navigate rows of slow icons and avoid "Rakuten TV". I'd never had to give my telly my email address before, or reboot it.
I know all of these "apps" will stop being supported in a year or so, so really all I want is something to display my desktop box. Perhaps "Smart TV executives" may realise folk don't want this extra complexity in their lives. If I can avoid, then I'd pay more for a dumb one in future.
Having just replaced the fusion drive on my 2015 27 iMac - it's not exactly easy anyway. Why they can't figure a way of opening it without all that glue and spudgers is a mystery to me. This is a step too far for me - perhaps I'll go for a mini next time, or just wave a white flag and give up ....
I agree, it's mm2 of Silicon per versus performance, not there marketing fluff that is now "node bragging rights".
The real danger here is that the West appears to have lost leadership in process technology, and it's a hard thing to regain ..... It going to be grim when TSMC become a monopoly for CPU fab
I think the sour grapes are because of the way he has made his money. There is no doubt that Amazon provide a fine service. It would also appear that their workers are employed to local legal minimum standards.
However, this guys wealth has been made off the backs of his employees. Their fulfilment centres appear to be horrific places to work and are staffed by people with little other choice. Perhaps making their lives slightly more pleasant and only being worth 50 Billion would encourage people to see this generous gesture in a better light
I'm sure they'll make money on it. The volumes will be relatively low, but their margins are high when you look at the price they're charging for the base machine, and how much more they charge for upgrades.
On top of that they offer a much needed sop, to their "pro" customers
People with a lot of money may need those specs or may not. It could be that they just like their Apple devices and are prepared to pay for that. It's strange to me that nobody seems to bat an eyelid at someone who spends a lot on a car when a Dacia Duster or equivalent would also just get you there .... I spend more time on computers (PC's, Macs, Linux) than I do in the car ...

Agreed, but not enough people seem to care. I bought an OMRON blood pressure monitor - offering graphing functions. When I got it, it became clear the functions were only on their site. why would they not let me export a .csv ? I can guess. Returned it, but I feel people on this forum do not represent the wider population who many, happily have a voice activated "friend" in their homes ....

I thibk they mean "resists" not resistors - as in photo-resists used in lithography of chips ....
Samsung spend that R&D money on a bunch of industries 7 markets. They are world leader in many things. Mobiles are just the visible tip.
I've visited their Korean Semiconductor facilities many times and they are a truly impressive company. I wouldn't bet against them - even if it looks like they cocked this up.
Having repaired a few iPhones recently, I'm starting to think they're not that bad. Once you get the screen off, it's all nicely done, and relatively easy to replace stuff, and you're right the extending tapes are a good innovation and preferable to glue.
What I object to though is the design for obsolescence of ultra-books. Want to extend the life-time of a laptop ? - upgrade the DRAM or the SSD. - hard to do when soldered down. I'm not convinced that this is down to space limitations.
But surely this has been going on since the first high street shop started selling mobiles. It's the tech equivalent of buying a can of shoe spray after you've bought your new flip flops. I was offered a warranty on batteries at a well know catalogue shop recently..... folk need to take some responsibility for their behaviour and just avoid theses sellers.
While I must admit to enjoying the apparent "come-uppance" at Apple, I do regret this overall trend. I don't want to use Andoid. I don't want Google to know more about my life, but when my ageing iphone6 dies, I'll have to switch to Android. I sincerely hope Apple reverse their price gouging. As others have said, I'm well paid, but just will not pay their silly prices - even to avoid Android.
Can we stop all the Apple basing .... it's tedious.
All this willy waving about it not being powerful enough for your use case is just juvenile bollocks. Well done, you can find a higher spec machine for less money - you must be hung like a blue whale - happy now ?
If people knowingly want to spend more on a Mac - let them. Some folk waste money on flash cars or fancy meals ....
