Re: Will it run Wordperfect 8?

Tried the old WP-linux links as mentioned a coupla yeras ago.

Perhaps, due to your encouragement, I'll try them again - this time on Ubuntu 1710..

Thanx.

Re: Windows wne on Windows.

Just don't spill it on your laptop, as I did once (or twice) to an old Toshiba. Cost me $400 to have it repaired- I should just have bought a new laptop!

Will it run Wordperfect 8?

Wordperfect is all that remains to convince a friend to convert his old Vista system into a modern up-to-date Ubuntu system.

If I can get WP-8 to run under Ubuntu 1710, then it's a go!

BTW, It is not well known that the "golden disk" aboard Voyager actually started out in 1980 as a cylinder! (as did most record disks in the early 1900s)

But the Fitzgerald Contraction is now starting to have its way. -

There once was a fencer named Fisk,

Re: it's already doing nnn,nnn KM/sec !

Well perhaps back in 1980 it was a cylinder and not a golden disk originally.

As Voyager approaches the speed of light, something called the Fitzgerald contraction becomes effective.

There once was a fencer named Fisk,

Whose speed was incredibly brisk.

So fast was his action,

The Fitzgerald contraction,

Foreshortended his foil to a disk.

If the windmills are inefficient, well, just turn them around - facing backward! (or is it forward?)

Use a shitload of AA or possibly C batteries

I say power these things with simple AA batteries- thousands of them.

As each set of batteries go dead, you jettison (no pun intended) them, and the plane thus becomes lighter and more efficient!

Insecure passengers could bring thir own pile of batteries in their carry-on and receive a badly needed discount on this ripoff-charge.

If you wanna use rechargeable ones, pay people on the ground- kids or homeless people - a nickel for each AA turned in. They can combine it with their empty beer-can pickup.

And it will get these unhealthy city people out in the countryside! It's WIN-WIN!

Re: 400 Gb on 4000 Winchesters.

If you were thinking of the IBM 3330, they held about 100 MB each and weighed about 10 lb .

As I recall, unlike those fancy new SUVs where one kicks under the tailgate to open it, you had to actually MANUALLY open the disk drive cover when replacing the diskdrive.

So about 4000 of these big cakeboxes could probably replace one of these micro-SD.

Understandably, direct-access would be somewhat slow, depending on how motivated the computer operator was. From my experience, the female access mechanism was generally faster, unless her nail polish was drying.

On the other hand, the older 2311 and 2314 held 7MB and ~30 MB respectively, Sadly, they were permanently nailed into their ersatz washing machine. So unlike the 3330, there was no "low-speed" direct addressing, except on the same drive.

Executives, and in this case Doctors (remember XXXXXs), are the reason IT backs down and drops their pants and leaves the door ajar for hackers. I see it all the time here at work. Screaming executives demand their f’n new toy or phone gets 100% access on our network NOW before their big meeting (or just before you get fired), or even board members cry to IT directors, who then order guys like me to “open er up”. We have no real power in IT.

The Russians KGB types now type all documents on typewriters, and lock them up in real vaults. In security circles in the USSR, nothing is on a computer.

So when Putin screams in your face, you open the vault, not the network firewall or switch ACLs. Then you’re poisoned or shot.

Re: Don't blame bearded young hipsters for the UI

Well, I'm neither bearded, young or a hipster (though I did play bongos briefly about 55 years ago, whilst smoking strange tobaccos)

And I run Win-10 In.Preview 16170 (the Redstone-3) on this desktop as well as the "standard" Win-10 on a laptop.

As well as Android x86-64 on this machine - but only to run a couple of apps that are sadly available only on Android and iCrap.

However, posting this from Ubuntu Mate 16.10 just to kick its tyres. Ugh.

Think I'll switch this partition back to Gnome! Mate is for old ladies. Indeed I WOULD recommend it to some "older" person who was wondering what to replace their XP with. Highly recommended to you folks here!

But- I spend most of my time on this machine in Win-10. I DO NOT see what all the fuss is about with all you old fuddy-duddies. OK, The Win-10 UI is SLIGHTLY different from XP or Win-7. So? Learn to navigate.

You geezers obviously have difficulties with anything "new". Still running Netscape 4.7?

Wake me up when Linux replaces Windows on everyones' desktops/laptops. But be advised -I may not wake up- I don't have many years left.

And let me know when the dislike on this post hits 100. It's been so long!
